I have a 9.7 Pro and am really on the fence. This new iPad with the full sized screen is amazing and I would love to have it. But I just upgraded other Apple devices last month (watch and phone). I use a Microsoft Surface for work. I have a Macbook at home. It's hard to come up with enough use cases that would drive me to use the iPad enough to justify dropping $1k on it (that would be my net cost for a 128 GB Wifi plus all the accessories plus tax minus about $350 in profit for selling the 9.7 and accessories). That's a lot of dough for a device that I might not use as much as I expect.

Keeping my 12.9 gen 2 until the next refresh. There’s some nice features for sure but not enough right now for me to warrant the cost. As USB-C plays out in iOS and more workflows become apparent I’m sure my point of view will change but until then I’m satisfied with what I’ve got.

I am curious about the folios and keyboards though. Not much by way of specs and features are shared on the Apple site. I’ll have to wait and see I guess and look at them in person. Sure would be nice to have more color choices and a more robust external finish - especially since the entire tablet is now covered with it.

I have a 1 year and 5 month old iPad Pro 10.5 with LTE, Smart Keyboard, and AppleCare for another 7 months. I priced out the equivalent of my iPad in the new model and it came out to about $1500 with the new keyboard...As of right now I am not planning on upgrading.

I recently bought a 3rd party keyboard case that while not perfect has back lit keys, and for fast charging I've also bought a couple of 30 watt Apple USB Chargers with USB-C lightning cables (2 Meters so they were $30 a piece just for the cables), so at this point I've got a lot of money invested into the device. It's actually my primary device at this point and I just have a cheap 6 year old laptop I keep in a drawer for the 1% of time I need to use a Windows machine.

HOWEVER, a few months from now if I find a deal on eBay or something to that extent that saves a few hundred dollars I might pull the trigger...

I’d think about it if accessories were backwards compatible, if it had a headphone jack, and if the price was the same as the previous release. Now, as it is, I’m at $1500 for the iPad, $130 for AppleCare, $129 for a new pencil, and $150 for a new keyboard folio case (at least). Almost $1,600 after tax, and I lose the ability to use my fave B&O headphones.

Um, no.

If the pricing was inline with the 10.5 and outgoing 12.9 I would have strongly considered getting and 11 inch. But if I include the portfolio case I'm looking at $1070 with education discount for the 256gb version. I really only use the iPad for media consumption and light gaming and my 10.5 works flawlessly(had my launch day device swapped out for a display defect over the summer so its even newer) for what I do with it so I can't really justify the price increase when i won't be taking advantage of all the new internals. Maybe in another year or two if performance on newer versions of iOS drops big time but I'm happy with what I have now.

Only thing I would have changed would have been to get the 10.5 in space gray to have the black bezels. Not a fan of the white ones anymore lmao.

I’m considering the 11”, but only if I can get a decent price for my 10.5”. I have a Barclaycard 18-month financing deal that I wouldn’t mind using.
Okay. I thought the Barclay 18 month financing offer was only for new applicants?
I got my Barclay card 2 years ago. I’ve only used it this year. I was hoping to use the 18 month financing offer now. When I preorder my 11 inch yesterday.

I just bought a 10.5 (with smart keyboard) for less than 500 total all in. I had a feeling the new one would be a big jump and Apple would raise prices exorbitantly.

You can call Barclays and ask them to reinstate the offer on your account. They do it several times a year.

I was going to until my wife said a few weeks ago "My iPad is getting too slow." so now she is getting my 10.5" and it gives me a chance to hop on that smaller 12.9" that I've always wanted.

Apple is on a quest to subtly **** up every one of their beloved products it seems. I think I posted somewhere several months ago that I fully expect Apple to mess up the iPad, which for a long time has been one of their best devices with no real drawbacks.

They already took the Macbook Pro from "best laptop ever made" to "my next machine won't be a MBP" for me with the **** keyboard, useless Touchbar, dongle hell and unnecessarily large trackpad.

The new iPad Pro seems like a raw deal with the increased price, lack of headphone jack and no OIS for the arguably not so often used camera, no lightweight smart cover, no backwards compatibility with Apple Pencil etc. So much for buying into the Apple ecosystem.

