My 13mini contract ends next year when the iPhone 16 comes out.

Must haves for me to upgrade:
-USB C
-Periscope or 4x optical zoom
-All day battery life
If the rumours are correct the 15P/PM, whatever they will call them, will fulfil your demands! Maybe you can get one on discount next year instead of the 16…😎

Surely the 15 will be the best thing that's happened to the iPhone, since the iPhone? Again :)

Well, I mean... isn't that true every year, by definition?

I suspect that might have been Big Stevie's point and the reason for his smiley. He very possibly has the same reaction as I do at a very specific time every year.

I've been following iPhone since the iPhone 4 - the first one I got - and have watched every iPhone launch live ever since. I can't remember as far back as Steve Jobs so I won't tar him with the same brush but it drives me mad when we get to the bit in Tim Cook's presentation when, pretty much every single year, he says about the latest flagship model - "this is the most advanced iPhone that we've ever built" (not an exact quote every year but pretty close I think). It annoys me so much because as you (zarmanto) correctly point out it's such a vacuous statement and he always delivers it as if that's some sort of amazing revelation that we're all supposed to be in awe at. I mean, what would be the alternative? "Here's the new iPhone 15 Pro Max. We're really excited to show you this even though it isn't as advanced as the 14 Pro Max that we released last year."?!

It's always irritated me as well. Somehow I doubt it would please the shareholders if Tim came on stage and said "it's the worst iPhone we've ever made and were sure your going to love it".

I confess that I keep swithering, driven by 'the itch'.

I know I'm happy with my 12Pro: battery remains 86%, 128GB storage only half full, screen good & protected and I do like patina on the Snakehive leather case which matches my wallet.

I would surely be content if only I didn't know there has been a 13 & a 14 and soon there will be this 15/15Pro ...

I've even checked the trade-in and resale value of my 12Pro and started to weigh up picking up a discounted 14Pro rather than the rumoured 15Pro!

And, of course, I've been reading this thread to glean what other nutters are thinking ;)
I'm in the same boat, i'm ok with my 12PM but would like to trade it in before its worth nothing. I don't have a use really for an extra device or someone to pass it down to so. Current value is $460, if i do upgrade it would be to a 15PM.

I know. My comment was largely tongue-in-cheek, for the very reasons that you cite.

... it drives me mad when we get to the bit in Tim Cook's presentation when, pretty much every single year, he says about the latest flagship model - "this is the most advanced iPhone that we've ever built" ... it's such a vacuous statement and he always delivers it as if that's some sort of amazing revelation ...
Yup... all true. Some would argue that it's all just the mark of a good salesman; it's that "P. T. Barnum" style "There's a sucker born every minute," kind of guy, who figures out how to convince you to buy a rock on a string and be happy about it -- when what you really need is a multi-million-dollar weather satellite and a weatherman to interpret the readings. Did the salesman rip you off? Well, maybe... but you couldn't afford that satellite anyway, so who cares? And surely it's a very nice rock, right? And it's visibly wet when it's raining, and it's swaying when it's windy... (Sorry... was that too far off the rails? Let me just get us back on track, here... 😉)

The thing you have to keep in mind is, you and I are not necessarily the primary target audience -- nor, really, are any of the other die-hard fans in this voluminous thread of largely enthusiastic repeat customers. Sure, Apple loves us upgraders... but really, we're already their customers, subscribing to their various services and buying stuff in their app store... and they'll get us to upgrade our hardware eventually anyway. You also mentioned the shareholders, and yeah, they're certainly another part of it... but more than that, I think it's the Android hefting onlookers that Tim is really targeting. The potential "switchers."

Specifically, they're the ones who have been watching Apple's keynotes with growing interest, but for whatever reason haven't yet bought their first bit of Apple kit. Perhaps we could characterize them as still kind'a hovering just outside of the "Reality Distortion Field" just waiting for Apple to announce that one feature that finally convinces them to take the plunge. And they might finally get their killer feature... but if anything else in the presentation doesn't quite sound up-to-par, maybe they'll walk instead of being sucked in.

So yeah: Tim's role in those presentations is to make it all sound amazing... even when the reality is, the majority of the presentation is about small, incremental changes.

Also, as an aside: yes, you actually can paint Jobs with much the same brush. In truth, he's the one who was originally credited with an unparalleled ability to create the RDF... Tim is great at a lot of things -- but really, at this, he's only an adequate imitator following in Steve's very large footsteps. Sometime when you have a few minutes, go watch the original iPhone announcement... and maybe it's just me being nostalgic, but I would encourage you to actually watch the entire thing. There has never been a better showman than Steve when he was in his element.

Yes and I’m upgrading my wife’s phone too. I’m tired of multiple chargers. I want everything USB-C. Also the action button to make camera access even quicker would be great!
Isn’t there literally a camera button on the Lock Screen?

All good points.

