Along with uBlock Origin legacy, adding gorhill’s other project, uMatrix, will go a long way to eliminate the YT garbage ads. The version you’ll want for that is 1.1.4. uBlock origin Legacy and uMatrix are the first (and sometimes the only) add-ons I install when running a Mozilla browser, especially on legacy Macs.

After a while, I went over to using Savetube, also by Sebaro. Less cumbersome, more congenial for my use (several downloads a day), guess it's a matter of taste.

It probably needs some tweaks to work with ArcticFox and/or on 10.6, but fwiw I also have an Automator service here that doesn't have a download limit because it operates on your own computer. This is how I watch basically all videos. Just assign the service to a keyboard shortcut in System Preferences.

You will likely at minimum need to install ffmpeg from MacPorts, because I don't believe the binary it offers to download automatically is compiled for 10.6. But it shouldn't be too much work.

No tweaks here, just click on the scripts on his page, they'll install automatically if you already have GreaseMonkey, thus:

ffmpeg/MacPorts: that's what the Sebaro himself recommended to install youtube-dl in order to download videos from services like Twitch, which View/Savetube cannot cope with. After something like 10 hours of churning Terminal I ended up with an error, possibly something to do with Python in 10.6 (but don't take my word for it, my IT memory is a fleeting substance.) And gave up.

Sorry, I read incorrectly, I thought "a few downloads a day" was a limit of the service. (Which would make sense since in order to download a 1080p stream from Youtube without software on your computer, they'd have to do some level of server-side processing.)

On arctic fox 27.11.0, the latest ublock origin legacy I can install is 1.16.4.2.1 from June 20th 2020. I hadn’t heard of this before however, so thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Is there any fix for this or is legacy now targeting newer Firefox as well?

If you edit the install.rdf inside the ublock.xpi it'll work. It's now targetting PM28/29 and dropped 27, but it still works. Change minimum version back to 27.9.4 in the PM section. Otherwise there is nothing wrong with the version you have.The filter lists still update fine.

I had to figure out that .xpi files used for add-ons is itself not a file, but a type of archive which only certain utilities will recognize as such, in order to reach the .rdf file wicknix is referring to here. I ended up turning to BetterZip 2.3.4 as keka, Archive Utility, and StuffIt weren’t seeing the .xpi as an archive.

Hey there. Long time user, first time poster. Just wanted to say thank you to everyone that has kept web browsing alive for my old MacBook A1181. I thought it was dead in the water until I ran across a YouTube video a few years ago where they listed Arctic Fox as a web browser that worked. I've noticed though that now a few of my favorite websites that worked in the past, no longer do. For instance, twitch.com (the twitch icon loads, thats about it), mlb66.ir, nhl66.ir, nfl5.ir (blank page) yrsprts.stream (it worked just fine on the previous Arctic Fox build but the newest update prevents any video to load)

Are there any settings or add ons I need to fix this or are the websites just not capable to work anymore?

Welcome! Twitch works, clumsily, in SpiderWeb, which is ArcticFox's little (or big, depending) sister. This is also the case with lots of sites AF no longer can cope with.

I appreciate that! I will definitely give that a try then. I don't really use my Mac a lot, I would normally use it as a way to watch another game if I was conflicted on what to watch lol

I have an absolute fresh install of 10.6.8 on a Mac mini 3,1 (2009) and the new Arctic Fox 27.12.0 crashes immediately on startup. I don't have a GitHub account and I wont get one, so I'll post everything here. Feel free to copy this to the Issues section on Github for better overview.

My Mac mini is an early 2009 base model with just RAM upgraded, to 4 GB. The HDD was wiped clean and then had 10.6.0 with all extra components installed from the disc image on Archive.org. Then I ran the software update to get it to 10.6.8 v1.1 and all other things updated to the latest except for iTunes (because nostalgia). Burn, iStat pro and Firefox 48.0.2 were the only apps I installed prior to AF, in that order. Only NoScript in Fx was added later (which was a PITA thanks to Mozillas disgusting authorisation and phone home features). Nothing else has been added.

