Just purchased a new 64 GB 10.5” Pro for $299 from Walmart. Manufactured Dec 25, 2018. Trying to decide if I should get AppleCare+. On the one hand, it seems like a good idea in light of this issue, but on the other, AppleCare+ is $129 I think, which is nearly half the price I paid for this, and I assume there’s still a deductible if I need to get the screen replaced? I also wonder what would happen if I tried to get a replacement in May 2021. It seems like they stopped producing new ones at the end of 2018 and have only been producing refurbed ones in 2019, so are they really going to still have replacements available 2 years from now? Or is there a chance they would run out and replace it with an Air 2019 or something they deem to be equivalent?

Personally I think I would buy AppleCare+ for it just based on this issue as long as you plan to keep it for over a year. There wouldn’t be a deductible for a screen replacement as long as there wasn’t a cracked screen or any accidental damage. The white spots are a defect not an accidental claim and apple doesn’t charge deductibles for those.

If it is a defect, he shouldn't need extended warranty (aka apple care +)

Did you buy it on a credit card? Most credit cards extend the manufacturers warranty by an additional year. No need for Apple Care.

Yes, on a Citi card, which says it extends the warranty by two years, but from everything I’ve read, credit card warranties are the worst and they will try to find every reason to deny your claim. Also Citi includes this in their fine print, which makes me wonder if this issue would be covered at all:

Coverage doesn’t apply under these circumstances:
■ The item has a product defect, recall, or experiences normal wear and tear where no failure has occurred.

They could call it a product defect and deny, or they could say it’s wear and tear and since the iPad still works, it doesn’t count as a failure.

But, I may just risk it and rely on the Citi warranty since I only paid $299 and the Apple warranty is such a huge percentage of that.

I’ve never had any issues with my claims through Chase. I’ve probably done four or five over the years and all have been approved without issues. One claim was used for the white spot on my iPad.

So my replacement iPad pro(11 month old) has started to show a faint white blob like I had with the original. Also to the side of that is a small bright spot.
Wasn't that happy with replacement as there was always a fair bit of backlight bleed not present on the original.
A week left on apple care so off to the store on Sunday.
Hopefully get it replaced and then sell it and get a new 11 inch. Just hoping this doesn't suffer a similar fate.

I just contacted Apple support concerning the bright spot on my 10.5 Pro. Nothing showed up on the diagnostic however he advised that I send it in for repair or replacement. So now I just have to wait for the box to arrive to get this process moving forward.

My 10.5 is 11 months old now with AC but I noticed the bright spot about 6 months ago. Until recently it didn’t bother me so much, was only seen on white screen. However I don’t know if it’s getting brighter but I am now seeing it when I play videos on full screen too.

Took my iPad Pro to apple store. They acknowledged the white spot issue. Ordered me a new one and held it so I could check with my credit card company to see if they would cover the replacement (Apple does not do a repair for this issue) since it was just under two years old. The credit card company said sorry no coverage for computer related equipment.

The store said to contact Apple Care and see if they might do something for me in the form of a further discount. I don’t have an Apple Card extended warranty but the store support person thought Apple might do something since it’s an extremely common issue. Apple Care said nope, we can not offer anything beyond the cost to replace with an identical model which was over $600.00 Canadian. Oh, Apple Care was quick to point out I could always do the trade-up program where I would get less then 200.00 for my iPad Pro that I paid 1000.00 for two years ago and spend another $1000.00 for their newest model. I said you have to be kidding me, you’re turning a defect issue into a sales pitch on a new model. Unbelievable. Anyway the Apple store sent back the replacement iPad since I wasn’t going to spend another $600.00 for it. So I sit with an Apple 'top model' 10.5” iPad Pro looking at a white spot that Apple considers is not their problem.

I guess Apple could leverage this issue as a sales pitch to buy their Apple care extended warranty (adding more to their insane profits).

I was going to replace my wife’s older iPad Air 2 with the latest pro but that idea is no longer being considered. Hopefully a class action will eventually come up or Apple will own up to their manufacturing problem and at least provide a serious replacement price that is fair. How about $0.00.

So you can only do replacements for the same iPad? Can't pay difference for upgrade?

No. I was one of the lucky ones that have my iPad Pro 10.5" replaced with a new one even tho my warranty expired and I didn't have Apple Care.

Everyone that has the same issue should call 1-800-MYAPPLE. That's what I did, spoke to the representative for 45 minutes and the agreed to replace it with a new one. However, they will only replace it with the exact same model. I asked to get another color instead and they said that they couldn't.

I called 1800 my-apple and they said best they could do was 600.00 for an identical model. I even said can you at least give me a better price and they said no, that’s the best we can do. You can also trade in for a newer model but the max value is 419.00 Canadian but that is an estimate value based on a perfect display. A third party company will evaluate after you trade in and purchase a new model first. If they come back with 200.00 value for yours then you only have the option of taking it or leaving it. The new one will still cost you full price.

My iPad (bought in June 2015) had the exact same problem since a few months but I didn't care that much at the beginning. However it bothered me more lately and it was almost two years old, so I thought I'd try to get it replaced.

Last sunday I wrote the Apple Support chat about that problem, but the support guy said that has to be worked out via a phone call, so he scheduled a call for a few minutes later. I talked to two guys, explained them my problem again and they arranged a free replacement. On Tuesday I got the shipping box to send the iPad to them, on Friday I got the replacement (probably would have been on Thursday but that day was an official holiday).

They even asked if I want the replacement device to be personalized like mine was and I said yes, but I think the support guy didn't understand that correct, since it isn't engraved, but I don't really care. I got it replaced for free and that's the most important.

See, reading through this thread this is the problem with Apple when it comes to warranty replacements (both in and out of warranty).

It shouldn’t be down to sheer luck or who you happen to speak with what service or outcome you get.

The consensus would not have the problem reoccur on the replacement.

Following up on my previous post.
Went to Cardiff store and after running through all the diagnostics and then me pointing it out to them , they replaced it again.
This is going straight for sale as I can't trust the same issue won't happen. Apple care runs out next week and you only get 90 days on the replacement.
Bought a 11inch pro from John Lewis with a 2 year guarantee - we'll see how this one goes.

So I sent my 2017 launch 10.5 in for battery replacement under the 99 dollar battery program. The battery was worn down to 70% capacity. My 10.5 also had the bright spot issue in the past six months, Apple sent back a new white box 10.5 manufactured 3-11-19. Hopefully this is a new revision with corrected internals to protect the screen from pressure in that area.

So did your IPad have bright spot but Apple wouldn't replace originally so you used the battery program instead to get a refurb?

How did you know the battery was at 70% was this via Apple diagnostics?

I don't have bright spot....yet but have AC+ until Sept, I imagine my battery is worn a little so wonder if I should get a replacement, it would cost me £69 per incident, maybe worth it?

My device that I received in August 2018 as a replacement for my original "day one" bright spot device has started to show signs of the spot appearing.... my AC+ runs out in 10 days and I've just initiated an Express Replacement.

Hopefully this will be a newer device, I've seen a few people on here have received 2019 manufactured devices...

I don't want to have to upgrade as I have no need or desire to at the moment

If it is a defect, he shouldn't need extended warranty (aka apple care +)

I agree he shouldn't, but it obviously makes things easier. I like AC+ because I don't have to deal with the differing opinions of Apple staff in-store when they examine the device. I contact apple over chat, ask for an express replacement, answer a few questions, pay the retainer, and a replacement turns up the next day usually.

Replacement arriving today, and it’s a February 2019 device (week 8). Fingers crossed.