I've been on the opposite side of that Android-but-considering-Apple market. There was a time when I was getting disillusioned with Apple and watching the Android market, particularly Samsung, quite closely with a view to switching. I might well have switched but it was partly laziness that stopped me switching for long enough for Apple to address the big thing that was making me consider jumping ship.

And that big thing? It was nothing to do with any killer feature and was an issue (for me) that Apple resolved by what many on these forums might consider boring "nothing new, where's the innovation" incremental improvements in one single area and that alone kept me with Apple.

At one time Samsung was running what I thought were quite well constructed attack ads against Apple focussing specifically on battery life and showing iPhone users in public places like airports and coffee shops all huddled round power points trying to get charge into their phones. It was an exaggeration of course but there was some truth in the criticism. At the time iPhones (there was only one model in the line up in those days; hard to imagine that now!) did tend to have mediocre battery life and even worse there were some years when battery life even got worse e.g. when Apple introduced the haptic engine and had to reduce battery size year-on-year to make space for it. That's when I seriously considered switching to Android but now after quite a few years of mostly moving forward with battery life, one year with a dramatic leap forward where the battery life alone was the reason I upgraded, I'm happy to stay with iPhone. If I did ever move I think it's FaceID that I would miss the most.

Re the topic of this thread I'll almost certainly be upgrading my 14 Pro Max to the 15 Pro Max. From all the rumours so far (more efficient SoC, more efficient Qualcomm modem, ~12% increase in battery capacity, other general efficiency improvements) I think this might be another year where battery life takes a pretty big leap forward, hopefully more than the rumoured ~12% increase in battery capacity might imply due to those other improvements.

If we are looking at closer to a 20% increase in battery life vs last year then I would upgrade in a heartbeat based on that alone but this year I think the decision is going to be particularly easy because the periscope zoom lens will also be a fairly big draw for me and titanium chassis and USB-C charging definitely nice added bonuses on top.

All in all I'm really excited about the 12th September event. I think this might be the best iPhone they've ever built :)

It’s 2023, nearly 2024, and Apple is still selling a $800 phone with a 60hz display.

I'm planning to upgrade this year. I'm not sure which model yet, but am quite excited about it.
My Jet Black 7 Plus has been amazing and is still in great condition, but I think it's finally time...
I liked what I could do with the camera on the 7 but the upgrade to the 12Pro was amazing in that respect. I'm sure either the 14 or the 15 would impress.

I know it’s early to ask this question, but I am interested to see what everyone is planning on so far. Some people upgrade every year, some people might be holding on to a much older iPhone but are holding out to finally upgrade this generation, or maybe there’s a specific feature some people have been waiting on.

Rumored features (some may be Pro-only):
  • USB-C
  • Action button replacing mute switch
  • Periscope camera lens (5-6x zoom) on Pro Max model
  • A17 - First 3nm Apple chip
  • 6GB RAM, possibly 8GB on higher storage models
  • WiFi 6E
  • Qualcomm X70 modem
  • Titanium frame with more rounded edges
  • Slightly smaller body with same screen size
  • Smallest bezels of any phone
  • Red or blue color
  • Higher price
  • Qi2 wireless charging standard
  • Dynamic Island on all devices
  • Increased battery life
    • Bigger battery sizes
    • More efficient LiDAR scanner
    • More efficient display driver
    • A17 Chip - up to 30% more efficient (already listed above)
    • Qualcomm X70 - more efficient (already listed above)
On the other end, iPhone upgrades have never been so incremental, and it’s financially and environmentally smarter to hold on to your perfectly functioning iPhone now.

So, as of right now, are you planning on upgrading to the iPhone 15 series? Why or why not?

Edited 8/14/2023 due to updated rumor
No way, not with the quoted price rises. Given that iPhone sales have slowed, do they think that jacking the price by $/£200 for the pro max for example, is wise? Madness.

Also, why is the £ amount more than $, making it even more expensive when converted to $? Do they consider the Uk a rich country? It’s actually getting poorer by the day.

If I were you, at this point I would just hold on to the 13P. You can probably get a good value for the phone right now depending on where in the US you live. I still see a few 13P going for 700+ in mint condition around me but I am sure that will drop or not sell in the next upcoming weeks for the same price. What I do hope, based on some reports, is that carriers release BIG savings for trade-in options. I am sure you can get a good value with your carrier to trade the phone in.
That's the most likely scenario mostly because of the shuffle required with Verizon... and not wanting to be stuck with an extra phone. Thanks!

I am from 12P to 15PM. Blue or Silver/Gray. Black doesn’t look as dark as I thought it would be so that might be an option for me as well just have to wait-and-see on September 12 when the YouTubers handle them to get a better idea. Trading in my 12P while it still has value and if the 16 is a significant update, I will trade in the 15PM.

Depending on what the iPhone 15 comes with - I am looking at getting rid of my 13 Pro Max which has worked flawlessly and in perfect condition. However I want a phone that is slightly smaller.....
