At the moment I'm very much happy with my iPad Pro 9.7"... however I think, towards the end of the year, I might look into the iPad Pro 10.5".

Haven't seen one in person (yet) and I'd like to see people's honest opinions of iOS 11 before I make the jump.

I went to one of the big box stores to take a look, and I was hooked immediately. The smoothness inherent in the screen refresh upgrade is gorgeous. The extra display real estate is a plus. At 512GB, the additional storage potential is what really sold me; no longer do I have to allocate space for my iTunes library on my MBP or carry a hard drive with me when I travel.

To be honest, I’m unimpressed by the 10.5. Sure its “Apples Best iPad Yet”. But for a complete redesign then it feels like a baby step when it should have been a leap.

10.5 screen! - Bigger is better. But when did anyone ever complain that 9.7 is the “wrong” size?
Less Big Bezel! - Less is nice and it still allows grip space. But aesthetically it still looks the same.
120hz! - A great feature... but its the answer to a problem nobody ever had
Full Size Keyboard! - Did anyone ever say “If only the on-screen keys were 2mm bigger”
Better Camera! - Capture the moment with an amazing camera... while ruining the moment for the people behind you

Please note that I’m not slamming the 10.5. The Screen-to-Size ratio is nice but (other than 4GB RAM) so much of the improvements seem to be things nobody asked for. And, considering how old the 9.7” design is, its not unreasonable to have expected this to be the time we get some parity with what the iPhone 7 offers.

Taptic Engine - Apple amazing Taptic improve the user experience. So where is it?
Force Touch - Omitting this creates an inconsistency to Apples User Experience
New TouchID - A mechanical Home Button just feels outdated.
Pencil Management - A redesign should have put consideration on where to put a pencil

Again. Great machine but my 9.7 (which is running perfectly on iOS11) should be fine until the next 10.5 update.

All those are negligible. I have force touch on my iPhone 7 and I can count on one hand how many times I used it. I actually turned it off because I accidentally use it instead of my desired effect. The taptic engine is not a thing I care for one way of the other and the new home button Meh. I'll take 4gb of ram and 120hz screen.

I just went and checked one out in the Scottsdale Apple Store and it was very nice... but not enough to take the money hit selling my current 9.7" Pro. I played with it for a solid 10 minutes, surfing, gaming, did some typing on the new keyboard case and drew on Procreate. While the larger screen is nice for drawing, the rest of my activities didn't seem all that much different or better. Not $400.00 more, anyway. (Price to get the new base model with keyboard case after eBay sale of current 9.7" base model with keyboard case.) But it was nice.

I am going to buy this new iPAD only if I sell mine for a good price. So far this has not happened.

Personally I don't think there are major changes, still I think that it's a good upgrade. I am hoping, though, for someone to confirm I can run MKV lossless files extracted from UHD-BDs:
https://torrentfreak.com/more-pirated-ultra-hd-blu-ray-disks-leak-online-but-mystery-remains-170612/

That alone is reason enough for me, if my current IPP 9.7 won't be able to do the same using nPlayer, in the future. As of today it can't run these files properly, it requires a lossy conversion.

if i didnt have to give up free microsoft word, excel, etc., then yes.

but it's not worth it IMO

I was all for keeping my 9.7 and holding out for the next iPad. Then I realized waiting 12-24 months for something that may or may not come to fruition as rumors are saying was a little too reserved. Canceled my pre-order, but was lucky enough to test one out and walk out the door with one on launch day.

Higher Power Charger - The current charger seems underpowered for the Pros

Most of the things in your list actually ARE things that people wanted.

1. There were a lot of complaints that the 9.7" Pro had the same screen size and RAM as the Air 2, and really should have just been the Air 3 minus Pencil support. (I have a feeling that was the original plan, but the 10.5" Pro just wasn't ready yet.) And I have to say, the 10.5 really does feel like quite the sweet spot. Even Federighi admitted at John Gruber's show at WWDC that the 9.7" Pro made typing feel cramped.

2. People are really starting to hate bezels, especially on the iPad. On this new model, you can barely tell there are bezels at all when you hold it. That addresses a huge number of people who hated the old bezels.

3. There was noticeable lag with Apple Pencil, and it fell short of the Surface Pen's performance. Now it's better than the Surface Pen thanks to the 120hz refresh rate.

4. It's worthwhile to put a better camera in the iPad, even if you don't want to use it for photography. One of the big new features of iOS 11 is document capture for instant markup. I did that with 3rd party apps a lot in iOS 10 on my first gen iPad Pro, and the experience was poor. It's built into iOS 11 and will be much easier and better, partly thanks to the nice camera.

I do agree with you that the home button from the iPhone 7/7 Plus would have been nice to have here, and I'd like to have better Pencil management without having to buy that expensive leather sleeve. Also, getting the full benefit of the fast charging requires you to piece together a USB C 29w charger and USB C to Lightning cable from the Apple Store, and that's kind of lame. But all in all, this felt like such a solid upgrade even from the 9.7" Pro, I couldn't resist.

