I think Apple is aware of the issue and they working on solutions right know, wouldn‘t surprise me, when the issue is quietly resolved with new manufacturing and strengthen of the internal frame early 2019. apple will be called out once again by early adaptors, but at the end nobody cares.

I can guarantee they are well aware of the ‘Bending’ issue. Apple has ‘Eyes and Ears’ in *all* tech related news. Regardless, I mentioned it before, they won’t be able address the manufacturing concerned right now, because that would require them to make a new casing and any internal improvements necessary with a stronger aluminum, but I am sure that they will improve the rigidity with the aluminum in someway in the future.

Did this happen with the iPhone 6?

No. The fix was implemented in the 6s.
Yeah, I know the 6S was improved with 7000-series aluminium. I don't think the current Pro design can be strengthened unless they switch to this type.

I checked the Apple online store and can see that there still is 2 weeks delivery on the new iPads. Could be a sign that Apple is struggling to achieve an acceptable yield in the factories. So what we are seeing now are units with more defects than normal. I even returned a 11" unit myself because the display glass was littered with impurities.

I think we need to just accept that the current Pro design is very fragile. QC might improve a somewhat over time, but I don't expect miracles.

Yes, and I bet they are especially hard-wired into the MacRumors and 9to5Mac forums. The feedback we post on these sites is worth its weight in gold to the Apple QC people.

just checked my 12.9" and it shows the same bending.. already sold my MBP 13" so there is no going back to that. Dont know if I should return it and order a new one or stick with it :-(

Does anyone own a 2018 LTE iPad Pro that is not slightly bent as pictured above? Usually these threads include many users who say that their devices aren't affected. If you've confirmed (via flat item or flat surface) that your device isn't bent or crooked, please report back here (with pics if you can).

I think that it would be helpful to other users to know that this is 'just how they are', or isolated cases. I am receiving my second 11" tonight, and will be going to the Apple Store today (since it's right across the street from my work building) to see how the display units look (both LTE and WiFi only models).

my LTE iPad is still perfect, I throw it in my backpack everyday and don't think about it

That's good to hear!

Did you confirm by comparing it to flat surface/Apple Pencil? Mine appeared to be perfect too, until I looked a bit closer, then finally placed the Apple Pencil alongside the bottom and confirmed that it was indeed a bit crooked/bent (out of the box, from the factory).

This is not about not caring about this issue, or about it bending in a backpack, this appears to be a factory assembly issue and just want to confirm that it doesn't affect all of them.

No issues here

12.9 LTE

Looks perfectly normal

We want them thin.
We want them light.
We want them durable.

We can’t have it all ways.

I agree.

The solution here is for Apple to make them light and durable. Frankly they were already thin enough 4 years ago! It’s the WEIGHT you notice beyond that point; not thickness. Honestly, without a caliper you would have a hard time noticing 1mm difference in a tablet.

By not forcing this “thinner at all cost” priority, they could also return several features the majority of iPad owners prefer:
- headphone jack
- delete camera bump
- larger battery (maybe...dependent on more modern battery tech that is lighter)

It’s OK if there is some empty space inside. Nobody will care if it’s stronger and returns features.

By the way; this isn’t the first time Apple has made this mistake. Google the “PowerBook G4 Titanium”. It was the worst laptop Apple ever made for durability. I bought one new ($3500) and supported a team of developers that all used them. The casing would bend and short out the motherboard. The hinges would crack and fall off in pieces. Their next generation laptop was thicker and vastly more durable; and nobody cared about the thickness increase.

I'd like to see comparisons to the 10.5. My 12.9 looked a little bent too, but then I took at look at my 10.5 and it seemed the same. But I wasn't that thorough - I am out of the return period and would not be thrilled to regret it.

Here's a photo of mine. I used my Apple Pencil to show how bent it actually is. The pencil is flush against the straight (middle) part of the iPad, and as you can see, it slowly starts to bend left (enough to create a gap between the pencil and the iPad - a gap big enough to reveal the protruding camera nub on the other side of the iPad at this angle - something the pencil should be hiding).

Btw, one thing to keep in mind is that the Apple Pencil might not be completely straight. At least my new pencil is somewhat bend, but I think it might even be by design to allow the middle part to be as close to the magnetic charging connector as possible.

I could take exactly similar looking photo with my new 12,9” pro + pencil even though the ipad itself is perfectly straight.

Just something to keep in mind! if you need to measure, make sure the measuring device is 100% straight.

Mine isn't bent either, but I do believe that you are correct and a lot of these are being shipped bent from the factory for some reason.

A few grams of specifically-shaped aluminum support pieces was all this device needed to not bend. For a (near) trillion dollar company, and with the price of these devices, this lack of basic design engineering almost seems purposeful.

It’s certainly an issue but not like it can be fixed with a software update by time it gets fixed how many would bother to get a new one when there’s no lock it wouldn’t Be the same issue,

Question is would anybody of checked if this report wasn’t out? Is it noticeable? If it is then fair enough but most i’m Sure wouldn’t notice.

I've been waiting for the 2018 refresh of the ipad pro, I expect it'll work beautifully for me, but it's looking apparent that apple has gone too far in their quest to make the device super thin. I actually like thicker and sturdier devices (but I still want the ultra fast A12X).

I'm in the process of designing a "brace" for the ipad pro 12.9" to give it more structural integrity and prevent it from bending. What I currently have in mind is a thin plate of stainless steel or titanium placed on the back of the ipad, and held in place by brackets on the sides of the device. I'm also toying with the idea of incorporating a more ergonomic way of holding the device (something like handles on the side).

The brace would add some thickness to the device (the plate itself is 1.5mm) and some weight. Stainless steel would be noticeable in the hand, but titanium could be a good compromise.

I'm curious about whether this idea resonates with anyone else on the forum. As always with hardware projects, the per-unit cost goes down with the number of units. Would anyone be interested in this "bend-proof" solution, and what would be your requirements ?

We shouldn’t be purchasing a product that will bend from normal use or being in something like backpack. What is the point if apple makes it so thin that we need large case like otterbox defender so does bend. What kind of user experience is that.
Has Apple took any official stance on this? Are they saying bending is normal or abuse and they are not responsible. Apple would replace bent iPads in past.
