For weeks I’ve been mildly annoyed by a white blotch on my iPP 10.5, about 2” above the home button (in portrait). Finally decided to search MR and ended up here. The device is out of warranty. I guess on the one hand, I’m glad it’s not just me...but on the other hand, it sounds like it’s going to be tough to get it addressed/fixed/replaced without spending a bunch of money.

I think for a while I was able to largely ignore the blemish, but the more I focus on the issue, the more it bothers me. Cannot unsee. Ugh.

I know exactly what you mean by not being able to unsee it lol

It’s like black pen ink on a white shirt!

Although I’m glad I pretty much cannot see it at all watching Netflix. But on these forums and anything with a white or bright gray/bluish background it sticks out like a sore thumb

I bought it with a Credit Card with a 1 year automatic extended warranty (Discover), so I’m gonna give that a shot and see what happens. Discover has started to become very stingy lately so not looking forward to this hassle.

FYI I had a small white spot on the display of my 10.5” IPP. I didn’t think it was too noticeable but I too could not “unsee” it. I took it to the apple store (while under the original 1 year warranty) and they could immediately detect it and replaced the entire thing on the spot (this was last summer).

Canada, eh!
I did the same as I believe it is an inherent fault. Sold it and went for the new 11.
That's what I thought also. I got the Samsung Tab S4 because it has a nicer OLED screen. I might get a 12.9" iPad though.

How are you enjoying the 11" iPP?

Love the 11 to be honest - genuinely prefer it over the 10.5 due to the slightly bigger screen for media, FaceID and the improved Pencil which I use much more now.

Nice. How had the pencil improved?

My Samsung tablet included a pencil and it doesn't require charging. This might make it difficult for me to go back to an iPad.

I only use the Pencil for photo editing so didn't use it all the time. On the older Pro, when I needed the Pencil I had to stick it in the bottom (of the iPad ;)) to reconnect it and find somewhere to keep it between edits. It got to the point I rarely used it unless it was for some finer edits. Now I just stick it on the side before I start an editing session and use it as required without a second thought. It's a small thing but makes a massive difference. It also feels better in the hand this time around.

My iPad was given to me by my company, and fortunately I'm pretty sure they'll give me one of the 11" models within the next few months. Even so, I'd love to get the blotch addressed. If I can't do anything about the defect, it's going to be relegated to my kids - which is absurd for a device at this price point (and with its capabilities). I wouldn't feel right selling it to someone else...not marred by a blemish like that.

I bought it with a Credit Card with a 1 year automatic extended warranty (Discover), so I’m gonna give that a shot and see what happens. Discover has started to become very stingy lately so not looking forward to this hassle.

Please let us know how that goes.

Had no choice but to buy AppleCare on my 11 inch one in case something similar develops lol. Did anyone have the white spot appear on theirs without actually ever using it super intensively? I went to a store here in the UK and saw a display model had the white spot issue haha, so it definitely seems to be unavoidable eventually.

I've just got mine replaced under the 2 y. warranty protection we have in Switzerland by law. It had the very same bright spot above the home button which appeared after more than 1 year of normal use (bought it in 2017). The screen of the new one is perfect (fingers crossed) and its manufacture date is week 51 (late Dec.) 2018, hence just fresh from the factory. Let's hope they solved the issue in the meantime.

I signed up for an account just to say that I too had this problem with my 10.5 inch iPad pro. White spot above homebutton. Was driving me nuts and I've had it for over a year. But this thread gave me some hope about the consumer law. So, I made an appointment at the Apple store (Paris) today and received a new one without problem or having to defend or explain the situation. It says 0€ under 'consumer law'.
The guy did say that if my ipad had any accidental damage, I would not have gotten a free replacement.

Even though I still love my ipad, I'm also contemplating to sell it and go for the new one as I'm just not sure if this problem will return or if it was a particular batch of ipads (since apple isn't giving us any info or statement on this). I have no idea how to check manufacture date.

