I noticed the bright spot on my launch 10.5 a few weeks ago and i can’t unsee it now. It’s really starting to annoy me :( Guess I’m going to upgrade to a newer model sooner rather than later.

I bought my iPad Pro 10.5 shorty after the 11 was released last year. Basically wanted the best DAC Apple has produced so far in an iOS device. The DAC does not disappoint, I'd say it's on par with $3000 dedicated DACs like Chord Hugo 2 in terms of sound quality.

However a bright spot has appeared after a couple of months about 2" from the home button. I got the iPad replaced in Apple store no problem. The new iPad 10.5 is manufactured in May 2019 and its display is almost perfect. Definitely more uniform than my old iPad. No signs of the bright spot at its usual location whatsoever.

I still have a year and a few months of AppleCare left. Not sure whether this new iPad will develop a bright stop also, but if it does, I am replacing again.

Today Apple replaced my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5" for a second time because of a pin head sized white spot about 3/4" above the home button. It almost looked like something from behind the panel is pushing through. The iPad Pro was originally purchased in August 2017, with the first replacement taking place in December 2018. My AppleCare is about to expire in 40 days; probably not enough time for the issue to resurface and to get it taken care of.

The Apple employee at the Genius Bar had not heard of this being a common issue and tried to look for handling issues (specific app that requires me to press hard, pressure in backpack, taking the iPad out of Apple iPad leather folio, high temperatures). I want to say I am pretty careful with my gadgets. Has anybody with the I have been using a glass screen protector? I wondering if that could somehow create forces on the screen that damage it over time.

It’s hard to notice when taking a picture but, but see the circle.
So the bright spot issue with my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 started this month and of course mine is now out of warranty. I have an appointment with Genius Bar tomorrow. The spots run along the bottom, near the home button and also a large spot about 1.5 inches above the home button.

Dunno about the spot in the middle(I had that too previously), but the right side seems like backlight failure.

You have two problems there. Bright spot and an issue with the backlighting mechanism.

Glad you got a good screen on your replacement. I just bought a second-hand 10.5” Pro and I must’ve lucked out because the screen is fine too; very uniform actually. It’s more than a year old without AppleCare so I’d have a very hard time getting Apple to replace it—it’s a grey area in Australia whether they’re obliged to, so they tend to say no and play hard ball at least first. If it’s lasted this long without a spot developing it might never, at least that’s what I’m hoping. Who knows?

The comment about the DAC is very strange to me; quite unbelievable really. I use a Chord Mojo and no iOS device can come close. What’s the DAC in the 10.5” Pro and why is it so good? Do you mean to say you use an amplifier from the iPad’s analogue out and it sounds as good as a Hugo? If so, which amplifier? Maybe the amplifier is what you like more or think is better?

That is terrible, one of the worst I’ve seen. I hope you get it replaced; please update us. No way an expensive “Pro” product should only last a year before developing serious issues like that.

Having the bright white spot issue with my daughters 2017 10.5" IPP. One question I have of anybody is, if the Apple store just replaces it with a new one are they going to copy over all the data from the old one? i.e photos, all apps and their data? Music no big deal but, my daughter has a lot of projects created with Affinity Photo, Procreate and other drawing apps that she is gun-shy about getting it replaced. I'm just not positive if an iTunes backup will save all these projects and then restore them on the new iPad. Should I be worried?

"By default Affinity Photo saves locally to your iPad, to save to your iCloud account please use the Save A Copy and then choose either the Affinity Photo folder or any other location on your iCloud account"

No need to worry. I’ve replaced 5 generations of iPads with the same data being restored from previous backups.

Make sure you have iCloud backup enabled in settings, and it should be auto backing up every day or so. iTunes backup is a good secondary measure.

I visited my neighborhood Apple store today (in the US) with my 21 month old iPad Pro 10.5 I've been following this thread for about six months since my white spot first appeared a bit after the warranty expired. No special support or assistance was offered or provided. The "Genius" said he'd never seen one like it and was unimpressed by a quick google search showing pages of complaints and threads.

I ultimately paid for the refurb'd model and came home and filed a warranty claim with my credit card company for the extended warranty. I am trying to decide if a unpleasant letter to Cupertino would do anybody any good or not. Overall pretty discouraging.

My IPP 10.5 purchased April 2018 has also developed a white spot the size of about a penny about 2” from the home button. It occurred over time and is probably not very obvious unless you know what to look for.
I have Apple Care and will likely exchange it.

Another joining the list with white spot.

I bought the 10.5 pro in June 2017 and the issue first appeared in January 2018. I took it back to the Apple Shop and they changed it there and then.

Roll on to July 2019 and the spot is back on the new iPad!

I’ve been online with Apple today and they’ve advised me to take it into Apple Store. I know I’m outside the warranty but I’m hoping for a replacement / refund under UK consumer law.

“Under consumer laws in the UK, consumers are entitled to a free of charge repair or replacement, discount or refund by the seller, of defective goods or goods which do not conform with the contract of sale. For goods purchased in England or Wales, these rights expire six years from delivery of the goods and for goods purchased in Scotland, these rights expire five years from delivery of the goods. “

https://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/

I think the relevant bit is here:

“..... A consumer is also entitled to withdraw from the contract by returning the product in exchange for a full refund if the consumer rejects the goods within 30 days or if the product does not conform with the contract after one repair or replacement.”

As this is the exact same issue that my previous iPad was replaced under I think I have a strong argument for a replacement / refund.

Thoughts?

I really just want them to swap my device out for an 11 inch at this point. I am so sick of this giant spot on my screen.

I shipped my iPad off to Apple for a replacement battery (which I was happily willing to pay ~$100 for) and they declined to service my iPad because there was an incredibly small bright spot on the screen that I hadn't even noticed. So instead of just replacing my battery for $100 they said they literally weren't able to unless I forked over $499 to fix the other issue. I know I'm out of warranty which is why I was happy to pay for a new battery but they caused the bright spot and are using that as pretext for denying any repairs. Insane.
