When you say new, it was in a new sealed box? Not a refurb white box?

What is the manufacturer date of build of this one?

Thanks

Brown box I think maybe a refurb then, sure if new comes in as you would think normal iPad box.

At least it has a late manufacturer date though of last month! That's good, let's hope Apple do know about this issue and have done some mods to fix the issue.

Someone needs to open up the 2019 production models of the 10.5 Pro and see if anything has changed, as far as shielding or modifications go.

Just found out I also have this issue... Manufacture date was 2017-07-03 and I bought it around the same time that summer. Out of warranty. I really hope Apple does sth abt it... I really don't want to pay the $499 price

Oh my gosh, that is a gigantic bright spot. Mine is much, much smaller, more like the size of a pea.

I was planning to get the 10.5" iPad Pro but after reading all this stuff about the bright spots appearing on the displays, I'm not even sure if I should get an iPad at all. Has Apple officially addressed this issue and fixed it? Have they changed anything in the manufacturing process of the 10.5" Pros? Is the iPad Air 3 facing the same issues?

No, Apple has not officially acknowledged the existence of this problem. Some folks have had their 10.5 Pro exchanged at the Apple store as a result of the issue, but that seems to be a bit hit-or-miss depending upon the store and the person behind the counter.

It is highly unlikely that Apple changed the manufacturing process for the 10.5 Pro. That model has been discontinued.

A good way to determine if the Air 3 will suffer from the same fate as the 10.5 Pro is by comparing and contrasting the iFixit teardowns of the 10.5 Pro and Air 3. If you see a physical difference in the area where the white spot is occurring, then it is reasonable to assume that Apple quietly tweaked the internal design to address the issue.

If you need an iPad now, I'd recommend getting a 2018 iPad when it goes on sale ($249/$329) and wait to see what the 4th gen Pros offer.

I'm delighted with my 2018 iPad and will continue to use it until I see what Apple does with the 4th gen Pros (and more importantly, with iOS).

I, too, noticed a bright spot about 5 cm above the home button on my 12.9 Pro 2nd Gen. It's faint, but still noticeable when scrolling on white web pages. I bought my iPad last June, so I still have about 6 months of warranty left. I guess I'll have to try to get it replaced before the warranty expires. I hope Apple does something about this, as this is clearly a manufacturing defect. Very disappointed.
Update on this. I contacted Apple support about the issue. Since my iPad was still under warranty, they replaced it for a new one (built in 4/2019). I wonder if they’ve made any changes to fix the problem, or am I going to have another bright spot next year - this time with no warranty.

So on the paper work, what does it say is being done? Exchange for customer satisfaction? Or does it specifically say what is wrong with the iPad?

so brand new iPad Pro, or refurbished? Did it come sealed in the box with all the accessories, etc?

I believe it’s a refurbished model. It came only in a protective wrap. No box or accessories.

Here are the serial number lookup results, if anybody is interested:

It’s refurb but still new. You can tell if the serial starts with an N.

This is a serious issue. We have payed premium price of 650$ not to get free problems with it,especially the display. We should file an class action lawsuit. This is not what we want for 650$

So what you’re saying is, we should file a class action suit. Am I getting that right?

Chiming in with my experience with this.

Bought the Pro 10.5 on release day. Display went nuts last March (looked like a bad display cable - multi-colored lines/static across the screen, flashing, etc) and was replaced under warranty.

Replacement unit developed a bright spot directly above the Home Button in July - I assumed it was just a freak thing and didn't do any research at the time, and after a bit of a runaround, it was also replaced for free, even though it was outside the 90-day replacement warranty. Kudos to Apple on how they finally resolved that one.

The third unit started showing a bright spot in exactly the same spot a few days ago - not as bright as the last one, but I assume it will get worse. Did a support chat, took it in to the Genius Bar today, and, while the Genius admitted she could see the bright spot, it passed all diagnostics, and I was offered the $449 repair or trade-in at $318. They're not getting enough complaints to make the issue "official", so we're at an impasse.

I'm more than a little disappointed in Apple. There was a time when they would have made this right, but those days have apparently passed. I've had three 10.5 Pros, and not one has made it to a year without developing a display issue. I love the size and form factor, I'm not bowled over by the 2018 Pros (especially the price), and nothing else ticks all the boxes for me (not even the new Air, which lacks the speakers of the Pro - I use mine to listen to podcasts all the time, and need the extra volume).

There are basically no good options here - it's a minor issue that will probably get worse over time, Apple is disinclined to do anything about it, I don't really want to spend $300+ (refurb minus trade-in) to get another unit that may develop the same issue, and I don't like the cost of upgrading to the 2018 11".

Why would you even consider rewarding the company that stiffed you by buying another one of their devices to replace the one they refused to make good on?

Oh, I get that, believe me. But I've been a heavy iPad user for almost a decade, and this size works the best for me. It's an internal war between exactly what you pointed out, and knowing that I have a (mildly) faulty device that is only going to go down in value over time, so there is some impetus to get the most out of it that I can now. No, I don't want to reward them for it, but not having an iPad Pro of this size (for all of the features that brings) also doesn't work for me.

Like I said, there are no good options here.

So far, I'm 13.5 months into my iPad Pro 10.5 (Production Date of Oct 2017) and haven't noticed any problems with my screen at all. I have AC+ until 4/2020, so I will be watching as the months creep by.

I think I’d be tempted to try another Apple Store, and wait until after the next Pro refresh to pick up a replacement of some kind at a lower price if all else fails.

Not a bad suggestion. It also seems a bit odd that there are still, 6 months after release, no refurb 2018 iPad Pros - there isn't even a section for them on Apple's site, so it's not that they're out of stock (the 2018 Mac mini, released at the same time, has been through at least two refurb restocks in the last couple months). Even when they do arrive, I need a 256GB iPad, which will still be $800-ish at a 15% discount, so around $500 if I trade my 10.5" in. That could be tempting.

There should be a class action due to the volume of people experiencing this issue. I bought my iPad pro 2 in 06/12/107 and have started noticing the white dot now 05/16/2019. Apple store said it would definitely be a warranty repair (they actually replace it not repair it) if it was under the one year warranty requirement. I contacted my credit card company (PC Financial Mastercard) to see about the 1 year extended warranty buying with their Mastercard provides. I was informed by the insurance company ManuLifte that underwrites the coverage that no computer products or accessories are covered under the extended credit card warranty including iPads, smart phones, etc.). So the only option available to me was to buy a replacement (refurbished model) from Apple for over $600.00 canadian. So unfortunately i am left with looking a white spot on an expensive IPAD PRO 2 Retina display that is less than two years old and Apple saying unfortunately they cannot do anything to assist even though they are well aware of the common manufacturing issue. Saddly.. I guess apple wants to ensure they make the next billion. I can see why Apple shares are dropping and the consumer confidence has been seriously eroded over the last years.

So if you got a replacement or brand new refurbished iPP 10.5, you'd be singing a different song with regards to the outrage. We all say to do a class action lawsuit but no one's doing. Takes one person. Just one. I'm looking at you--

Actually I would of been happy if they at least gave a further discount knowing it’s a common issue. Problem with a class action in Canada is the cost to get it started. I just wish apple was more sympathetic rather than all about how much they can get out if someone’s pocket.
