I was on the fence about AppleCare+ and finally decided I should probably do it, but I missed my 60 day window by a couple weeks. Oh well, $130 for a device I only paid $299 for seemed a bit excessive anyway. Hope I don’t get a bright spot, but not a huge loss if I do. Will just pass it on to my daughter, and would probably not buy an iPad again if I had a bad experience on my first iPad ever.

You'll buy another iPad. What we say online is never set in stone. It's okay if you do, it's the lure of Apple.

Talking of QC issues, my replacement iPad has a loose home button. Makes a crackling sound just when I gently put my finger on it. Will have to send it in again...

I had this. I tried compressed air on it and it fixed it for a while but it came back. I then tried a squirt of electrical cleaning fluid and rocked the button. That did the trick.

All it takes is one person to be tech saavy on these forums and works at Best Buy to get the memo out to other stores on what to look for, etc.
It's actually more than that. Best Buy partners with a liquidator for these trade-ins. It is most likely that the liquidator is on to the problem and informed Best Buy that they wouldn't accept any iPads with this defect... otherwise Best Buy wouldn't care. I've traded in a lot of gadgets at Best Buy and they were always only concerned that the device booted and wasn't bent and had an intact screen.

This tells me that the problem is more widespread than any of us realize.

Either way, Best Buy knows, whether it's the company that is buying the trade-ins from Best Buy or whomever.

I’ve had the issue twice now. The first one developed it around the 12 month mark and the second one was around the 4 month mark. I kept the second one for a few more months as the spot wasn’t as bright, it was larger though. I thought that I’d try to persist with it, but it bothered me every time that I picked my iPad up. I use it for reading forums and web sites a lot, so there was often a white background where the issue was visible. I’m not close to an Apple Store, so I organised a postal return of my iPad. It’s currently on the way back to Apple for assessment & hopefully a replacement.
I love the 10.5 form factor, the 4 speakers and the headphone jack, it has been my favourite iPad except for this issue (and I have the latest 12.9 too). I really hope that my replacement doesn’t get the issue too, but my luck to date has me believing that it will.

I called Apple and they were super nice about mine. It’s about 18mos old with no Apple care. The person on the phone was great. Her attitude gave me a glimmer of hope that they might perform an out of warranty swap. Anyway, she had me take it to an Apple store and let them assess it. The person at the Apple store said he really couldn’t see anything. That of course nixed any chance of a need to replace by Apple. Anyway, I did appreciate them taking the time to look at it out of warranty but I do feel slightly offput by the person not really seeing the mark when I feel it’s fairly obvious. Hopefully, they will eventually fix it via recall. I’m not real sure what to do next. Repair at Apple is cost prohibitive and my moral compass won’t allow me to offload it on somebody on eBay without full disclosure. The white spot sure is annoying for any kind of reading.

I’m sorry to hear that they didn’t replace yours. I was told to send mine in and they will replace it, although I fear that the same thing could still happen to me and that they return my iPad instead of a replacement.
I totally agree with your views. It ruins the experience when you see it and I am usually using my iPad with a white background. It also makes the iPad worth less to sell and upgrade. It is a fault and not like we have done anything for this to occur. I hope that Apple starts replacing all affected iPP10.5 regardless of Apple Care or country.

Here’s a pic of my screen. As you can tell it’s hard to see, however, as soon As you scroll the screen, the white spot in the bottom left corner of the “write your reply...” box stays while any dark items that pass over the spot will lighten. That spot is roughly 2” above the home button and centered on the screen.

Apple is replacing my replacement, so this will be my 3rd iPP 10.5. Both had the bright spot on the screen. It has been shipped and should be delivered by the end of the week. I’m happy that it is being replaced, but worried that it will happen again. I think that I will stick with the iPP 10.5 until the 3rd release of the 11” though if the 2nd version is released this year, or I might upgrade to the 2nd 11” if it isn’t released until next year.

How old, did you have Apple care? What were serial numbers for manufacturing date?

How old, did you have Apple care? What were serial numbers for manufacturing date?

