Does anyone know if going through the Apple Store app but using AT&T financing will do anything different than selecting the upgrade option from AT&T directly? I don't really want to pre-order from AT&T but I'm planning to do an installment plan for the 12 Pro Max and I assume the option to "upgrade my device" is tied to my AT&T account regardless.

I went through the process today except NOT for my device that is already on installments with AT&T and will need to be traded in. I did it for another line that is not being traded in.

It was pretty similar to years past and included the same options that would be presented by AT&T, like the $5+ option for Next Up.

I'm pretty confident now that upgrading mine through Apple with AT&T Next will be just as smooth as in the past.

This is helpful, thank you! I assumed as much. It was similar with my XS Max and I prefer going through Apple for phone purchases/upgrades like this.

Should be seamless so I have my config saved in my favorites and I'll pull the trigger on 11/6.

Got my 11pro last year one day early. From ATT. The Apple store had too many glitches.

I don't think anyone on AT&T got 10/23. Some people are posting but ordered on Apple.com. I'd be surprised if they did not deliver on 23rd. But given the limited trade in deal, I wanted to do it all at the source so they confirmed my pricing $6/mo and will ship what I need for trade in.
My order was through att.com with a 10/23 delivery date. I just got a regular 12 though, not the Pro.

Ordered a iPhone 12 128GB Green on ATT with a delivery date of 10/23. First time I haven't purchased a flagship iPhone in 10 years but I'm definitely looking forward to the new phone.

The main issue was that AT&T had a lot of issues with cancelling customer orders and over-selling, so I'd rather deal with Apple directly this time around. I'm glad you had a good experience though!

I apologize if this has been asked before, but there's no difference in buying a sim-free phone and a paid-in-full AT&T phone, is there? I'm not doing installments or upgrading my line, just wanted to purchase the phone outright. Since paying in full, the phone should be unlocked, and the only difference would be that it comes with an AT&T ready sim card.

Am I correct with these assumptions or am I missing something?

Same thing. They will both be unlocked if you pay in full.

Annoyed w/Apple & AT&T.

I did the pre-order process on the mobile Apple store app yesterday to get ready for ordering this morning. Specifically chose the SIM free version phone but then when I put in my carrier information it got changed to an AT&T version and no way to change the pre-order selection either before or during the order process this morning.

So it says I have the AT&T version now and I assume it will be locked to AT&T. I chose the Apple upgrade plan for payment.

How big of a hassle is it going to be to change this AT&T locked phone to a SIM free phone after I receive it?

My wife and I have talked of switching carriers and I don't want a hassle or limitation if/when I do that.

For the record: I've ordered from ATT.com dozens of times for phones over the past few years. Every single time when it's shown a date range, they've shipped earlier than the first date. Every time. I wouldn't worry about the date showing later.
I hope youre right. I got in at 4:58am PT and got November 9-16. I’m sad right now. Otherwise process was smooth.

I ordered phone on AT&T using my wife's upgrade but she is going to take my phone. Do I just swap the SIM before I turn it on for the first time? I assume I need to wipe my current phone that she will then be using. Anyone have experience with this?

If I cancel my AT&T order, should I be able to order through Apple right away? Or does it take time to fix things?

I got the same date range and I ordered at 4:45 PT. I always order through AT&T and I have always got it on launch day. I wouldn’t trust the dates given on the initial email.

You're fine - don't stress. Any phone sold under the Apple upgrade plan is unlocked. It is just using your AT&T info in order to activate the phone for you properly (you'll use the SIM card that comes in the new phone and not your old one.)

From apple's website on apple upgrade program: "And if you ever decide to switch carriers after you activate your iPhone with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, or Verizon, you can easily do that, too."

Thanks for that information!

Is the hardware of the handset the same, the handset I'm getting can also be used "sim free" with a carrier that supports that?
