I’m kinda late to this bright spot phenomena but, just to ask, has there been any clarification on how/why the spots appear. It seems so random but is there anything at all that I can do to prevent it happening?

I’m curious that mostly (from what I can tell) these spots appear towards the bottom of display and around the home button which makes me wonder if there are pressure points where people would tend to press and scroll. Many of the photos I have seen show the spots being suspiciously close to where people’s thumb would naturally push/tap while scrolling etc. The home button would, naturally be subject to increased push/tap pressure also

I’m not suggesting those with this issue have been heavy handed with their iPad. Not at all. I am just thinking something with the lamination process in this particular model has resulted in an overly sensitive (to pressure points) panel?

I suspect that it’s caused by pressure from the display connector pushing against the back of the screen. I’ve noticed that when I hold my iPad naturally, my fingers that are touching the back of the device tend to be in the area where the connector is and where the spot developes, and if you hold the device with only one hand on that side, your fingers are especially putting a lot of pressure there. I am being extra careful about only holding the device with both hands, or if I do hold with one hand, I don’t hold it on the side with the home button.

Edit: Also, you generally squeeze that area when you press the home button. I don’t press my home button, but instead use the swipe from bottom gesture to go home, which is more natural for me anyways because I have an iPhone X and am used to that.

This makes sense. Like you, I have become aware of how I handle mine and try avoiding any pressure around home or bottom screen in general. It sucks and is ridiculous for apple not to address this, given the problem seems widespread. But if it ‘potentially’ helps to treat with kid gloves then this is what I’ll be doing.

Don't have the credit card protection, so I'll be stuck. No bright spot at moment though. But battery must be worse so tempted.

Do you get a refurb replacement as if you bought one yourself officially from Apple store?

What manufacturing date was your replacement?

Do you get a longer warranty when you receive the refurb?

Thanks
The replacement that I got came in a small box with no accessories, which the Apple genius removed and then gave me the iPad only .

It’s not quite the same as buying one from the Apple store, because I think they keep a separate stock for warranty replacements. The genius was not able to guarantee that I would receive a new unit, just that it would have a new battery and shell.

The build date was February 2019. I actually got this replacement in June of this year, so fairly recent build date.

The warrantee for these kind of replacements are only 90 days unfortunately, so that was a bit of a bummer.

I know some people have been denied battery replacements due to the white spot, but I wonder if we were to get a battery replacement, thus a screen replacement, at the very first sign of the white spot, when it’s still very hard to notice, if that could be a cheap way to get the screen replaced. I know that will be my first move if it happens to me out of warranty. Just don’t procrastinate and let it get really noticeable or they will deny you.

If someone starts a twitter thread @ Apple I'd be happy to add to it? Anyone know of signing list of some sort?

I'm sure replacing an ipad screen yourself is crazy hard and expensive.
In the ideal world, it wouldn't be.

Add me to the list of people affected. Penny sized spot about 2 inches about the home button. Showed up out of nowhere. It’s out of warranty so I’m hoping Apple issues some sort of notice or repair bulletin.

Or, you know, you could start the ball and everyone else will "follow".

Anyone earlier in the thread, how have your replacements held up? There are some in thread who got replacements in early to mid 2018, be interested to know if these replacement's, newer manufacturer date have been ok?

Or what is the last reported date that has the problem? Maybe we can see when (or if!) It's ever been suspected to be fixed after a certain date.

Is the Air 3 ok now it's been out a while with this issue?

I've noticed a white spot develop on the display of my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 for a few months now. Tried to bring it into the Apple Store and they said it was normal, but a simple, generic google search of "ipad pro bright spot" / "ipad pro white spot" leads to numerous results which all converge to the conclusion that a white/bright spot in the display is developing on the 10.5 inch iPad Pros slightly above the home button. There are pages and pages of people with complaints of the issue on macrumors forums/reddit/apple forums/tech news outlets etc.

The fact that searching such a generic term narrows the results down to issues with the 2017 ipad pro 10.5 inch having bright spots all close to the home button shows that the problem may be more widespread than apple may realize and leads me to believe that it is a manufacture defect.

Does anyone know if apple has done any recalls on this issue / if macrumors could make an article about how widespread this issue is to draw some attention to the problem? Hopefully apple sees the attention the issue would receive and make things right for their consumers who purchased their pro device.

Just like the 10.5 has the bright spot, the 12.9 is having light bleed on the left side where the keyboard connector is. I have 3 light bleed spots on the left and Apple is charging me to get the entire device replaced some $600 or so. Horrible quality for a device which is prices through the roof.

It really seems like 10.5 and 12.9 are **** products.

This is normal with the pro. Mine started a few spots now it’s all down one side and screen is unresponsive half the time.
Get it replaced while u can on warranty.
I’m a month out and they won’t help me.

I'll probably use my AC+ within the last month and get a refurb one with a later manufacturer date to see if that does anything. Anyone with a 2019 date have any problems?

I have several bright dots lined up in close proximity approx. 1” above and several inches to right of home button on my 10.5” iPad Pro.

Not sure if they’ll show up in these photos or not, but if visible, is this in line with others’ issues?

The problem is so widespread that when you trade a 10.5 iPP at Best Buy one of the things they specifically look for is the bright spot. I know most people thumb their nose at trading in at Best Buy but they periodically have good trade-in values if you can keep an eye on them.

I've been lucky - have had mine about 2 years and no white spots. I use the 2018 12.9 Pro most of the time now but I still like the 10.5 for some uses.

Do a Google search on "iPad white spot" and you'll see that this issue has been written about in a lot of places for quite a while. Apple is absolutely well aware of it.
