I can't wait to be reading on several giant virtual monitors. The resolution apparently is that good!
The total pixel count cited by Apple amounts to less than 3400x3400 pixels per eye. That’s not bad, but certainly not good enough for “several giant virtual monitors”.

Vision Pro headset can capture 3D video content - this is one of the first killer applications for these things.

Who is racing right now to release a cheap knockoff for Christmas Sales? Amazon? Google? Good Luck

This is one area it seems I was spot on:

1. Too expensive.
2. Does not have a place in the everyday workplace.
3. It's obviously a 1.0 device with a lackluster, 2-hour, heavy battery.
4. Will be a hugely niche product for at least the first few iterations.

I appreciate that Apple wants to release this early and get real-world feedback, but come on; they should've priced it at $2,399 or even less. At least then, it's somewhat affordable from the people who would splurge.

I am totally interested to see how many of these they actually sell in the first year. 200K units? less?

Maybe we're all wrong. Once the press get's there hands on it, the reviews will start and we will know if this will be know as Tim's device or will it solidify Tim's legacy of not having a single major breakthrough product.

Can't wait to read/see reviews of this device. Their presentation looks great, but it is just a mockup/simulation of what it looks like.

Not sure if people realize this, but you don't actually see through the screen, like how Microsoft's HoloLens is. You're just seeing what the cameras see in front of you. How well does it work in a dim room? Are the colors accurate? Do bright lights wash things out?

Showing your face/eyes on the front is cool too, but again, it's just another screen and not your actual face.
What? So it's actually NOT transparent? LOL... that $3,500 price tag is even more ridiculous.

Of course. They even said that there will be 100 Apple Arcade games available at launch! Why would anybody need PC VR?
Apple Arcade games haven’t exactly been very popular compared to Steam and friends.

It's cool and all, but I guess I don't understand who this is for. Rich apartment-dwellers and jet-setters constantly in confined spaces?

Who in the world is going to have this strapped to their head while capturing proprietary 3D photos/videos of their kids, instead of, you know, experiencing it firsthand?
It seems useless to jetsetters flying longer that 2 hours. The perfect marketing is to those flying long distances a lot. They can watch a movie or a tv show, and then do some work or browse social media - but at a battery pack of only 2 hours? Not gonna happen.

It's 2023, we're on the brink of a recession and Apple seems to think this is the right time to release a VR headset for $3.5k + TAX. Cook is smoking something...

Recession? Tired of hearing about recession. You pay more for groceries. I get it. That's inflation. Unemployment is very low! Never seen a recession with such low unemployment. Something is not perfect, but please do not call it recession.

Does GDP growth matter when we prognosticate recession? Did WikiPedia change their definition of recession in July 2022? Yes, they did. Why?

The alternative is a head-mounted battery, which I don't imagine would be comfortable.
They are not. I have a Quest 2. Nothing I've tried (different straps, etc.) has made it comfortable for me to use more than maybe 20 minutes. Most of the discomfort comes from the battery weight. That's too bad because I was hoping it would work as a virtual desktop for some of my work.

2 hours of battery life with a battery pack. Only Apple can get away with this in 2023.

full
I'm curious what you mean by "Only Apple can get away with this is 2023"? Sounds like you think Apple is doing something fraudulent or unethical.

Apple had to balance many considerations including power requirement of the headset, weight of the power supply, how long will someone use it without being connecting directly to power, etc? We have no idea of what those parameters are. I'm sure Apple has no ulterior motives in the size/capacity of the power supply. Will some think that this is a ploy to get you to buy and carry around a dozen extra batteries? I'm sure Apple would have wanted as long a portable experience as possible. That's a big selling point. This is most likely the best compromise for now.

Many airplane seats have power ports now.

Well yes it is.

Why do you say it is not?

Yes - it is :)

Vision is an interesting human sense.

I could not have been a bigger skeptic beforehand. Marketing it as a new computer changed my mind. I could never buy one—my wife would never stop making fun of me, but I do think this could become a new type of computing in several years. Especially from an accessibility standpoint.

It's a V1 for sure, but it's a start.

Sorry, should have indicated I was being sarcastic.

