I bought every iPhone since the first one. Always pre-ordered (since there are different sizes I always had the plus or max version).
But I'm acutally thinking about skipping that year for the first time. Right now I own the Xs Max which works well.
A month ago I bought the OnePlus 7 Pro (I always carry 2 phone, one business, one personal) and it blew me away. It's absolutely great.
But still, I love Apple and iOS, so I hope that we get a surprise announcement like a 90hz display (which is insane on the OnePlus) or a in-display fingerprint or whatever. But not just the camera update. Then I would consider buying the new one.

The only benefit to the pre-ordering time, is depending on the time zone that you’re actually living in. For me, it works out perfectly, because it’s not too late or too early in the morning, but for others, they literally have to wake up early morning (3 AM as an example), then try to go back to sleep before they have to wake up again for work.

I hate the 3am preordering time, but I usually take off that day in case I have trouble falling back to sleep. This year I’m definitely going to follow the preorder thread and watch the reviews on this year’s release.

I've had every iPhone except iPhone 5, 6s, 8, X. I expect to add XI to that list as time goes on.

I’ll also be adding the XI to the list as well. I even avoided upgrading to the iOS 13 public beta, so that my XS Max will feel like a new phone. Along with a new screen protector and case, things should go smoothly. I held onto my X for 18 months before upgrading. The only thing I didn’t like was when I upgraded the battery in my X during that special Apple had, they gave me a refurbished unit instead of replacing the battery in the unit I originally had.

Depends on where you live. 5G is fairly unique in that the actual infrastructure is so far behind in a number of countries.

Vodafone and Telekom are starting with 5G these days. Not many cities at the moment. But next year - when I will buy a new phone - there should be enough to make it a usefull option for my plan.

Just read this article about 2019 iPhone XI missing out on camera feature.
The only benefit that I could think of in iPhone XI is having a Qualcomm modem and better reception than my XS Max Intel modem. But the cellular service is tolerable for now, so Yes I will skip this year’s iPhone notwithstanding the better modem and the hideous square triple camera.

All 2019 phones will have Intel modems.

I came from the iPhone 6 and have the X. I will skip 2019, because I do not like nore need these camera features they try to market as innovation. The iPhone could be easily innovated, but because of licensing and cost, Apple has no interest in doing so.

Increasingly tempting to skip because my jailbroken XR is butter and the rear camera thing on 11/11r looks hideous

But I also have a large gift card on standby, and I am generally weak to this sorta thing... and not much else on the horizon id be interested in set on my tablets and watch

Part of me would love to skip 2019 and have the gift card pay for a sizable chunk of a new keyboard MacBook of some kind if Apple gets
It together in the next year as rumored

I might. I have an iPhone X, which is still working very well and the only thing I actually need is dual sim support as my living circumstances are changing but I think before I spent another £1200 I might just use my Pixel 3a alongside my iPhone instead. I could pick up a Xs as it will be cheaper but even then I might as well wait. Another option could be the 2019 XR but then it depends on the difference in camera quality.

That article does reinforce my feelings. I'm not so fussed about the notch but having watched the MKBHD hands on with the dummy 2019 model I couldn't help but feel underwhelmed.

So disappointed with the leaks for this year, verging on anger towards Apple.

This is supposed to be a significant design upgrade year, instead it's just that ugly three-camera bump on the back.

I've had an SE for a couple of years, and thought as 2018 was the 'S' variant year that I would hold off and wait until this year for something more significant.

Now I'm wondering whether 2020 is going to be even less significant - they'll likely just stick with the three-camera/X design and the major difference will just be 5G.

Almost certainly. In our family we have last years XS Max and 6s+ with a new battery. Need to amortize the XS Max over the next 6 years and the 6S+ for another 4 years at least...

I will consider XR update if it offers higher ppi HDR screen (at least 1080p or higher like 8plus) and USB-C and possibly TouchID instead of/in addition to FaceID. Other than that for a lower price, I would be happy with LCD screen.

Probably won’t skip— I’m in the iUP and lately I’ve been feeling like the XS Max isn’t really worth the high premium for me personally, so whatever the XR’s successor is, I will be looking closely at that.

Well for one, if you’re disappointed in leaks, then the only thing that’s really leaked has been the ‘logic board and triple lens camera’ module, and that angers you? So what are you expecting the iPhone should offer this year that would be drastically different over last year? If it was me, I would never let a tech device have control over me where it ‘angers’ me. That sounds rather sophomoric.

