This was the first year I thought that maybe I wouldn’t upgrade. My wife and I do the upgrade program and we were enjoying our 14 Pros. However, the past few months have been odd, both our batteries have gone to absolute crap. The battery on our two phones have been worse than any other iPhone we have had. It’s terrible.

We will both be upgrading to the 15 Pros.

Yep getting a 15 pro getting sick of this damn hand warmer I don’t remember my previous iPhones ever getting this hot.

I've got an iPhone 14 Pro so there's no need for me to upgrade for a while. I upgraded from the iPhone 12 Pro last year mainly for the Pro Motion but other than that, there was nothing really wrong with that phone. Admittedly, it took quite a bit of will power not to splurge on the 13 Pro for the same reason.

With the prices of phones nowadays, there needs to be a more compelling reason for me to upgrade. Thinner, curved bezels, USB-C port, titanium chassis are all welcome changes but nothing more than nice-to-haves for me personally.

Having said that, I'm always excited when new iPhones are released.

I'm tied to a contract with my 13PM, which will be fully paid next year (I hate these 36 months plans now).

I'm waiting for the 16PM or even 17 to be honest.
when i got my 13 pro max, they still had the 24 month contract option. they wanted to put me on a 36 month, obviously, but i was able to change it. thankfully, i'm upgrade eligible in a couple months. not looking forward to a 36 month contract, but i'm hoping for some excellent trade in offers.

I wasn’t going to even upgrade from 13 to 14 and I fell for the useless dynamic island in the end. I also gave up my midnight blue 😭😭😭 I expected DI to have blossomed by now but no one seems to care much for it.

I am unlikely to upgrade, but, if Apple actually pull something out the bag I may be there. It would have to be decent colours on the pro/pro max, but any exciting colours tend to miss pro upwards :(

I can appreciate this sentiment. Even if I'm not planning to upgrade myself right away, it's always interesting to see where things have gone with the latest innovations.
10 years ago I agree, but nowadays iPhones didn't change much since the XS Max. It's basically the same phone for years. I don't understand people wanting to upgrade each year or 2 for basically the same device. We don't change our computers every year or 2, so why the need to change our phone so often ? I really don't understand that. New phones aren't really exciting anymore.

Yeah I agree, there are only a few minor changes/improvements every year which could be nice to have for some people, but otherwise it’s the same phone. Upgrading 4-5 years later or when your phone stops getting software updates completely seems more reasonable. And Apple supports their phones for up to 6 or more years, which is why you can still manage to find people using iPhones 7/8 today that actually work perfectly fine for them.

For me it’s not just the cosmetic look of the phone but it have a lot to do with the battery for me. The XS Max signal bands were horrible. I was paying for service and would lose service for several times a day. That’s also the same time I started working at the Post Office and it’s very important to have a phone and service that works. I went from the XS Max to the 12 Pro Max which was great the first year. The battery life on the 12 Pro Max is horrible. I had to carry a portable battery pack to charge my phone 2-3 times a day until I got home from work. Of course Apple ran their diagnostics and said the battery was fine and refused to change the battery, even though I had AppleCare+ and volunteered to pay for the battery change. The 14 Pro Max has been great, but of course the battery will start to deteriorate soon and I will have the same problem as the 12 Pro Max.

Seems the odd number iPhone's last several years have the better battery life.

-XS was mediocre
-11 Pro Max a battery champ
-12 Pro Max battery was average
-13 Pro Max back to amazing battery life
-14 Pro Max has good battery life, but not like the 13PM
-15 Pro Max will have a larger mAh battery plus the A17 supposed to be truly next gen and extremely efficient.

I agree it’s basically the same phone if you lay the iphones from the Xs max and up face up on a table. A rectangular phone with Face ID hardware on the top and speakers and charging port on the bottom. Power button on the left and volume and mute on the right. If that’s your idea of what constitutes basically the same device it seems superficial.

Many for consumer discretionary products dont change dramatically from year to year. Many dishwashers cost less than an iPhone and yet people don’t upgrade their dishwashers once a year to your point. But I do know people who change their cars out yearly.

The phone for many is a very personal device with some people spending a large amount of time on the phone for reasons of their own so for those people they want what they want.

But the iPhones since the max have changed fairly drastically in terms of form and function. I use my powerful desktop for big projects I can’t do on its own, but yeah my custom built intel desktop is basically the same as the 10 year old desktop it replaced in the same way a Honda accord circa 1980 is the same basic car as a Honda accord circa 2023.