So there's absolutely no previous profile or version/installation of AF that messes things up here. I provided the crash report directly below as well as a file attachment.

I must say it's disappointing that the authour has pretty much left the project for other very similar ones. It would be better if all efforts were focused on one project for Snow Leopard.

My Mac mini is an early 2009 base model with just RAM upgraded, to 4 GB. The HDD was wiped clean and then had 10.6.0 with all extra components installed from the disc image on Archive.org. Then I ran the software update to get it to 10.6.8 v1.1 and all other things updated to the latest except for iTunes (because nostalgia). Burn, iStat pro and Firefox 48.0.2 were the only apps I installed prior to AF, in that order. Only NoScript in Fx was added later (which was a PITA thanks to Mozillas disgusting authorisation and phone home features). Nothing else has been added.

I must say it's disappointing that the authour has pretty much left the project for other very similar ones, and that the new locomotive haven't even tested the new version on Mac OS 10.6…

This is a known issue but basically the work around is to just keep clicking on reopen or whatever the option is and eventually it'll work just fine.

You can always use 27.11.0 if the new one doesn't work. It's a mac 10.6 specific bug thats being looked in to. It doesn't affect 10.7+, WindowsXP or Linux. In the meantime i'd suggest using InterWeb, SpiderWeb, or firefox-legacy. All 3 of them have better web compatibility than AF does. AF's only real advantage these days is its a great all around lightweight browser for slower machines, and some people prefer the old school user interface.

I've used InterWeb and SpiderWeb but didn't have the kind of success I was looking for. I haven't come across the firefox-legacy yet but I'll see if I can find that and give it a try.

Apparently, at the time I suggested using uMatrix 1.0.0 for ArcticFox specifically, but to use it in tandem with the patched version of 1.16.4.30 for uBlock origin legacy.

Needless to say, I’ve been having very good experiences with Interweb on 10.6.8. It may not be AF, but it’d be a mistake to write it off if, for whatever reason, you can’t get AF 27.12.0 running in the SL environment.

So I looked up firefox-legacy and downloaded a browser called "Nightly". Apparently I used it before in the past like over a year ago because my old history was still there. twitch.tv didn't work, everything loaded but the actual video itself, however, I was able to watch a baseball game and hockey game without any problems. The stream quality had to be low but that's been normal behavior for a long time now

I still haven’t left snow leopard on the MacBook Pro 2010 I have. Eventually for gaming I’ll probably get Windows however. But snow leopard is definitely still a daily driver IMO for the most part if you really want it to be…

Mullvad VPN + OpenVPN via Tunnelblick 3.5.25 (build 4270.5160). At some point Viscosity started giving too many problems. Only caveat: I've used Mullvad for years, it's the best VPN I've come across, but their site doesn't work any longer in 10.6.8. So to access it, subscribe and set things up you'll have to use something more advanced, like the Linux VM wicknix has posted above, or the even smaller XP VM MicroXP-v0.82 also created by our friendly author (yes, some sites trash 10.6.8, but they'll run in antique XP!)

Thought I'd chip in...on Snow Leopard, my FireFox 48.0.1 is having some trouble, too. On the advice above, I downloaded ArcticFox 27.12.0 but it crashes immediately. The older version 27.11.0 loaded up OK, but couldn't get an internet connection (though FF could).
On my iMac9,1, I have another partition running El Capitan. Strangely enough, the earlier version - ArcticFox 27.11.0 - will load and connect to the web, but version 27.12.0 will not. (It's all a bit redundant, though, since FF 78.1.4 is already there.)

Meanwhile, FireFox 48.0.1 is mostly OK on Snow Leopard (while Chrome and Safari often won't load sites, even if they can find them). One glitch occured a few months back, when Google limited search functions for FF 48. There is a way around this - lie to Google's spybots and tell them you are running FF 52...

Otherwise, FF runs into trouble with sites of major art galleries (Tate, the Met, etc); it seems fashionable to bury simple HTML tags in fancy code/script, making their artworks invisible to all but the well-heeled élite!
