XP Compatibility mode is only used for people not actually running XP SP3 (mainly Vista or 7). Ignore mentions of compatibility mode if you're actually running XP SP3. You don't need it.

No he/she is on Vista but does not have the option for Compatibilty in XP sp3 only 2

Look at the screenshot on the other page.

He said he was running SP3 in that post.

Ah, whatever. Maybe my post will help somebody at some point.

I just had to install Vista on a spare Macbook. None of my VMs were seeing the phone properly. They all saw it as a camera but itunes couldn't connect. That was a pain. But after going through it all Blackra1n ran perfectly.

EDIT: I just checked that Vista install I just did and I don't see any SP3 setting either.

I'm sure he tested it, I like many 3G users are really freaking frustrated. Overly frustrated (heck thats probably an understatement at this point.) That there are so many issues and none of us seem to be able to jailbreak. Can you explain that one for me?

If you believe he tested it, why did you say that you didn't? I can understand being frustrated, but accusing someone who's done us all such a big service of lying is uncalled for. As for why it doesn't work on all 3Gs the first time - I have no idea. But I would point out that he wrote the thing all by himself in a couple of days with no beta period, and he only tested it on a single device. You can't really consider this even an alpha release. You have to expect some bugs.

Who are you to give him crap for running the jailbreak. It's HIS phone and if he doesn't want to unlock it he has no reason to stop himself from running this jailbreak.

He can do what he wants with his iPhone and you can do what you want with yours. It's attitudes like yours on here that keep people from asking questions etc afraid of getting crap because they did something different or asked for help due to a mistake. Stop being a troll

Damn.

Did I f*** ing say he can't do anything he wants with his phone. You his mother? Man you need to chill.

Personally I think it's a good warning to people who are thinking about what he did without being unaware of the consequences.

Oh I understood that they were on vista guess I missed that post, what did you do on vista for it to work? I have tried everything and NOTHING I repeat NOTHING has worked.

I had to install iTunes for it to run properly. Then I made sure it showed up in iTunes and that Windows had installed the drivers. That's all. Easy compared to the VMs.

so JB pretty worthless at the moment backgrounder categories, SBsettings even CyDelete etc all need updates so if you haven't updated yet you might wait abit longer or if you are 3.0 and JB stay with it. ;)

I think this is exactly what I am going to do. ;) + I don't want to put any added strain on my Dell 6000.

I am waiting for PT for 3.1.2 (want to keep my baseband)

Also,no disrespect to GeoHot, but DevTeam would never release a tool with this many issues.

Also, if the Cydia apps need updates, I don't need to get in the middle of that.

I have loads of patience.

Cool. I originally jb with the Dev teams tools. I think I'll stick with them as well.

Waiting also gives the jb app developers time to update.

Question: I update, synch etc on my mac but have a windows machine. Could I update to 3.1.2 on my mac and then download and do the jailbreak from the windows side?
I only ask, cause I looked at the above directions linked and it looked like itunes had to be open or such?
Guess I could give it a go with my son's 2g :D

OK. So I didn't read the rest of the posts, but thought I would report back...

Updated son's 2G iPhone (he uses it as an itouch) to 3.1.2 on the Mac side. Rebooted into Vista and downloaded Blackra1n. At first, it wouldn't see the phone. So I installed itunes and it could now see the phone, but would get stuck with the USB connect to iTunes displayed on the the iPhone, DFU mode I think. Right clicked on the blackra1in exe and noticed that Vista was blocking it saying that it came from another computer. Unblocked the exe and reran it and it worked. Must say once I figured this out it was the easiest jailbreak ever... and it worked on my Mac synched iphone with no problem. I lost nothing.

So I installed Cydia and have been messing around while watching the RedSkins loose... The only programs I found useful so far where the SBSettings, tethering apps, and the bypass 3G restrictions. Though the tethering I would only use on mine/wife's 3G phones... Other then that, I see no real benefit of a jailbreak, unless someone else can point me to something I am just missing. Some of the full movie downloads looked cool though I must admit.

Back before the app store I ran jailbroke for a reason, but haven't messed with it since about a year ago... now I am not so sure. The only thing important seems to be tethering and they are charging for this it seems.

worked on windows 7 64bit ult just fine.. go figure cydia is all screwed up repos down and all wanky.

I'm still running 3.0 JB on my 3GS. Obviously I've wanted to do a clean restore for a while but have held off. I want to preserve the unlockable baseband but also want to upgrade and clean restore my phone. Anyway to upgrade to 3.1.2 with a clean restore without upgrading the baseband? Don't have a Mac to create custom firmware, only windows vista.

Anyone slagging geohot needs to CTFD. Its your decision to use the tool not his.

I have a 3G and yes I've had a right game JBing it - but thats my problem, not his.

I'm positive he tested it on a 3G, a 3GS etc and he got them all working before releasing it, I didn't have to use it but I did and I'm glad I did in the end - now I have the carrier logo back correctly and I can arrange my apps in itunes.

I can't get winterboard working but you know what? I actually quite like the stock look after not having it for a year, plus after having to set my phone up as new - its much quicker, like a new phone!

My advice - just keep trying. It does work.

Wow! You decided to give up on ability to unlock in the future (increase the value of your phone) so you could update to 3.1.2 now? Even if you don't need it unlocked, it doesn't seem wise. Should've used custom 3.1 to restore and wait for JB 3.1.2 from Dev team so can unlock if needed. Too late now

I have no need to unlock my phone. I love AT&T and never planned on changing to T-Mobile. I know that it might hurt the resale value on Craigslist a little, but I'm not worried about that.

Also, I been aware of all the consequences of jailbreaking ever since the very first jailbreak came out.

It worked perfectly for me on a 32GB 3GS using Windows XP SP2 (didn't have to do any compatibility changes).

since i'm using a macbook, can i jailbreak using my windows partition in VMware ?

or does anyone know if a mac solution is coming?

I was someone who had to try blackra1n several times to get it to work. It did work about the fifth time I tried.

I have iTunes 9 and Vista. I didn't try XP SP3 compatibility mode; perhaps that would have saved me from trying five times.

Not working for my 3GS guys.

Just keeps hanging at the USB -> iTunes thing on the iPhone screen.

Its my first JB, so if this happens to my 3GS, or rather anything happens and it gets struck somewhere in teh JBing process, can I just restore it using iTunes, right?? I mean there's a way to revert my fone back to its present state in case Blackra1n fails for me?

Wow, like all of you, I had a TON of problems getting it to work.

It finally just worked.

The difference in what I did?

Bonjour was off (not sure if that really made a difference, just saying) and the phone was connected to iTunes with iTunes open.

EVERY SINGLE DESCRIPTION kept saying to kill iTunes. The first time I did it with iTunes open, it worked flawlessly.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! If possible I would rather go to 3.0 again... now that the JB is out, somewhere should be procedures popping up to restore 3.0...

PDANet seems to use WiFi, which I would rather not use. Apples solution in 3.0 was much nicer of course. So, I am looking forward to a downgrade.

For those stuck here. Quit iTunesHelper process that runs in the background on Windows and Mac.