I have a XS Max that I love dearly but the 64gb storage limit is hindering, and the lte/Wi-Fi performance has become spotty. Like the components are failing or something.

I’m debating going 14 pro, as the rumored price bump for the 15 is making me apprehensive. I don’t have it in me to tolerate this inflation of prices on everything. But yeah I’ll see what the 15 pro has to offer, I’m not convinced of the titanium. Too soft. But the rest of the specs look good. If they don’t fleece us (ha), then yeah sorta planning on getting the base pro model

I usually upgrade every year but this year am planning to stick with my 14 Pro Max. The improvements are getting smaller and smaller every year and common sense tells me stick with my perfectly fine 14PM for another year. I probably shouldn't have upgraded from last years 13PM.

Been reading up on the iPhone 15 Pro Max rumors, and it sounds internal wise, hardware will be a major leap forward. The new A17 built on a lower process meaning much more efficient and better on battery, plus Apple is making the phone thicker stuffing in larger batteries than the 14PM. So those two combined will give the 15PM insane battery life.

-Plus the bezels around the phone will be 1/3rd thinner
-Dynamic Island pill bar will be a bit smaller
-Brighter screen
-USB-C charger
-Possibly titanium sides
-The edges of the phone will be a bit more rounded, not as sharped and squared off as the current iPhone 12 to 14.
-8GB RAM bumped up from 6GB

OK OK! So this thread has got me, ....err...considering the possibility. Those of you who sell their current iPhones, when do you sell? Do you lock in a deal with anyone? (Just curious you understand!😎)

I am happy with my… wait for it… iPhone 8, and if Apple provided more software updates maybe I’d consider prolonging its usage. But the new iOS 17 won’t be available for the A11 devices, and it seems too cool (much improved keyboard, and interactive widgets yay!) so I’ll probably be upgrading sooner or later.

I will consider the iPhone 15 Pro, but only if the weight of the terminal is significantly reduced thanks to the titanium frame. If it sits between the 150 and 170g, that’s a check for me.

The other check is the A17 itself. We expected that, thanks to the transition to 3nm this new generation of SoCs would be a new big jump with a much improved architecture, like what happened with the A10, or the A12, or the A14. However, if the A17 is another overclocked A15 (just like the A16), then I’ll probably just pass, because it will be A LOT of money here in Europe.

If this two conditions aren’t met, I’ll probably stick with a third gen SE, but I still have hopes.

I’m using a 12 mini and an Apple Watch S4. I think this year my money is going to go towards a new watch but might do both after seeing what’s released!

I was a late adopter of the Watch but of all my Apple devices it’s the one I notice the most in daily usage, even if it’s not the one I “look at” the most. When I bought it, some folks on this forum were saying they would “finally” trade up from S0 or S1 to S4, which was signaling battery degradation at the end of a 3-year cycle, so I thought my upgrade cycle might be the same from S4 to S7. But it hasn’t been until this year (S9!) that I’ve had some hiccups with battery life that caused enough inconvenience that I noticed the watch missing.

On the phone side, the 12 mini suffers from a physical form factor that limits battery capacity at current technically feasible battery density, and I’ve also noticed it overheats more quickly than my partner’s 13 non-mini. So while I’m looking forward to a new phone too, I don’t like to spend on both in the same year, and the watch is the bigger loss (for me and what I need- Apple Pay including my transit card) if it dies while I’m out.

Still deciding whether I’ll buy the cellular edition of the watch again. Cellular was great for maybe the first 2 years, then I noticed a significant battery hit from taking calls or streaming music on cellular. So I’m not sure it’s worth the extra up front cost + monthly fees over the life of the watch, even though it’s just a hundred or so bucks a year.

All of that said, I appreciated reading some of what others are putting together about the smaller chip process and the higher battery capacity adding up to significantly better battery life for the 15… maybe despite my own “rule” this year could be the first time I buy both phone + Watch at the same time!

Thinking I’m gonna keep the 13 Pro Max another year.
  • Sierra Blue is too pretty to leave
  • Yearly upgrades don’t mean as much as they used to
  • This one’s almost paid off
  • My battery is at 87% capacity, so I may get that replaced. (It feels more like 75%, but I still only need to charge once a day and I’m on it all day.)
