Hi everyone... I own a iPad Pro 10.5", bought in December 2017, and a few weeks ago I start noticing something on the screen, especially while showing white background. Reading this thread I'm quite sure I am affected by the infamous "bright spot". TBH I have no complains in daily use, but I paid quite a lot of money for the device , and since the warranty is going to expire in one month , I'm thinking about a claim.
Is Apple going to accept it easily ? I don't want to fight a battle over a somewhat minor issue.
Yes. Do it ASAP before warranty is out. Be polite but firm, informing them that this is a known manufacturing defect as noted by extensive online reports with 1,000+ replies.

If it is the "bright spot" issue, it is far from a "somewhat minor issue". This is a defective product for which you paid a lot of Euros. It should be replaced with a new unit at no cost to you. I say "should" as I don't know what Apple's current practice is. It should not be legal to give people a refurbished item to replace a defective product which they purchased brand new. It should be replaced with a new unit. But...I am not an Apple shareholder or an Apple apologist, merely a consumer who expects fair, honest and transparent service from mega corporations.

no one is giving you a brand new device to replace an almost two years old device.
A good refurbished without the defect would be perfect.

Damn.

Amex denied my claim. They match the MFG, which since I didn't buy Apple care, would be a total of two years. Which ran out in June 2019, since I bought in June 2017.

I don't know what it would be if I had had gotten Apple Care.

Tempted now to just trade it back to Apple for pennies.

Might try one last thing.
Local repair shop might do it for me for less than the 450$ to replace.

Well, gave it a good try.

I’ve had this since I got mine on launch day. I’ve always meant to get it checked out as it’s annoyingly when reading ebooks, I just never got around to it. How do you check if Apple care is valid still?

Well, we get what we deserve, and if we continually accept poor treatment, guess what...it ain't gonna improve. But your standards may differ. Keen to hear what happens when you visit the Apple store.

Do they even make new 10.5" Pros anymore? They're discontinued. Apple refurbs have brand new batteries installed and I believe are even fitted with new outer casings. That seems like a pretty fair replacement for a 2 year old device.

Yours is expired by now.

For this model in particular, AC would be wise. Hopefully you wouldn’t need it but piece of mind given what we know

I did with my 11” Pro. I have never invested into Apple Care. Never thought it was worth it but with how fragile iPads are now, I’d rather have it. $5.99/mo isn’t bad anyway.

Would the bright spot be cured by changing the display? Just wondering if that is a cheaper option for those of us our of warranty

I am suspicious that the problem is caused by an expanding battery that is pressing on the screen from behind as my battery started to deteriorate at a faster rate a couple of weeks before I got the white spot. I’ve since had a replacement.
So if it is the battery, I’d say that it would need replacing too. I’d also wonder if just replacing the battery would fix the screen issue or if the screen has been permanently damaged, that is if it is caused by an expanding battery.

It’s far too widespread with far too many folks have no other issues for it to be a battery issue.

How do you know it’s not a battery design flaw?
Process of elimination. I think the poster above was pointing out that there doesn’t seem to be any correlation to the white spot and battery issues on these forums. I agree. A swollen, degrading battery would sorta make sense BUT no one with the white spot is complaining of sudden battery performance anomalies. Other than the poster above, it appears to be a separate concern.

🤦‍♂️

I'm half tempted to get an oem screen and replace mine since I'm out of options on this ipad.

B/c this is a VERY widespread issue and there are ZERO other indicators that the battery is the culprit.

When batteries expand, they generally continue to degrade and cause many other issues. That isn’t happening here.

my Air 3 has a very minor bright spot (more like a small zigzag) right out the box with a brand new battery. The explanation I’ve heard is that it seems to be a flaw in the lamination process of the displays on the 10.5” models that causes light bleed, and this makes the most sense to me.

Well it was worth raising that my battery appeared to have begun deteriorating just before the white spot appeared in case others had noticed that too. Seems to be unrelated according to feedback here. So that’s good news. My replacement is less than 3 months old and my screen is currently flawless. I’m hoping that it stays that way.

History isn’t on your side, but hope springs eternal.

A local fixer shop would do it for 250$. Tempted to do it myself.
Does anyone know of a source of quality OEM screens for the 10.5? I have read reviews on some serious duds. Maybe good replacement screens don't even exist for end user.

After comparing the 10.5 pro and new air I decided the pro had the better specs and took advantage of the curry’s black tag deal of £449 for a 256gb pro earlier today.

After stumbling on this bright spot problem on the web it sounds like every iPad pro 10.5 is getting this problem between 3-18 months of its lifetime. How true is that? - were any changes made to later manufacturing units?

Should I preempt and return/cancel order whilst I still have the option and get the iPad Air 3 or am I jumping the gun?

Also has the air 3 solved this issue for the most part?

Thanks

Well, 2+ years on, mine doesn't have it so "After stumbling on this bright spot problem on the web it sounds like every iPad pro 10.5 is getting this problem between 3-18 months of its lifetime" is not a truism.