I got my 1st iPP 10.5 mid June 2017, on the release date. I purchased Apple care. It developed 2 white spots around 12 months later, one above the home button and one in the bottom right corner. It was a couple of months after that, I think September or October, that I had it replaced under warranty, I didn’t need to use the Apple Care that I had purchased. I am in Australia where there is an official 12 month Apple warranty, but a law that Apple abides by and generally gives consumers 2 years warranty.
The replacement device developed one larger white spot above the home button in March of this year, so only 5-6 months after I got it. The thing was that the white patch was dimmer, but larger this time. I tried to live with it, but it was actually bugging me and I noticed it every time I used my iPad.
On the 1st of June, I bought a just released 8-core i9 MacBook Pro and asked about getting my AirPods and iPP 10.5 both looked at due to issues at the same time. I have mobility issues so I don’t make it to an Apple Store often. But there were no free geniuses there that day so I didn’t get the iPad looked at. A few more months went past and the white spot was getting the better of me and I wanted to ask about a replacement again. I chatted with Apple Support online and told them the above. My Apple Care had now expired by almost 2 months. I’d never used it. But the issue has occurred within the 2 years. My replacement iPad was still under a year old also and the theory here is that when a replacement iPad is issued in Australia that the 2 year warranty begins again. It’s not an official Apple warranty though since that is 90 days, but Australian Consumer Law. It’s unclear though what went into play here for my replacement though, but it might have been the Australian Consumer Law, the age of the replacement iPad or that I’d tried to make an appointment during the warranty period and it didn’t work out for me, I’m not sure.

I don’t have my original manufacture date on hand right now, but the replacement was week of 23rd June 2018 and the one on the way says 29th July 2019.

EU warranty is only 2 years from initial purchase.

I have mine since launch, and it was fine until six months ago, when I posted saying there was nothing wrong with my screen, but a few months back I started noticing a small white spot an inch above the home button, and an even worse problem, a very noticeable thick bright line on the bottom edge of my screen.

Had mine since launch. I’m going on 2 bright spots now. First showed probably at 1.5 years? Both in lower left of screen. Pretty frustrating. Apple says it’s out of hardware warranty.

450~ to repair.

Does anyone have an action list or class action started. Some way to get Apple’s attention about this?

I’m batting 3/4 with apple.

2011 MacBook GPU totally destroyed.
10.5 IPad bright spots.
And......the wonderful butterfly keyboard.I never know if it’s going to type. A reasonable person would take a hint.

Pretty frustrating.
Is there a reddit section on this? Twitter?

I think I’m going to keep retrying Apple on this. Talk with someone.

They will never acknowledge this as a manufacturing / design fault. And that 450 repair is ludicrous.

Be consequent and switch to a different brand. That’s how you may get the attention of this despicable company.

My AC+ running out in a week. No spot yet...?...do all get eventually? My iPad is showing 2 years old.

Do I chance and keep this , or use a repair for £39 and get a refurb, which would be a newer manufacturer date, and hopefully maybe a fix, would mean a new battery as well?

I’m kinda late to this bright spot phenomena but, just to ask, has there been any clarification on how/why the spots appear. It seems so random but is there anything at all that I can do to prevent it happening?

I’m curious that mostly (from what I can tell) these spots appear towards the bottom of display and around the home button which makes me wonder if there are pressure points where people would tend to press and scroll. Many of the photos I have seen show the spots being suspiciously close to where people’s thumb would naturally push/tap while scrolling etc. The home button would, naturally be subject to increased push/tap pressure also

I’m not suggesting those with this issue have been heavy handed with their iPad. Not at all. I am just thinking something with the lamination process in this particular model has resulted in an overly sensitive (to pressure points) panel?

If I were you, I would definitely do it. Yes for sure you would get a brand new battery. After two years your current iPad battery is probably halfway used, or at least worn down a bit.

What do you think about bright spot issue? I'm thinking that Apple must know about it, and for newer manufacturered units, after say Air 3 started, may have put in a fix?

I'd hope that the refurb sent would be a newer manufacturered and have a new battery?

If you don't have a spot, what are you going to have repaired?

My 10.5 Pro had it happen after my warranty was up. I babied mine, and so it was never an issue of user error or whatever. Apple store totally played dumb with it, and wouldn’t relent, so I used my credit card extended warranty to have it replaced. Poor Discover had to pay for apples sleezy CS. It is definitely a manufacturing defect, and there is no saying if they have fixed it. If I was a betting man, I would say they are done with that model and nothing was changed.

I ended up selling the replacement a month ago and getting an 11 Pro on sale. My refurb 10.5 was fine, and had no issues, but I just couldn’t really trust it wouldn’t come back. I said I would never give apple another dollar, but i relented, as they have me hooked. I know, I should be ashamed of myself.

Don't have the credit card protection, so I'll be stuck. No bright spot at moment though. But battery must be worse so tempted.

Do you get a refurb replacement as if you bought one yourself officially from Apple store?

What manufacturing date was your replacement?

Do you get a longer warranty when you receive the refurb?

Thanks