I agree. No smart covers is a big issue for me, I never use cases, I hate the bulk, I don’t want the folio cover, but there’s no choice. Even though I can afford it, I think it’s too expensive, and when people have only recently bought all the add-ons that are no longer compatible, it’s downright wasteful. I think there will be a backlash against this latest money-grab move. I won’t be upgrading for as long as my ipads last, which I hope will be several years, whereas I used to upgrade iPads at least every 2 years, sometimes annually.

I still have a 9.7 pro. I was thinking of upgrading purely for the pencil since I use my iPad specifically for note taking and digital textbooks (so much highlighting). Not sure the cost is justified though if my current iPad still works flawlessly for those tasks.

I have a 1st Gen 12.9” and I’m sitting out. I was thinking of replacing my MBP with the new iPad and going iOS only but I’m not sure. I’d probably be better off staying put.

I still have and am very happy with my original 2015 iPad Pro. USB-C and the smaller design are tempting me, but I think I still want it to be more of a computer replacement than it is at this point. I don't want to have and use both a MacBook Pro and an iPad Pro, I want the iPad to be enough, but it just isn't there yet. Hopefully USB-C and iOS 13 push it over the edge, because it's pretty close for me. I actually used the iPad Pro as my only computer for over a year and I was able to, I just miss some software and capabilities.

Cult of The Mac article gives me pause for thought. Quote:

If you decide to forgo this newest model and wait for its replacement, remember that Apple refreshes its tablets about every 18 months. Think about whether you can wait until 2020 for a new iPad.

No way. Not until 6gb of ram on devices without the crazy 1tb tax. 1tb ssd now going for $150 all the time. Wait for discounts.

I don't have any reason to upgrade at this time for these new iPads. I have the 12.9 inch LTE version and a 10.5 LTE version that both still do everything I need them to do. I don't want to have to buy all new pencils and cases and so forth either

I don't remember the generation of my last iPad, but it's too old to run iOS 12 ;) I'm planning on replacing my ageing MacBook Pro with an iPad Pro as my daily driver at work – MS Office, email, terminal, note taking, that sort of stuff – and leave the laptop at home for the occasional DVD or CD rip, etc.

I don't have a current iPad to compare to the current models, except my wife's 10.5, which apparently is doing rather well for FaceTime, web browsing and Gardenscapes :p

So, to all 2017 IPP owners, when was the last time you used your iPad and thought, "damn I wish this thing had more RAM..."?

Never, I’m completely happy with my 10.5.

Easily provided my current ones don't break.

You are in debt for the two devices you currently have. The choice is obvious. While the new device is cool and neat there is nothing on them that your currently devices that you are close to paying off don't provide.

Four in 10 can’t cover an emergency expense of $400, Fed survey finds

Saving money is not a crime.
Wait that extra year.. and get one. Then you have the next one coming in 3-4 months. It's a continuous cycle and a hype, a ploy. People love their tech. I just bought a 10.5 in April, along with a Pencil. And a Smart Keyboard in May. I'm in debt and just got an iPhone XS Max, and an AW4. I use my iPad Pro 10.5 every few days (even if I do draw a lot on it) and I have no reason to upgrade to the new Pro and most of that power won't be utilized in many apps other than ones that I probably won't use. The new one is beautiful, a little bit bigger, but I can't afford reselling my iPad and accessories, and shelling out another 600-700 dollars. If I had a credit card with a big limit, maybe.. but I can't do it.

I have to pass as annoying as it is. I should've waited, but I had no idea it'd be coming and I'd want it so bad. #firstworldproblems

Yes. Not buying till OLED.

Why Are you under the assumption that OLED will be a consideration for the iPad? That’s been a rumored _for_ years and never has happened, likely due to supplier constraints/manufacturing. I suspect LCD will be used until micro LED is present, which will be a few years out.

Will be keeping my 10.5 512GB cellular and passing on these new ones. Still have 9 months AC+ on it and it was swapped a month or so ago under warranty. Would cost ~£1700 to go 11" with all the toys and that's laptop territory.

Also not too sure about the new keyboard... forces you to have their back cover that doesn't protect the sides and edges. I like my SC/ASK combo with an ESR clear back shell.

It does make me wonder if, had liquid retina been around last year when the X was launched, they'd have gone OLED at all....
