My iPad Pro 10.5 has the white spot. It is quite distracting, but as I bought it at launch it’s well out of warranty.

I live in the UK but visited France last week. I went into a store that sells Apple products. Low and behold they had an iPad Pro 10.5 on display and it too had the obvious white spot on the screen!

I am surprised that Apple hasn’t really acknowledged the obvious defect.

I don’t care any more. Yesterday I got a new iPad Pro 11” and will sell my old Pro.

Update: Sold my iPad Pro 10.5" for £230. Well pleased.

I don’t understand why is the white spot such a big deal? It’s nothing but cosmetic right? Is it?

That is true. It’s not a big deal for me. It doesn’t change functionality at all. But you pay big bucks you have a right to have a quality flaw free device.

I agree.

Apple should fix this.

But even if they don’t, I don’t see why we can’t still enjoy our devices? Apple isn’t doing the noble thing. And yes we should contact them about this. But if after all attempts things don’t work out, what stops us from enjoying our devices as is

I don’t have a Pro, but if I did I would certainly use the device as is rather than pay them to “fix” what should be done for free as it is an obvious defect. It wouldn’t even be so bad if they did fix it, but instead it is for a replacement where the issue will probably crop up too in time.

I can see that the issue would spoil the enjoyment of the device though. For me, it would be worse than a minor cosmetic issue out of the box. Put the iPad in a case and you won’t notice those, but you will notice a bright spot on the screen.

You certainly have a right to a flaw free device for this money and as a result, I doubt I’ll ever move to the Pro line. I would be angry enough if an iPad costing half as much got the issue. Those selling Pros are probably taking a hit to some extent due to Apple’s non-response to this issue; either because it is being sold/traded in with a defect or because buyers may well be aware that the issue could pop up in the future and will decide what they’re willing to pay with that in mind.

The 10.5 has this issue, the 2018 11 and 12.9 bend and have other problems... I wonder if the 2019 release will fix these issues?

Has anyone else’s white spot gotten larger over time?

Just bought a brand new 10.5 pro 256gb from Currys in the UK for £541(I don't need 256Gb that just seemed like a good price).

Also thinking I don't want white spot hassle in a year...take it back and grab a 64Gb Air for £465...but we do have EU based consumer protection in the UK which even after the warranty period you can push the retailer to repair or replace - but the onus is on you to prove the defect was there from manufacture. I would imagine all the articles and forum posts online would provide a pretty good basis of evidence that it's a 'latent' defect, i.e. one that is present in all, just waiting to manifest itself.

Just wondering if it's worth the hassle for the sake of keeping it, or just bang out and get the Air while the pro is still nicely shrink wrapped !

John Lewis have the 10.5 beginning at £599. But you do get a 2 year guarantee for that

Yeah I'd seen that, not bothered about paying £140 more for it though. £90 more was OK, any more difference I'd just go get the Air (probably from John Lewis as well)

Trouble is, if it does need replacing because of the screen white spot, the replacement will probably suffer from the same fate sooner or later. It seems to be a fundamental flaw in design.

I have seen, as I have already mentioned, an iPad Pro 10.5 on display in a shop that has this flaw.

I would now not touch a Pro 10.5 with a barge pole. Which is such a shame because apart from the obvious distraction on the screen, more noticeable when scrolling, it’s a blooming good device.

Congrats on selling.

I tried one company (M*z*ma) but they rejected saying the display was faulty (until they returned iPad with a sticker pointing to 1mm blob I hadn’t ever even seen it before!)

Can I ask who you sold yours through?

The bright spot issue is something that once you see it you can't un-see it.

This is especially annoying when the device (like iPads) are all about the screen. The screen is the focal point, it's what you're looking at and interacting with 100% of the time. Having a display defect on the screen would hinder the experience and make it less satisfying to use and look at.

Some might say "oh it's not a big deal, you can't really see it all the time, blah blah," and I say this is nonsense. It is a big deal when it's right in your face.

Not quite I don't think, you have up to six years to make a complaint, but after six months you have to prove the defect was present in the first six months. If it didn't appear in the first six months you'd have to argue it was a latent defect, i.e. in there, just waiting to manifest.

As deaglecat mentioned, it's with the retailer as well, so some retailers are better than others, or indeed may have gone out of business. Essentially you have a remedy, but it's probably going to require an argument and some pushing.

You could also try the same remedy through the credit card company if you used one, the law includes them in the liability, they may be easier to persuade than the retailer.

I think I'll take the pro back, avoid the hassle, go for the Air and spend the extra on some Airpods !

I think that is a wise choice. It's all well and good saying that there is some form of protection, but you know as well as I do, everyone will be making excuses as to why they can't honour it and the buck will be passed form pillar to post.

I know that this is looking on the glum side, your iPad might well be OK. But it does seem to be quite a wide spread issue and i think it is a problem waiting to happen for you.

I sold my iPad Pro 10.5 to my nephew on Saturday. He wasn't bothered about the white spot. But I found it too distracting and my OCD went into overdrive!!!

Since upgrading to the cellular iPad Pro 11” 1TB our daughter utilizes my previous cellular iPad Pro 10.5” 512GB as a learning tool and hopes it will not break anytime soon.

I recently bought an iPad Air 2019 with an Apple Pencil and I'm most likely going to purchase AppleCare+ too, only because I'm not sure if Apple fixed the bright spot issue with the iPad Air 2019 or not. Previously I was going to buy a 10.5" Pro, but went with the Air 2019 because of the issue. Why doesn't Apple openly talk about this widespread issue? It's unbelievable, really..

Why should they when people still continue to buy these products knowing that the issue exists... and are even willing to reward Apple by giving them even MORE money (by purchasing AppleCare+)?