This is supposed to be a significant design upgrade year, instead it's just that ugly three-camera bump on the back..

No, it’s not. A design upgrade? The iPhone just was re-designed in 2017 [So a matter of two years], introducing the Max in 2018. Smart phone designs aren’t geared towards having ‘significant upgrades’ every year, and the triple lens camera could be a significant upgrade in terms of what it can offer. So you seem to be more focused on aesthetics than you actually do the core functionality, I’d rather see what this triple lens camera can offer, and it doesn’t bother me how it looks, because it’s on the back my iPhone and consumers use cases anyways.

I literally just purchased my 2nd SE online, brand new in box. My current 16gb’s screen is starting to come away. It’s time... time for the same phone. It really is such a great device. Excellent battery life and camera, Touch ID, headphone jack. None of the modern bells and whistles, but, if the rumours are true, the 5.4” is the phone for me to hold out for. I love the smaller form factor.

My 2nd SE is 64gb, a nice upgrade - I’ve always put up with a rather limiting 16gb on my iPhones. And at only $175, it’s all of the iPhone for almost a 10th of the current day price. I’m so happy. iOS13 as well.

My plan right now is to stick with my XR. It’ll be the first time in the history of iPhones that I won’t upgrade.

That being said, if the look were to change noticeably in some way (much smaller notch for instance), I might consider it. The camera setup turns me off, so something else would have to be aesthetically very pleasing to compensate. And yes, I realize it’s gonna be a lot better camera, but I LOVE my tiny camera lens on my XR, and the pics it takes are just fine.

One other thing is if it looks like all the phones in 2020 will have OLED or 5G, I may go ahead and buy this year, knowing I likely wouldn’t buy next. I need to hold on to LCD as long as possible, and I’m not really ready for 5G either.

....my past years iPhones:

iPhone 3G
iPhone 4G
iPhone 5
iPhone 6
iPhone 7
iPhone 8 Plus (iPhone Upgrade Program)
Current phone: iPhone XS (iPhone Upgrade Program)

And, in answer to the OP's question - yea, I will indeed be skipping the 2019 iPhones as happy with my XS until next year....

I posted once before a few pages back, but have been increasingly debating replacing my 6 and buying an XR now vs waiting until September......(wonder if the price cut will be worth the wait?)

What was I expecting? 5G, a redesigned phone body (something along the lines of the squarer body design of the newer iPad Pros), USB-C, notchless front panel. I don't think all of that was too much to expect or ask for considering all of Apple's competitors have one or more of those things in their 2019 phones. Instead it looks like all we're getting is upgraded internals and an ugly rear camera system. I didn't say it angered me, I said my disappointment was verging on anger.

As for the phone being re-designed in 2017 - Apple has pretty much always introduced a new design every two years apart from the 7 and 8 being similar (iPhone 3G - 2008, 4 - 2010, 5 - 2012, 6 - 2014, X - 2017), so 2019 was the year for a new design.

Come on man, it's not hard to see why people are disappointed with the leaks this year. You say "the only things that have really leaked" like Apple is hiding major features - we know that's not going to happen. No I'm not all about the aesthetic appeal but it is important (to me - I either dont use a case or have a clear one), and the three lens back looks ugly - personally I don't care about a camera upgrade as for my needs (and for most people's needs) the current camera is more than capable. However, I'd swap a design change if it had considerable new worthwhile additions like 5G but according to leaks we're not even getting that.

You might not be too bothered about what looks like a minor upgrade this year, but there are plenty of people including myself that have waited since 2017 to upgrade that thought Apple would be sticking to their usual 2 year cycle who are very disappointed by what we appear to be getting.

I have no issue with any of your expectations - except for 5G. No way it's ready for prime time, and it's certainly not widely available as a network infrastructure at this time.

I'm good with the current body style... and I truly don't even notice the notch... the camera bump seems to grow each year... why not just make it a bit thicker to handle the camera system and be done with it?

Not everyone is disappointed. Particularly everyone that likes the current designs are elated. In fact sales would say otherwise.

Are you saying iPhone 11 will not sell because of your specific disappointment or unmanageable expectations. Because I don’t see that happening.

I have an Xs Max and will decide in September if I’m going to upgrade or not, but so far I really like what I’m seeing.

Btw 5g isn’t ready, everyone that bought a beta 5g phone this year will have to have it replaced in a year. If they hold onto it for that long.
