But who's going to initiate the class action suit? Questions about one keep popping up here but someone who cares enough has to initiate it and nobody has been willing to do it.
That won't happen unless the tech media picks up the story. (GateCon 8) When will that happen? When a blogger themselves or a family member experiences the issue.

I honestly think the ship has sailed on this issue with Apple. Nothing is going to come of it with them outside of handling individual issues on a case-by-case basis.

If this happened in cars there would be a product recall to rectify the problem irrelevant to the age of product.

so why does this not happen to iPads.

i have a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5” bought new in 2018 nov so not in warranty, I can shell out about £150 for a OEM replacement but if it’s a global problem why should I have too.

apple get your products in order as this was an apparent problem while they were still selling them, can’t tell me they did not know as they were replacing iPads under warranty with this problem.

Not really a good analogy - car recalls are made due to safety defects that can affect not just the owner but other drivers. Same is true with most other product recalls. Big difference between that and something like a white spot on a display. Issues like this are usually handled as repair/replace on a case-by-case basis by the manufacturer. The problem here is that Apple has chosen not to recognize this as an endemic manufacturing problem and hasn't issued a statement acknowledging it and providing a clear repair/replace policy.

I can't recall a time when an issue as widely reported on MR as this has been was shown to be "no big deal".

The reason why Apple hasn't done anything about it is because there haven't been any serious threats of a class-action lawsuit.

Apple cycle of dealing with issues

Current status: >> GateCon 7 <<

Here's the typical cycle for problems reported on Apple products:
1. A few members post reports of the problem, report it to Apple
2. No response from Apple
3. Increased number of people report the issue
4. No response from Apple
5. Apple apologists dismiss the reports as very rare, the result of trolling, or exaggeration by drama queens
6. Even more reports of the problem
7. No response from Apple <=== we are here
8. News of the problem hits blogs
9. Apple apologists dismiss the blogs as simply engaging in clickbait
10. No response from Apple
11. Those affected by the issue threaten a class-action lawsuit
12. Apple apologists decry the "sue happy" nature of American consumers
13. Apple acknowledges the legitimacy of the problem
14. Apple apologists are silent
15. Apple release an update to correct the problem
or
15. They set up a "program" to address the problem.
16. Apple gains some positive publicity
17. Apple apologists applaud Apple for doing the "right thing". (for an issue that they said from day-1 was not actually an issue)
18. First hand experience with the “program” reveals very strict guidelines and restrictions that greatly reduce the number of affected customers that can participate in the program.

Hahaha, this is so true! I use Apple since 2011, had at least 10 products and faced SO many hardware issues that were never fixed and got worse with every new model... we definitely need to find a well known journalist having white spots on the screen.

yeah the only way we can get help is through a journalist

thanks! thats a really good compilation...now all we need to do is combine some photos posted to this thread of the problematic ipads and put that together into a website and i think we'll have a full story about it. once the pictures and proof are all in one place, it'll be a lot more attractive for a journalist to shed light on this issue again since the info is all there and they don't have to dig and do research. the barrier to entry for the journalist is a lot lower.

I meant anyone opened the device? To check if it was a swollen battery for example? Could not find anything.

looking at the guts inside, it seems the logic board is in the middle where the spot shows up.

maybe the heat from the logic board causes that spot to brighten?

From recollection I think it is the WiFi chip or similar that is at the exact spot the white spot appears.

So, my local Kroger affiliate has brand new 10.5 IPP for 499.99 and 599.99 for 64 and 256 gb respectively.

Any of you 10.5 IPP owners still think it's time to buy one?

I personally wouldn't buy them at most any price.

I'm jaded though - I went through 4, 5, 6 (maybe?) replacements between December and a few weeks ago when I finally just sold the "new" replacement they sent me.

I could never get one that wouldn't start making a "pop" noise when scrolling depending upon how I would hold it where the bezels met the screen by home button/FaceTime camera.

I do appreciate, very much, how they kept replacing them, but the super quick turnaround, no questions asked, nature of it did make me think that it was maybe a "known problem" they just didn't want to own up about?

Depends on who you ask. Mine has been perfect for 3 years now.

I agree with this.
My uncle has one that he got right when they came out and it's been 100% perfect for him.

Me however - just got lemon, after lemon, after lemon.

Definitely YMMV on the 10.5's

I wish I'd never sold my iPP 9.7 that I had before the 10.5.
As it sits now, I don't even have an iPad as I'm not sure which direction to go.

I''m in the same boat, Turbineseaplane. Sold my old third get iPad and am using my MBP and my iPhone 8. Missing the immediacy of access for the bigger screened iOS device!

I'm thinking about trying out a Mini again as I was pretty casual with my usage and my iPhone is an SE (original - small one).

But - they are spendy for what they are (I think). I'm just sort of waiting and seeing where my whims take me on this for now. It's never a bad thing to have a tech reset, at least for me, so it's all good.

I also wouldn’t buy one. 500 for 3 year old tech with known issues. I’d sooner go to 800 in that case, as that also gets a storage upgrade to 128GB.

Brand new 2017 Pros in 2020 baffle me. Weren’t they discontinued when the Air 3 came out?

^----- It's a Kroger-supplied combo store with a camera/TV/computer department. I suspect they've had a stockpile of 10.5 Wifi-only models as a higher end offering and they got caught with not discounting them enough over time to deplete the stockpile prior to the 11 inch models and newer 10.2 and 10.5 (air) models being released.