I used this site to check the manufacture date (just input the device serial number):

http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

My assumption is that they solved the issue in the meantime as Apple is still selling the iPad Pro 10.5" along the newest iPad Pro 11". Otherwise they would have discontinued it to avoid possible class actions, product recalls, etc.

Right, I guess they're trying to avoid that by quickly giving people new ones without too much hassle. Thanks for that link. I just checked and mine is also from Dec 2018!

It can't hurt to try. Try escalating to the manager and show him/her this thread, the Reddit thread(s), the MacRumors article, whatever you can find. The worst they can say is no and you'll only be out the time spent at the store. Good luck.
I already came and talked with the manager. He said that he can't replace my iPad Pro whatever the reason because no official thread or replacement program that Apple announce. The most interesting thing is, he said to me that, even I pay to replace my screen and get the same defect after 90 days of warranty of the replacement screen, Apple would charge us again for the next replacement. So sad and disappointed, but yeah thats the truth he said to me.

So my next step probably just use and live with it or I can even sell it to another person by explaining the defect that my iPad has (even the price will be low) and hold myself to buy another iPad or iPad Pro. I just can't live with this experience. Apple gives me a deep trauma for product this expensive with very poor defect acknowledgement, thats why I will hold to buy another Apple product except iPhone.

iPad lineups -> unfinished screen and bent problem
Macbook lineups -> don't like the keyboard
iPhone -> expensive, but at least good customer support
iMac -> probably would buy for my home use
Mac Mini -> too expensive, but surely viable for custom mouse, display, and keyboard preferences
In short: no product that was without compromise

Thats what I think about Apple right now. I can't believe I would think like this now after being an Apple follower since the iPhone 3G was born in 2009. If Apple always treat their users such as this, migrating to another platform is a no slouch for me, at least.

Yes, i see it like you do. It's a shame and slowly i beginn to think that Tim Cook is the wrong CEO at Apple.
The Quality of the products is bad at the time. They jerk the customers and stockholders.
Every year the tell us that they sold more devices as before because they earned a lot of money (that alone is ******** when we see that they make the devices till 30% more expensive as the year before).

The Apple Watch is another Story. In Germany the Heart Rate still can't be measured. Sorry that sucks.

At the moment i am sad about what they are doing with the Apple Company.

The story from the end of the eighties with apple comes again but there is no Steve Jobs anymore who can help.

I'm sorry to hear that but I'm also not surprised by their answer because that's exactly what they said to me (no official replacement program.)

Personally, I'm just going to live with it since the problem only shows up on a white screen. It doesn't affect my daily usage enough for me to justify getting rid of it. Like you however, the poor response to this QC issue has definitely soured my Apple experience.

I also have the issue on my 10.5" Pro - noticed it a year and a week after I bought it, unfortunately. Apple CS said I'd have to pay to repair it at my own expense, which according to their table is $450. ...yeah, no thanks. My wife's Macbook Air also has a similar screen defect but no recall on that either. We have 7 Apple devices in our home, but I think I won't buy another at this rate.

Yeah. I hope they will listen to our problem. I already do my best to ask for my rights. Nothing more disappointing than this ij my entire Apple product experience. If I can give a star rating, I would give 1 of 5 for this hahaha

I guess I’m just lucky. My iPad Pro 10.5 from release does not have this issue. Is it from pressure (display issue) or from a swollen battery?

Well, the issue seems to pop up on a small minority of devices - so I guess you could say that the "lucky" ones are those of us who have experienced it.

I don't think anyone knows for sure, but it sounds like there's an internal component pressing on the screen. I have no reason to believe it's a battery issue.

I don't know. Today I want to have another appointment with the Genius Bar to talk about this, whether it is display defect or battery problem.

People who are out of warranty need to stop paying Apple to repair this design flaw. Speak to a manager, make a stink out of it at the store, call senior advisors, escalate to customer relations. We all know that Tim Cook won’t do crap until a class action lawsuit hits him
