Just a bit of speculation that's floating around:

1. It's big, approximately 1.2GB.
2. Currently requires a USB jump drive to install.
3. Replaces Tiger-based frameworks with Leopard-based frameworks.
4. Apple debating whether to split the update in two—creating a smaller update to initiate wirelessly on the Apple TV with a larger update through iTunes.
5. Rentals will only launch with 20th Century Fox and Paramount movies in HD with Disney coming soon.
6. Current opening sequence replaced with purple/green opening sequence.

I can buy the big size and the other comments, but the requirement of the USB flash drive just doesn't make sense. Or maybe if it is true, then apple is working on a solution to NOT require the drive. I find it highly improbably that apple would open up the USB chastity belt at this point. if they opened it up to external storage, then the next thing that would happen would be people hooking up every external HD in existence to it. thus only needing the 40GB version and not the 160GB version. the network booting sounds probable along with the multiple downloads. download one installs netbooting, download 2 is the full 'new OS' for the :apple:TV

i cant wait to find out. . . maybe they will surprise us and have it done on 1 week instead of two???

Interesting tidbits nevertheless. I'm a little disheartened by the opening video change. I really like the current one.

For those that haven't seen the old opening,

from what I recall, apple was sued because the original opening image of the "image wall" was purportedly stolen from an artist or at least there was a striking similarity. that might be why they took it away -- or their putting the new one in line with leopard "universe" colors. meh, you only get to see it once anyway so I guess it's not that big of a deal.

Where abouts did you find the rumour? I doubt apple would make an update that requires a USB pen to carry it out. Although it is a UI makeover, I can't see the update clocking more than 500mb realistically. If it is 1.2Gigs+ maybe apple are taking the extra few weeks to set up some more servers :p.

A new intro is highly likely, apple have changed the packaging to ATV to use the leopard theme, so no doubt they will want the theme to follow throughout.

The truth about Take 2

According to my sources, the update (Take 2) will require a visit from a certified Apple technician, sent to your home from Cupertino. It is my understanding that this technician will carry with him 2 X 1 TB HDDs, packed in liquid nitrogen-cooled carrying cases (thus the "take 2" nomenclature, since he will be taking two.)

No one is allowed in the room while the update takes place.

It should take 2 seconds.

People in the area will be warned that some hair fallout as well as teeth-loosening may be a side effect.

So don't say you haven't been warned.

CONFIRMED.

My source inside said the exact same thing.

That is the most realistic rumor I think I've ever heard.

Ever.

Or maybe if it is true, then apple is working on a solution to NOT require the drive.

I have a feeling they'll get it fixed. However, if it's an operating system overall (new frameworks, etc)—I don't see how they are going to make it work with the current update process, as it would have to replace system files.

If I remember correctly, the current Apple TV O/S is around 400MB, and it's allocated partition on the Apple TV is around 1GB (including the recovery partition).

We'll find out in a few weeks.

jaw... where can I find the new opening?

As far as I know, it hasn't been posted anywhere if that rumor is even true.

Ridiculous rumor. Worst I've heard yet.

Notice I said "currently." If not via USB, then how do you suspect they update their testing units internally? Replace the hard drive?

So Tell me if this is true, I don't have to wait to buy Apple TV because I will get the newest hardware and the software will update what I buy within 2 weeks or whenever they release the new software for the Apple TV?

Reason I ask is I am in the market to buy a Apple TV but not sure if I should wait or go for it now and let Apple update the device? What would you do?

You are correct. The hardware is not changing. The only thing changing is the software that you will be able to download sometime in the next few weeks. No reason to wait in my opinion. You can spend the time before the update getting your media onto the Apple TV. Go for it!!!

Currently requires a USB jump drive to install.

I think you guys may be misunderstanding. During one part of the development (maybe even still), the update is requiring a jump drive for upgrade. I imagine this is a developer work-around until the download-and-install part of the code is finished.

Plus, requiring a unique USB-type upgrade during development would decrease the chances of the new take 2 OS being leaked.

So - what is a realistic date for this? I just purchased my Apple TV 2 days ago, and I LOVE it. I can't wait for the update though.

I keep reading - trying to find a projected date, and it ranges from a week or two, from the 15th of January. However, I also read that it may be the middle of February?

Any insights?

Hopefully sooner than later. I'd say less than two weeks though.

I asked an Apple rep if the Take 2 update provides support for rating songs directly from the Apple TV. She said yes, but I haven't seen this confirmed anywhere. Also, has there been any word on lyrics support?

I admit it was an 'impulse purchase'! :D

As it is I got 14 days from date of purchase to make a return!

If Take 2 isn't released by the 13th day, I will return it in protest! :p :D :p :D :D

That's ridiculous. That's not what "vaporware" means at all. That guy in the lawn chair on the beach doing HD videoconferencing on his watch in that 1999 Cisco commercial (or even in the new ones)... that's vaporware. This is just a very slightly late SW update.

OK so now we know what " vaporware " is, do we know what SARCASM is ?
( I thought I used enough 'Emoticons' to show the sarcasm )

If our Apple TV goes back it will have nothing to do with TAKE 2, more to do with Apple TV and my Sony HDTV not playing well together!

The middle of February seems more likely to me. The update WAS supposed to released within two weeks of January 15, but Apple decided they needed more time. This was on Apple's Hot News site on January 30:

Apple also announced that the free Apple TV software update enabling movie rentals is not quite finished and will now be available in another week or two. [Jan 30, 2008]

So, based on that, I'm hoping for sometime during the week of the 11-15th. Hopefully earlier, but I'm not holding my breath.... :)

Well that explains it! they must be having trouble working out a deal with Volkswagen to lease so many black, white and silver golfs to distribute said Apple technician!

So here we are, another monday night. Steve Jobs said "a week or two so what are the odds that it would be tonight? I can pray right?

i still think it has nothing to do with software or hardware. but rather with NBC negotiations.

if you see no buzz about NBC, hopes of it upgrading are zero imho.
