What? So it's actually NOT transparent? LOL... that $3,500 price tag is even more ridiculous.
Nope, definitely not transparent. This is what the inside looks like.

Interestingly, the HoloLens also starts at $3,500. I wonder if that had some influence on Apple's pricing...or maybe they're competing with the HoloLens?

$3,500 USD? LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!! You can't even make this up. At this point I'd say Apple doesn't even want to sell the product given the price.

Hey, at least their SSD modules are priced more fairly... $2,000 for 4TB while a WD Black 4TB costs $660. LOL. This company is a joke.

What's the big deal?

What if they were $15,000.00. What then? Solving the man-machine interface is what Apple does best.

My TV set was something priced like $2800.00.... Would I rather have another big TV set?

Albeit expensive, this is not just an AR/VR device, it's a brand new computer with a brand new experience. Heck, it can even be your own private movie theater inside your tiny NYC apartment, whose rent is past due because you spent the last $3500 on Vision Pro. Truly groundbreaking.
It's a standalone MR device with an Apple Ecosystem GUI. That's it.

It’s outrageously impressive. It’s outrageously expensive. It really is a fantastic piece of engineering and I’d love to have a play with one. I can’t help feeling though that it wouldn’t realistically become a part of my computing lifestyle. Maybe that’s short-sighted of me (no pun intended). Maybe we’ll see a ton of compelling reasons to own one once the developers get their hands on it. But they’re going to have to be REALLY compelling for that price.

The total pixel count cited by Apple amounts to less than 3400x3400 pixels per eye. That’s not bad, but certainly not good enough for “several giant virtual monitors”.
Everyone is working out resolutions for square/circular displays. Unless they said otherwise in the demo (I haven’t seen it yet) I’d assume they’d approximate the eye’s field of view, i.e. 3:2ish.

If it is 11.5MP per eye then that’d be about 4150x2770.

And, just as in real life you wouldn’t be looking at all of your giant monitors at the same time, my understanding would be that a landscape with several giant monitors can be kept in memory, allowing you to look around and see a portion of the landscape at any one time.

Day 1 purchase for me. AR is exciting and I'm willing to be a first adopter of this tech. It will only improve going forward.
First Adopter of AR? You know it's been around for years in wearable and none wearable form as MR and XR?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you're not first adopting any tech here other than Apples go with this device. You're choosing an ecosystem that is embedded across all of your other hardware choices so doesn't feel jarring.

I see this like the first iPhone release - major ideas for the AR/VR developers to start getting good inspiration for their own product lines.

$3500 is out of reach at this point for most people, but bringing the whole dimming feature over to an existing VR headset is "free." Or getting the gestures Apple uses ported over to other tech. Or improving the connection experiences with a PC/Mac going forward -- sign into your account on both, then look over at your computer to "pair" it.
I'm WAY more excited for what this will bring to the AR/VR space than the actual device itself.

Plus the launch of No Man's Sky on Steam for Mac with VR support is exciting - it shows us that they'll definitely be working with various gaming devs to release bigger titles for this thing.

See what the iPhone did for smart phones? That's what this is likely going to do for VR headsets.

It seems useless to jetsetters flying longer that 2 hours. The perfect marketing is to those flying long distances a lot. They can watch a movie or a tv show, and then do some work or browse social media - but at a battery pack of only 2 hours? Not gonna happen.

Well, I suppose on a modern jet plane you could plug it into power or get power from a USB socket perhaps?

So to me it doesn't seem useless. :)

Good response to @YayArea's outrage over the price. I was not expecting this product to be so good. Price is relative. But to disparage it because it's too expensive for some is simply absurd.
It's definitely expensive, but Apple is aiming high with the capabilities.

The thing is, at the distance you normally are to a monitor, it only fills part of your FOV. I think the Vision Pro will be comparable to a single 4K monitor at best. Of course you can move between monitors, but then you can similarly also switch workspaces on a single real monitor. In any case, when the Virtual Pro shows you multiple virtual monitors at once, in that view each of those monitors will only be rendered at FHD resolution or less. It simply won’t be the same as having an array of actual 4K monitors in front of you.

I think one model of the headset but the additional cost will be for people who need prescription lenses.
Confirmed during the WWDC 2023 keynote, though, was the detail glasses-wearers were hoping to hear. In a collaboration with lens-maker ZEISS — arguably best known for its camera glass — it was confirmed that Vision Pro would be compatible with Optical Inserts to suit those requiring vision correction. Each extra lens clings magnetically in place, Apple revealed, allowing them to be quickly removed should the headset need to be switched with someone who doesn't require eyeglasses themselves (or who doesn't share the same prescription).

The inserts will mean complete compatibility with the Vision Pro's headline features, such as its ability to be used as a 4K display with a wirelessly-connected Mac computer, and its eye-tracking control.

They are not. I have a Quest 2. Nothing I've tried (different straps, etc.) has made it comfortable for me to use more than maybe 20 minutes. Most of the discomfort comes from the battery weight. That's too bad because I was hoping it would work as a virtual desktop for some of my work.

I have Playstation VR2. They are cool. I use them for driving GT7 once in a while. They are heavy and hot and sweaty kind of things. Not really all that sweaty, but I do not like wearing them for longer than an hour.

Apple will be better and way way beyond what it does.

Can someone post the weight of the Vision Pro vs PS VR2?

This is big stuff this Vision Pro stuff. Whole new thing.

The Apple Vision visor remind me of so many visors described in Science Fiction books over the decades. What they really remind me of is The Ghost in The Shell, and The Major.

I hope they do a bigger battery pack, I'd trade the size for being able to use this thing for more than 2 hours.
seems there is a usb c connector to charge up battery, maybe connect it to power while sitting and watching a movie or gaming? or they will definitely sell the battery by itself so you have a full one ready to go for another 2 hours, just keep switching…not ideal but will work…obviously they will improve this as generations come…still getting it on day one, battery life doesn’t concern me

You should watch the recent NOVA episodes on PBS. They cover some interesting stuff about how human vision works.

It's fine to make some calculations perhaps from whatever experience you might have with photo resolutions or maybe astronomy or whatever. But I'm just saying that physiologically, vision is an interesting and surprising sense to study and prognosticate about.
