Couple of ways to get full-screen on iPod

I agree. I have ripped plenty of DVD (widescreen) movies to my iPod over the last week or so and they look kind of silly. All they are is a small strip along an already small screen. Do I like it? Yes, but if I had the option to rip someone's full-screen version instead, I would.

First, at the Apple store, I've seen wide-screen content on the iPod and it can be viewed as full-screen just by changing the iPod's video settings.

Second, you can also crop your encoding in Handbrake if that's what you're using to encode your videos.

I know these solutions don't solve the focus issue that pan & scan tries to address on pro-videos for 3x4 video, but they should at least fix the "small strip" problem.

This is a great upgrade from the slim pickins with Thats so Raven.... Conan is hilarious. I heard Monk is great too but I haven't given it a chance

Monk is one of my favorite TV shows. Now I have an alternative to buying a season at a time on DVD or watching for reruns.

For those of you who don't know, it's a USA Network cable show about Adrian Monk, a brilliant but obsessive compulsive detective. Mr. Monk is my hero. Oops, hold on while I straighten the edges of the magazines on my coffee table; the edges aren't all parallel. OK, I'm back. Yes, Mr. Monk is a great show.

The other great USA Network show is missing from iTMS so far: The Dead Zone. I hope that will be added next.

On a side note, we Canadians did get an exclusive live Tragically Hip album today. :) It's available in stores as a DVD, but iTunes is the only place you can buy just the audio. I can't stand watching concerts, so I for one am most happy.

David

yeah I did notice that, in fact I bought a track off of it despite the fact i already own the DVD :D

Why are people so upset with the "insane" prices for Conan and Jay. I don't watch either show, but $2 for 6 min sounds like what you would pay for a Pixar short or for a 3 min music video. To be honest, 90% of those shows are crap anyway, so if they are giving you the real highlights, maybe you are better off.

I figure people charge what they think the market will bear. The thing with selling the entire show is that there are a lot of silly fans that will pay whatever it takes to get an appearance by their "hero." You don't think Letterman could charge $20 for the Oprah episode?

OMG! Apple added Monk! This has made my day. Now I wish they would add The 4400, Angel, definitely the Tick and the Dead Zone. Stargate would be awesome, since for some strange reason the Scifi channel won't show up on Comcast even though I am paying the bastards for it.

It would also be cool if Apple started offering some Anime in its movie section.

Keep it coming Apple!

I don't know guys i don't like this ipod pricing thing. I love the idea of vintage shows and pilots, stuff you don't see often. But they charge 1.99 for 6 minute conan clip and 9.99 for an hr special you can probably buy on dvd for the same price. And the format you get it in is only for you iPod so you can't watch it on anything else. It should be subscription based for shows. I pay .99 for a song, but i'll listen to that song 200 time, the tv show, not so much, so why should i pay twice as much for something i'll use 1/100 of the time, and unlike music i can only watch in on my ipod without quality loss.

LAME.

Mind you i'm not against portable video, its a great idea, and there is a market for it. but the implimentation of this idea sux. The PVP can storge a weeks worth of video but you can only watch one thing befor the battery dies, and its too expensive. I say wait a couple years. I'd rather join netflix and rent stuff and rip them and create two files, one on dvd and one for the ipod. Than buy the same thing 3 times, ipod, psp, dvd. Ridiculous.

just tried logging in to the store, it told me it was busy....weird...
I got the same message last night when I tried to get on to the US music store after seeing the article on Thinksecret... Does it mean that there are really that many people downloading vidoes from the music store????

For people who need there shows right now its cool. But Getting the dvd of the season is still cheaper, correct? Plus you get all that bonus stuff on dvds.

Bring on the Twilight Zone, Simpsons, Seinfeld. That'd be neeto.

The Twilight Zone would be especially nice--but how about Night Gallery, so that I can get the rest of my Rod Serling fix?

Hogan's Heroes
M*A*S*H

Some British comedy--Monty Python's Flying Circus and perhaps Rowan Atkinson as Black Adder.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent (at least the D'Onofrio episodes--I've almost perfected my emulation of his trademark head cocking and getting-in-peoples'-faces)

:D

GALACTICA!!!! I wish the miniseries was a bit cheaper, but hey this works.

