since i'm using a macbook, can i jailbreak using my windows partition in VMware ?

or does anyone know if a mac solution is coming?

I have read in numerous forums that VMware and Parallels have not been able to jailbreak... Have to actually boot into windows for it to work.

crap! my touch has been on the apple logo screen for the past 10 mins.! s*** is it crapped?
EDIT: screen just flashed white and then went back to the apple logo.
EDIT: i just put intoDFU mode and it is restoring. gonna give it another shot.

No luck, keeps sticking at the USB cable -> iTunes icon on the iPhone screen...

QUESTION: I have an XP machine here beside me, think it's running SP2.

Can I jailbreak on that and then use the iPhone with my Vista laptop normally?

Or do you have to jailbreak with the machine you're going to be using the iPhone with?

Not working for my 3GS guys.

Just keeps hanging at the USB -> iTunes thing on the iPhone screen.

I keep having this problem too. I've already had to restore my phone twice now. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help us. :D

I believe can do it on the XP machine and then use it on Vista.

I have a Mac and borrowed my wife's Vista laptop, did the blackra1n jailbreak, then went back to using the Mac, no problem.

Yeah I'm on my third restore now...

About to boot up my XP desktop [have only turned it on twice in about 1.5 years since I got my Vista laptop... *Braces for HUGE influx of updates*]

Will report back if it works or not.

Awesome thanks!

XP booting up now

Why would anyone using a stable version of 3.1 want to update to 3.1.2??? Nothing wrong with 3.1

Do you need iTunes if it's not already JB'd?

I'm about to JB on XP PC but it doesn't have iTunes installed...

Here's what I did:

Attached my iPhone to iTunes cable on Windows (Vista). iPhone was updated to 3.1.2 before I connected it.

iTunes is version 9 is installed on the Vista laptop. iTunes was not running at the time of the blackra1n jailbreak.

Ran blackra1n. iPhone had the iTunes logo and white cable icon. Blackra1in got stuck on "running" (just hangs there).

Closed blackra1n. Removed cable from iPhone. Held home and power buttons on the iPhone at the same time until device turned off. Pressed power to turn device on again. Attached iPhone to cable, ran blackra1n, and repeated these steps about five (5) times until, instead of hanging on "running" with the iTunes logo and cable on the screen of the iPhone, I got the blackra1n picture on the iPhone screen. Then just followed instructions and it worked.

I never at any point in this process did a "restore."

Even though I started this process with iTunes closed it does load at some point in the process but it isn't an issue. Just follow the blackra1n instructions.

LOL...you're asking about STEP 1. Jeebus!

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Yes I KNOW.

I was just wondering if that was only so people who had already JB'd could restore to 3.1.2 first.

Jeebus.

Wow, like all of you, I had a TON of problems getting it to work.

It finally just worked.

The difference in what I did?

Bonjour was off (not sure if that really made a difference, just saying) and the phone was connected to iTunes with iTunes open.

EVERY SINGLE DESCRIPTION kept saying to kill iTunes. The first time I did it with iTunes open, it worked flawlessly.

Hope this helps.

Again.

Everyone with a 3g on XP SP3 and the issue where it hangs after the recovery (plug into itunes) logo comes up, try it with iTunes running.

Use the run as trick posted here. I've been able to get it on two different 3g devices that didn't work prior.

Don't kill iTunes. That is what did it for me.

Well screw it. I was happily sitting on 3.0.1 with a jailbreak and all was good in the world.

Thought this guys actual app would do the trick and allow me to be on the newest update and jailbroken but clearly his app isn't ready for primetime. And no trick anyone is posting is doing anything.

I will wait till the iPhone dev team releases a new version of redsn0w or something at least they will ensure it works 100% before releasing software to everyone.

For now I sit on 3.1.2 with NO jailbreak and I guess I will just have to wait. I have had to end up restoring my phone who knows how many times today cause no matter what when blackra1n makes my iphone restart I get stuck on the itunes logo with the white usb cable. No trick gets me around that.

And word to Geohot. Releasing an application then practically falling off the face of the earth isn't good for potential users of your software.

The Solution For Windows Vista

EPIC WIN: THE SOLUTION FOR WINDOWS VISTA

Sorry for that but I would want someone to do that if they got it as well.

I kept trying and restoring but it kept freezing at the USB Cable -> iTunes screen.

THE SOLUTION:

Move Blackra1n into your C: Drive directly.

E.g.

START > COMPUTER > OS(C: ) and put it in there.

Then run it from there (I did it as admin) and it goes without a hitch.

Nevermind these little tweaks like stopping processes, etc.

This works perfect.

Please tell me if it works for you!

Wow thanks for your help!! I tried it on an xp and it works now! YAY!!!!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have the following apps working with no problems:

Winterboard (plus themes, 5 icon dock, and transparent dock labels)
Status Notifier
NES (an older version that I had, just SSH'd it on)
Backgrounder
Liveclock (plus themes)
Lockscreen Info (plus Gruppled theme, clock hide, and 20 second lockscreen)
OpenSSH
WeatherIcon

I haven't tried SBSettings, since others are having problems with it (mainly doing resprings).

That sucks, Goodeye. The software is working. I think there is more success than failure. Give it another shot.

As a PC network guy, the location a file is being ran from has nothing to do with anything, as long as the acct has the correct permissions.

My word

Yes doesn't matter if it's in the root of C:/ I have tried that and no go.

Also dude I tired 25 times and nothing. I get stuck on the standard recovery screen and my only choice is to recover it to get it back to the normal home screen etc.

The jailbreak was not ready for prime time. At least when the Dev team releases their jailbreaks they KNOW for a fact what it does and doesn't work on and they make sure to warn people if it wont work on a specific iphone etc.

He just carelessly released it.

Sorry for off-topic, but I have no idea whether or not to install Rock and Icy?

CAn't do any harm just having them anyway can it?
