Are you embarrassed to use the Air in public?

  • Unfortunately, yes, I’ve had this feeling.

Everyone I’ve shown it to has been impressed with the thinness, lightness and appearance. I have the black one. Nobody asks about cameras or batteries or speakers or anything. They can’t even believe it’s in a case because it’s so thin.

LOL, now I want to buy an Air just to see if anyone is rude to me about it in public. I doubt anyone would say anything or even look askance at it. 😂
Honestly, you should be ashamed. How can you go around flaunting that iPhone Air in public? Think of the children who will force themselves to have these unrealistically slim iPhones! It’s shameful. Apple’s pushing these thinness standards while the Pro models are still out here all thicc as a brick. It’s like they want us to feel bad for carrying a phone with actual substance. What’s next!? Pro users getting dirty looks for their voluptuous frames? Sorry, some of us like a little heft with our horsepower. Let’s stop pretending every phone should look like it just skipped charging for a week. Own your chunky phones Pro users. Thin isn’t everything. 🤣

FYI mods I’m totally joking. Please don’t ban me 🥺

There’s been an unfortunate amount of negative chatter about the Air lately, and Pro (Max) users in particular (not all of them, of course) often seem eager to prove it shouldn’t even exist. So here’s a question for Air users: have you ever caught yourself, while using your Air in public, feeling a little embarrassed that someone might see you with this so-called “compromise” phone?
Nah when I hear (haven’t see in public yet) an iPhone Air customer, I think 🤑 as a shareholder as these people are willing to pay more for a compromised iPhone and experience and it’s making me 💰💰💰

These thread topics are getting weirder and weirder. After weeks of threads like this "the Air is amazing" vs. threads like "the Air is the worst ever" we now have a thread asking whether people are embarrassed to use an iPhone Air.

Why would anyone be embarrassed to use an iPhone? I wouldn't even be embarrassed if I used an iPhone 3GS in public. Or an old Nokia.

Anyone seriously judging me because of what phone I'm using can duck right off anyway.

Miss my Nokia 3310. That was indestructible. Too bad it got stolen.

My OG iPhone used to be my alarm clock but it got hidden somewhere during spring cleaning and I don't know where it is now. :( The 3GS I traded in for more than the cost of the 4S, iirc. Love the feel in hand of those phones. I always had to use cases on later models because either the edges were too sharp or the phone felt too slippery. Sometimes both.

I don't think other people care. Or, like when I see someone pull out an iPhone X or even iPhone 6, I just think it's funny. I don't look down on them for it.

I was referring more to the fact that in the iPhone community, especially among Pro (Max) users, the Air has been criticized quite harshly. Not by everyone, of course, but by some. Imagine a situation where an Air user is sitting in a café with their phone, and someone sits down next to them, pulls out an orange Pro Max, and gives the Air user a slightly sly look. The Air user immediately remembers all those discussions on MacRumors and other forums, and starts to feel a bit uncomfortable.

This would never happen in reality unless that pro max user was you and you wanted to just act out your fantasy.

I heard one of the younger Apple employees giggle behind my back when I picked up one of the Airs on display. I promptly put it back down. Walked around the table to the Pros and picked up a Pro Max. I looked up toward the same Apple employee, raising my eyebrows as if to ask for approval, and she gestures with a slow nod of her head, blessing my choice of phone. After my proper purchase was complete, she even gave me her phone number, 692-7753, with the offer to call anytime. But alas, I’m already taken. I shudder to think what outcome would have befallen me had I purchased the Air.

This would be wonderful, but unfortunately I think this is a possible scenario, based on what some Pro (Max) users have written even on this very forum.

Edit: And based on the poll results.

Just to clarify for everyone. I don’t actually own the Air myself. However, based on what I’ve seen and heard, I really like it and I’m considering it as my next iPhone when I eventually upgrade. That’s why it bothers me that so many people who do like the Air have to listen to comments like “it shouldn’t even exist” or “this phone is one big compromise” from people who can’t see beyond their own use case. And according to the poll, some people are already feeling uncomfortable because of this toxic environment.

Which forum members are you claiming who were given a sly look?

Well, I didn’t mean it quite that literally. More like a general sense that you can sort of feel in the air sometimes, you know? Not really about any specific individuals, but more the kind of vibe that tends to show up in discussions here and there.

Well, the numbers don’t lie. It’s time to check the poll again. As of this writing, the situation is:

130 responses.

17.7% of respondents (23 people) have answered yes.

why exactly would one be embarrassed OR proud using an iPhone?

This feels like a thread from 2010. I would be proud rocking a Palm Pre if it fit my needs.

This whole conversation is so weird. Yet at the same time it is entertaining. The only time I notice someone’s phone is when it’s all smashed up. Then I just feel bad for the phone.

The idea of looking down on someone for whatever phone they use is just such a weird concept.

I have not sensed that all. I am sure 99% of the forum members would say they have sensed this either. I think we are looking at a deeper issue here with you personally if you don’t me saying when you brought up this topic and started this thread.

Are you really okay?
