I don’t know about y’all but if I’m buying an iPad that has a high price tag like this, I wouldn’t want even the slightest bend on it. Also needs strong material and durability. I’ll complain all I want if I forked over $1,000+ for it. That’s 1/4 of what I owe on my car.

I would eventually return it and go back to the 10.5. Bezels aren’t much bigger than the 11”.

LCD is the same, minus the rounded edges. “Liquid Retina” is purely a marketing scam and I’m not surprised people fall for it.

Correct. If the product is bent out of the box, you return it. Similar to what you would do with any product ever created that isn't supposed to be bent.

While not everyone would continue to use the device knowing they will return it this is perfectly ok with Apple and is one of the reasons customers get an extended return period over the Christmas time.

Apple encourages customers to buy and try in their stores as well. I guess that strategy has worked out so far.

He may as well continue to use it. A refurb is a refurb and an Apple device is a refurb once it leaves the store even if returned unopened. Apple's generous return policy is one of the reasons why we pay the Apple tax.

How I see the issue of durability on the latest Ipad is not a issue solely related to a accidental mistake in design but a intentional choice between cheaper less durable design against more expensive but stronger internal structure of which Apple chose the former.

I have been reading the excellent book ”
Transforming NOKIA: The Power of Paranoid Optimism to Lead Through Colossal Change” which is written by Risto Siilasmaa and it brought me back memories of what happened to Nokia.

While Apple still shows excellent profit margins and business is running well it is difficult to ignore some of the quality related problems being reported lately. Including Ipad pro 10.5 white spot and issues with Ipad 11 durability. Seeing that these issues are not only limited to Ipad’s it makes me wonder if Apple is on the same way with Nokia cutting costs on every possible bit of their products.

The question we have to ask is if and when this starts to show in customer loyalty and if customers care. Here in Europe the Asian manufacturers such as Huawei are introducing great products at affordable prices and to be honest the only problem with them is the Android and lack of future software support.

If this were simply a new issue, I may agree, but this has been going on forever. In manufacturing, there will always be some level of quality issues. I had no issues with either of the products you mentioned and the bulk of manufacturing issues seem to be affecting the 12.9 LTE model. This isn't new and if you have a problem with your device, you return it.

This is so true. I returned the 11” and bought a 10.5” and it is really great. Curved aluminum for strength and square screen for information density. My apps are working better.

In addition to the structural issues; I am still shaking my head that Apple got rid of the headphone jack and apparently didn’t thoroughly test their USB-C audio workaround dongle. The USB-C bus is just broken on the new iPad.

What a mess. I’m very disappointed, but also relieved the 10.5 exists and is honestly comparable or better in most features.

Can you say more about the USB-C dongle?

Interesting point. How many other electronic products do you know of that were bent right out of the box?

This iPad Pro controversy is still going on?

I guess you could pretend it doesn't exist...

You're getting cutting edge, next-generation bendable display technology.. it's the first foldable tablet before the first major foldable phone comes out in 2019.. look at it that way.

I hear about it every year with almost every iPhone or iPad, but I’ve never experienced it myself. I don’t doubt that it’s occuring at all, it’s just nothing new. You return your product if it’s fault for any reason, Apple is usually very good with that, and you move on.

I agree, but my point is I have never heard of another product arriving bent right out of the box. I would think the box itself would protect the product from damage. Sure we can all move on and not make a big deal out of it, but still the very idea that a packaged product is bent before even being used, makes one wonder how that could even occur.

I would hazard a guess the primary reason there is an extended return period over the holidays is so 'Santa' can hide it until Christmas Day and THEN the lucky receiver first starts to play with it... not quite so much so that someone can start using it while in the post turkey glow of thanksgiving LOL...and decide more than a month later to return it.. just saying.

Educated Guess: The iPad casing is already damaged _prior_ to being In the box. The aluminum casing, which must be a rather large number of pre-manufactured units was somehow bent during the manufacturing process, and then put in the box. Apple’s boxes are very good and well constructed, which leads me to believe the bending is before the final packaging stages.

Wouldn’t be too surprising after seeing all those MBPs with the scratch just below the left speaker grill. Don’t know if this affects 2018 MBPs but it affected 2016 and 2017 models.

Yea I am not sure, but it seems to be concentrated to 12.9 LTE models, something with the bands. Apple will address and fix moving forward. I agree that it's a bit concerning, but Apple service is great and they'll replace any iPad's that have issues.

You won’t find any product there doesn’t have some issue and when there is one people will find one.

Sure thing. Everything has a weak spot somewhere and everyone knows that. That however does in no way excuse or distract from bad manufacturing which is what seems to happen here.

No one is bending my ipad, not the russian dude, not the jerry rigged dude. I had a 1.5mm stainless steel plate cut along with some machined aluminum braces. looks nice and industrial, adds some weight to the ipad but I have no fear of leaving it in a backpack.

Looks like overkill, but kinda cool at the same time.

My only concern would be scratching the iPad with this unless you have some protection on the inside of the brackets.

the brackets do press against the bezels, but not excessively so, as they are machined to match the exact thickness of the ipad. Could some scratching occur ? possibly, but I think it'll be limited because the ipad is not rubbing against them.
