I know it’s early to ask this question, but I am interested to see what everyone is planning on so far. Some people upgrade every year, some people might be holding on to a much older iPhone but are holding out to finally upgrade this generation, or maybe there’s a specific feature some people have been waiting on.

Rumored features (some may be Pro-only):
  • USB-C
  • Action button replacing mute switch
  • Periscope camera lens (5-6x zoom)
  • A17 - First 3nm Apple chip
  • 8GB RAM
  • WiFi 6E
  • Qualcomm X70 modem
  • Titanium frame with more rounded edges
  • Slightly smaller body with same screen size
  • Smallest bezels of any phone
  • Red color
  • Higher price
  • Qi2 wireless charging standard
  • Increased battery life
    • Bigger battery sizes
    • More efficient LiDAR scanner
    • More efficient display driver
    • A17 Chip - up to 30% more efficient (already listed above)
    • Qualcomm X70 - more efficient (already listed above)
On the other end, iPhone upgrades have never been so incremental, and it’s financially and environmentally smarter to hold on to your perfectly functioning iPhone now.

So, as of right now, are you planning on upgrading to the iPhone 15 series? Why or why not?

Edited 7/4/2023 to add new rumored features.

You did a nice job of summarising the rumoured new features. You seem to be a very analytical guy; I like the way you included "higher price" in the list which gets top marks from me for your rigour in compiling the list even though I doubt that particular "feature" will be a driver for many people! I also like the way you summarised the individual sub-features that should contribute to increased battery life; so many articles I've seen about this neglect to even mention the Qualcomm X70 that, given the power efficiency claims that Qualcomm have made for the X70, might have quite a big effect.

I must confess that even the increased price isn't a total negative for me. Don't get me wrong, I don't want a price increase, but trying to be a glass-half-full guy the only positive I can see on that is that it might just thin out the herd for the pre-orders-opening stampede so my heart-in-mouth fight with the ordering system this year to get a launch-day Pro Max might not be quite as fraught as it sometimes has been in previous years. Clutching at straws to be positive on that one!

As mentioned an increase in price isn't an active draw for me. I'm also a bit "Henry Ford" when it comes to my iPhone colour so the red option is irrelevant to me and I'm not sure that 8GB or RAM (now somewhat in doubt by the way, other rumours say they will stick at 6GB this year even for the Pro models) will make any difference for my use case. I also don't really care about WiFi 6E or the Qi2 charging.

For me by far the two biggest draws are increased battery life (first) and the periscope lens (second) and after that, in no particular order, comes titanium frame (don't particularly care about the rounded edges), slightly smaller body (I'll take it as a positive but it's a tiny plus for me), smaller bezels and the action button.

Thanks for the kind words! I need to do an update on that original post as there have been some rumor changes since then.

Battery life improvements are the biggest draw for me too.

I was initially planning to only upgrade to a new watch, but my 14 Pros battery life is getting worse and worse and - previously coming from a 12PM - I do miss the bigger battery. So I guess I will be upgrading once again this year, probably to a 15PM, even though I am not looking forward to carrying a brick around again. 😬

Or: Replace the battery for 100 bucks and 4 hours of your time on Saturday. Save 1,100 bucks that way. Also the iPhone 16 supposedly has a different size/form factor. I’d wait if I were in your shoes.

On the apple upgrade plan so I am going to upgrade. At this point might as well, it is also my audit busy season so it is a small thing to look forward too each year to help make it through the busy season.

I too plan to upgrade, first with my travels I really want the Better Optical Zoom, 2nd longer battery life (this I only need while traveling) I have a 14 PM and historically the trade in values are better over all that first year so the upgrade cost is not too bad. And lastely which really is number one reason, since my first iPhone which was 3, I always purchase the smallest available GB, last year I went with the 128GB and a day after ordering regretted that I did that. So plan to go with 256GB this year.

I plan to upgrade. Already sold my 14 Pro 128 to break even and I’m currently using the iPhone SE (2022) that I use every year before the new one comes out.

I loved the Pro, but I think I might opt for the 15 Plus this year since I am trying to get into the habit of using my main Sony camera.

I went through a very similar memory size journey last year - I wanted the 256GB PM but on launch day could only get the 128GB and as I was about to go on a long trip I wanted/needed (well, OK - wanted!) to do a launch-day purchase. We might yet both get lucky with memory size this year. There has been a rumour in the last few weeks that for the Pro models the entry-level (base) memory might be bumped to 256GB. Given the rumours of more price increases for the Pro models this year, possibly increasing the price differential between them and their non-Pro screen size equivalents even further compared to current pricing, I'm not discounting that rumour since it would be another way for Apple to justify an increasingly big Pro/non-Pro price differential if that is how pricing pans out this year.

Interesting to read your attitude to battery life too. I'm also exactly the same on that. I'd characterise myself as a battery life obsessive but like you it only really matters to me when travelling when I want multi-day battery life so that if I'm on an overnight or weekend trip it doesn't really matter if I don't pack a charger.

Just came across this topic. I used to upgrade my iPhones every year-two years in the past, but now I am likely to stick with my 13 Pro for one more year. One of the reasons is that iPhone 15 Pro is unlikely to bring any new major features that make me want to upgrade according to the rumours. It will have the same dynamic island (not a big difference for me from the notch), a little upgraded 48MP camera (I no longer use it as a pro, therefore I don't care) and titanium bezels (I use my phone always in a case) and thinner ones on the screen. Finally, the main reason would probably be the fact that my iPhone 13 Pro is still in perfect condition after almost 2 years of usage and I can't basically feel the need for another upgrade.

Extremely unlikely I’ll upgrade, there’d have to be a serious battery life improvement to make me consider, there’s nothing else in the rumours that tempts me. I’m very happy with the 13 pro just tret it to a new battery, only cost £40 from a phone shop in town, certainly a lot cheaper than a brand new phone. Considering upgrading my S6 watch though, though will depend on what we get this year, darker coloured ultra could tempt me, so there’s that expense to add to the unlikelihood of a phone upgrade.

Yes, my XR is tired and 3GB ram just doesn't cut it these days. 5 years is a good run.

Looking forward to 3nm A17, more RAM and titanium. Not looking forward to the obnoxious camera bump.

I only got my 13 Pro in December 2021 & the battery is still at 88% so it seems a bit early to upgrade especially if the 15 Pro misses out on the perescope camera as widely reported.

I confess that I keep swithering, driven by 'the itch'.

I know I'm happy with my 12Pro: battery remains 86%, 128GB storage only half full, screen good & protected and I do like patina on the Snakehive leather case which matches my wallet.

I would surely be content if only I didn't know there has been a 13 & a 14 and soon there will be this 15/15Pro ...

I've even checked the trade-in and resale value of my 12Pro and started to weigh up picking up a discounted 14Pro rather than the rumoured 15Pro!

And, of course, I've been reading this thread to glean what other nutters are thinking ;)

Think I'll be upgrading as my iPhone 12 has a shattered camera lens, though everything else works perfectly.
Anyone now if Apple Trade In programme will take a phones in this condition?