Apple already allows Steam Link on iOS, so at the very least, you should be able to stream flat PC games.

I think it's looking like a good value big ticket item like a home computer.

How about you go and buy a 100" OLED screen and a fancy surround sound system and fancy TV remotes for your living room. IF you compare in this way, you'll see that these Vision Pro Apple goggles are replacing big TV screens and a whole lot more. So I'd argue it's a good value.

I have a vintage "Mac Portable" c1990 - it was like $8000 in c1990. Heavy like a briefcase.

Anyone back in that era then rocking a Mac IIfx or even a IIci had spent a LOT of money just to own a powerful Macintosh.

Look at the newly released Mac Pro today. Horsepower! Anyone want to talk about how much power and expandable their PC system is? I mean Apple is making some top quality produce here. YES, you gotta pay for it.

But I know from experience that too many people pooh-pooh pricey new Apple stuff mainly because they know they can't afford it right now.

This is not an innovation like AirPods that are pricey - but anyone can afford instantly if they really want them. AirPods noise cancellation etc makes them great for every person. These new Vision Pro headsets will first be bought up by the privileged and the dedicated Johnny Mnemonics out there. After you see what they can do, you'll get them in a few years.

The thing most people have already seemed to have missed is that the Vision Pro Goggles can capture 3D VR video - just by hitting the record button. This means that fans of family photo's and family videos will certainly be early adopters.

Good response to @YayArea's outrage over the price. I was not expecting this product to be so good. Price is relative. But to disparage it because it's too expensive for some is simply absurd.

As a 3D designer, if they could demo a way to easily control and work with a complex 3d scene without a mouse or a keyboard, that would be exciting. But...since the market will remain small for this new device for the next several years, I'm not holding my breath for 3d software developers to develop for it.

As an AR developer, I've been crossing my fingers for a full blown visual AR development application. Reality Composer is simply a proof of concept application, with minimal functionality. To code in Xcode specific 3d ideas with control of lighting, object placement in relation to other objects all with a decent interface is a major headache. The 2 seconds that they showed the updated Reality Composer Pro in the demo, didn't look promising.

As for price...I had a daydream yesterday that they would keep the price under $2000 and make a huge deal about selling it at cost to get the world of developers behind it for version 1 at least. Oh dwell.

I WANT THIS!!!
I'm just not willing to part with $3,500 to get it. But, DAMN I want it!
Personally, I would remove my desktop monitors. Both at work and at home.
It doesn't last long enough for many movies these days (2+ hours). I hope it can take extra juice from either another battery pack or an extension USB-C cable to outlet.
No joysticks required, but supports them for games.

I also do hope Metal 3 with its not easier to port games will make the difference it needs to. I would rather Apple had bought a AAA studio and just went to town porting games over or making new ones. But, this is at least a step that was very much needed. Hopefully it's as easy as it sounds. Should make getting AAA games at least more of a realistic possibility.

I can't wait to own one!

Congratulations, Apple! It seems amazing for V1.

3D technology is still a thing on consumer products? I can't find a single 3D HDTV on Rtings, Amazon, etc. that isn't at least 4+ years old. And are there any consumer-grade 3D displays one might use with a desktop computer? Hmmm...

Well, how come you do not have a nice 3D VR video of your relatives and loved ones from 5 years ago?

Just as an example.

Vision Pro goggles will make it as easy as you make a short birthday party video with your camcorder. Right? Oh wait - you don't use a camcorder anymore. You use your iPhone to make a video of the birthday party. Is it 3D VR? No.

Yah, 3D TV was a fad. I got one. Called the cable TV company and said how come you are not broadcasting Wimbledon in 3D so I can watch it on my new $3300 Samsung LCD 3D TV set??? They didn't and still do not broadcast sports in 3D. What happened there? So you seen it all and know all about 3D enough to pooh pooh Apple ?

You will be shown, but the reason I post reponses on this forum is to get people reading this stuff to think about it a bit more rather than feeling settled that they know something. I can see that already people are getting the usual things about the new product wrong.

It is quite expensive but it is probably best for a new product like this to be very good right out of the box. Apple Vision is so good I want to try it. Who cares about crappola like Meta Quest or other pre-Apple-Vision goggles.