That's a biggie. My job pays for my Office 365 subsription, so luckily I didn't have to give that up by switching sizes.

I'll play devils advocate to a few

1) Apple is notorious for throwing what is 'perfect' by the way side not long after.

I.e. IPhone 5 is perfect added screen dimensions while retaining one handedness. Then came 6/6+ onwards
And iPhone 5 rhetoric completely forgotten

16gb from Schiller is sufficient with how cloud oriented consumers are. Not long after, a 32gb standard base storage spec bump across product lines

The trashcan Mac Pro is the pinnacle of 'can't innovate anymore my arse' with a pre-release announcement of a modular Mac Pro next year, in an unprecedented move

Trash talking marketing FUD is standard procedure.

A lot of people say 10.5 ASK feels better but still not a full keyboard and not as appreciable as the screen size difference itself

2) People hate iPhone bezels way more than tablets, I think most people dont mind bezel since they hold onto their iPad 2's for eternity, etc.

3) no counter argument, truly impressive tech and applaudable. But i still dont find 50ms latency unbearable by any means. And 120hz as well vs 60

4) 6s-like camera to 7-camera doesnt really matter in a tablet unless you become one of THOSE people to use iPad in public like its a phone, which is encouraging bad behavior

The iPad Pro 1 camera which was like the air2 camera I believe to gen 2 12.9 is a quantum leap, tho that thing and iSight was in dire need of updating especially worsened with a massive screen

I thought my 9.7 Pro was perfection that would be hard to make better, but after seeing the 10.5, once again Apple made quite a bit of incremental improvements, that take as a whole, make the whole experience significantly better.

Is the 9.7 just fine? Yes it is. But the 10.5 has this other-worldly feel - like a computer left behind by advanced space aliens - it just feels so perfect.

Yes, I'm very very tempted. Lets see if I can sell the 9.7 and I'll make the move.

Former 9.7 Pro owner, just got my 10.5 Pro, absolutely love the bigger screen and 120Hz refresh rate.
My iPhone 6s looks laggy after viewing the new Pro screen.:(

I think for those who have not owned an iPad Pro, with all of these used 9.7 iPad Pro's now flooding the market for sale, as others are upgrading to the new iPad Pro's, this will give other users who want an iPad Pro the advantages of experiencing some of the latest features for a cheaper price point.

There were always used 9.7 iPad Pro's available for sale on various sites, but now the used market is saturated with them for a good prices.

This. I'm on a MacBook right now and scrolling on web pages feels choppy. Unfortunately i returned the iPad because i feel a standard laptop ist still better suited for me, but i miss that display :/

Ill be sticking with my Pro 9.7 as a few weeks ago I was perfectly happy with it, but compared to the new 10.5 I am impressed by the bigger screen and ProMotion. I think the 4 GB RAM is a big thing but I never really stretch my Pro in any case. I only ever use stock iPad apps and MS Office.

I think I'm going to stay with my current Pro and upgrade at the next refresh whether that be 2018 or early 2019.

Tempted indeed! I bought my iPad Pro 9.7 128GB with cellular second hand just in May this year thinking all Apple would do is make the screen size larger, and made it faster (A9X is plenty fast already). But who knew they would also make the screen refresh rate 120hz, which is IMO the best thing after going retina. And A10X, a 6 core beast. And 4GB RAM paired with the upcoming iOS 11 which will make even the 9.7's 2GB RAM already a hampered experience for multiple apps running when installed.

Sure is tempting but the current market in which to sell your iPad Pro 9.7 is terrible. I checked out the prices on eBay and the market is flooded with 9.7 inch Pros meaning those selling to upgrade are taking a double hit (less for selling their Pro and the increased cost for the new 10.5 inch Pro, which if you buy should maybe be the 256 GB version)

It is better in general (at least in my opinion) as far as its general functionality, but I was referring specifically to lag.

I did have an apple pencil but I sold it a while back, Im tempted to use again but for my usage Id rather have a smaller pencil with at least an eraser function like the surface pen I have and have enjoyed using. I just never got comfortable using it, it feels slimy and cheap and thought it was a shame it didnt get a redesign. Its hands down the weakest thing about the current pros.

I can see the slimy part, but I disagree that it feels cheap--I think it feels solid and has a really nice weight to it. A lot of people seem to like putting little sleeves on the outside to give it a little more grip, but I haven't felt the need to do that yet--I can keep a good grip on it.

I think it does feel cheap and I really hope they consider updating it later this year, possibly with a new refreshed smart keyboard with backlighting. Backlighting is essential and they could do this so easily but I think its right to make without for now, recoupe the R and D costs and then release the backlit version. Id happily pay $200 plus for a backlit keyboard