I'm surprised they added NBC but did not add "My Name is Earl"

Anyways, I think I may buy Pagasus (BSG) for a try at these tv shows on iTMS.

Hands down I would say that if Apple could score Fox and Arrested Development - that would be fantastic! (and hopefully save the show in the process!) You CANNOT watch AD one time and possibly get every joke. I can watch the same show over and over, especially since they have only aired a few this season anyways. Throw in the "Simpson's" and "Family Guy" and they will dominate!
--
This is why they cannont charge less than 1.99 per episode - they wouldn't be able to keep up and the networks would make so much money they would probably retire.

Battlestar Galactica! Firefly on the way?

I missed the 3rd-to-last BSG episode this fall, and so I didn't want to watch the other two. They'll come out on Netflix just before the spring season, so I can probably wait. But if I'd had iTunes to begin with, I would have just bought the one I missed, and never gotten off track. Worth $1.99 to me, even if it's not DVD quality, and even though I don't have a video iPod. I can buy the DVDs later when I want ALL the episodes. Just let me catch up one one or two with no waiting.

That's my ONLY interest in iTunes video downloads at this point--I would never be a regular buyer, when DVDs give you bulk episodes at better quality and lower cost--but for an episode here and there it IS a great option. And the new BSG is the only current series I really follow.

So say we all!

(Some weirdness, though. Sometimes some of the three "seasons" get marked as partial seasons when they're actually all complete. And the "season zero" Miniseries is overpriced--and only available as a whole. Way to recruit new fans, Sci Fi! And searching for 'battlestar galactica' at iTunes turns up some old TV soundtracks but no video. It's on the home page though.)

If you want to reach me, NBC, get me all the episodes of The West Wing

TV is a real funny business.

Don't expect to see "Earl" or "West Wing" any day soon, as these shows are produced by Fox and Warner respectively, even though they air on NBC. So NBC/Universal can't simply sell them through iTMS, and Fox/Warner are also probably limited in their distribution of the shows though iTMS at least until they become available on DVD.

The shows we will see first are the ones that are controlled entirely by one company.

Ummm Conan sucks, what happened to the Apprentice shows people??? Oh well at least they got the Office, I can catch up on that.

Hmmm. Hates Conan, but likes Apprentice? Something is not right here....

Anyway I can't beleive that people would pay for these shows. You can get much better quaility and much better selection using a P2P client. And over the air broadcasts are legal AFAIK, just not DVD rips. It just makes no sense to me?

I completely agree. Bandwith is cheap enough for them to give users the option of high-quality downloads. There's just a laziness there of getting away with the bare minimum; but kudos to them for at least getting this thing started. The rest of TV and movie land is hopelessly behind the times, having not taken advantage of internet downloads yet.
The low resolution has nothing to do with bandwidth. It's about the content companies not wanting iTunes to eat into their DVD sales. So if you want the convenience of iTunes and don't mind the resolution, you go for iTMS. If you want high-quality, you're gonna have to go Amazon.

Also remember that Apple's primary objective is selling video iPods. I'm sure most of the $1.99 is going back to the content companies, as before. So they're going to tailor the resolution for the iPod (it makes it a much less of an impulse buy when you have to wait 30 min for a high-rez video to download). The new content legitimizes the video capabilities of the iPod much much more. And Apple gets to up the iTMS revenues a bit for the quarter.

I also would have liked to see The Apprentice offered as well. I've missed a few episodes lately (studying...bah).

And for the record, both Conan and The Apprentice are good.

wtf

i'm not one to trash apple... but this whole video ipod and video on iTMS seems retarded... hopefully it'll all come together in january with a dvr... but until then i can't see why somebody would want to spend 1.99 on a 30 min show to watch on a 2" ipod screen. i guess some people have too much time and money on their hands

i can see what your saying - but it will all tie in when apple ship the mac mini with front row - the ipod is not realy that good for watching feature length films on due to batt life but is ideal with small TV shows and Music videos.

$1.99 is not too bad for a 30 min or more often 44min show when a song will cost you $0.99 that lasts 4 min -

it only gets bad when your not in the US of A , like the UK who have to pay £1.79 which = $3.29
