Sorry, I'm an engineer by training (though now retired after 40+ years) and forum posts are not real data supporting a conclusion such as yours.

And I have read the entire thread and I have had a 10.5 for 2.5 years without any problems.

Will Apple do a battery replacement service on an out-of-warranty iPad with this issue?

The answer was no. Normal battery service declined because of hardware damage. Was asked to pay £426 for a repair.

So the battery was swollen and pressing against the display and they refuse the battery service? 🤨

So a degree in engineering acquired in the 1970's makes you an expert in determining how many people may have this problem with their iPad?

No, but it means I can evaluate a statement like "The iPad Pro (10.5 inch), sold in 2017 and numbered model A1701, will very likely fail you" made based on forum posts as being bogus.

lol you're taking that statement way too literally. its obvious that we'll never be able to know the true severity of the issue without knowing exactly how many 10.5 inch pros Apple sold, and without knowing exactly how many people have this bright spot issue. you wouldnt need any degree to figure that out if you had those exact numbers, let alone an engineering degree.

what he meant by that point was that the fact that there's a decent number of people who have reported having a similar issue on this forum with the exact same device proves it is an obvious manufacturing defect and not mishandling of the device.

I have the issue with the bright spot on the 10.5. My solution was to buy an 11 and give the 10.5 to my wife who has not idea its there. Problem solved.

Yeah, I forgot that the forums are the realm of hyperbole.

You cheeky bugger. Hahah love it!

I had my white spot 10.5 pro repaired under an extended warranty on my CC. I actually felt bad for my CC company if you can beleive it after Apple Store woulnt budge. Sold the replacement and bought an 11Pro last year.

Still feel like Apple’s good guy rep is all a facade. Was a huge fanboy for their products before that. They lie to your face and tell you, “I’ve never seen this issue before”. You litterally want to scream and freak out in the middle of the store when they say it.

Just a followup for everyone. I had this issue a while ago. I was out of warranty with Apple. Didn’t get AppleCare+, but had third party insurance. Took my 10.5 IPP to the Apple Store to get a repair quote that I could use as evidence to get the defect covered with my insurance. When I showed the Apple employee the bright spot, he ran a “diagnostic” that indicated I had a problem with battery swelling and replaced it with a refurb on the spot (no pun intended), no questions asked.

I’ve had this refurb for one year, use 30w fast charging all the time, and have zero spots.

If you havent tried taking it to the apple store, you should. May get lucky!

How has the iPad Air 3 (10.5”) faired with this problem?

I’m wondering wether to get one under the Uni deal for kids and get AppleCare+ with it. You also get AirPods as part of the deal.

Currently have a Pro 10.5” and have the keyboard so save there. Apart from that it’s no different really.

Obviously be getting a new unit, with 2 years warranty on it. Would probably sell the 10.5” ?

Thanks

I purchased a 2nd gen 12.9” IPP in March 2018, and by May 2019 had a series of bright splotches like everyone is describing along the left edge of the screen. Apple swapped it out with zero questions, but also gave no indication what the problem was. now, almost like clockwork, I’m having the same problem with the replacement. I have an appointment to bring it in Sunday and hav ether look at it, but if they try to charge me for repair that’ll a big “no thanks” from me.

I think its their obsession with thinness. Just cramming so much and hot glue everything in place. The screen is then jammed right on top of it all and with heat and time the screen just starts to distort and fail.

I had a 10.5 pro with this, sold it after getting it repaired and then got a 11pro last year. I think that'll be the last one for me for at least a couple more years. The quality has really dropped on Apple products imo

I have the spot/shadow on mine but it never really bothered me that much like when I'm using it in a very dark room. I thought it was just oil from my hands being magnified but I guess not. My new 11 will be here tomorrow hopefully so the 10.5 will find a new owner.

Good luck!
I experienced the same spots and light bleeding with replacement of iPad Pro 12.9". Went a couple of times to Apple Stores (the 90 day warranty on the replacement ended long ago) and was always denied a new replacement. They wanted me to buy a new iPad for like $900 or so (trading in my current one for cheap).

Yeah, the quality started dropping around year 2013. And now there are just too many problems with all their stuff including iPads and MacBooks. I was an Apple fan, now it feels their hardware is too overpriced considering the quality,

Had a 10.5" iPad Pro with this issue replaced under AppleCare+ early this year for this issue.

I have a Genius Bar appointment to have the replacement checked tomorrow.

It clearly a failure mode of some type with this model over time.

It doesn't hamper operation, so if I didn't have AppleCare+, I wouldn't bother.

This is one of the reasons I am glad we are able to extend AppleCare + beyond 24 months now. I renewed my AppleCare last month after the 24 month warranty was up, no regrets for the peace of mind that this issue will be fixed should it occur again.

I was facing the bright spot on my 10.5 as well for over more than a year until last week the screen started to show lines across the screen and shaking icons all over the screen. It appeared a hardware issue according to Apple Amsterdam. And as I treat my iPad very well and it looked new after 3 years and 2 months it was replaced with a brand new one in the Apple Store. A very good service of Apple Amsterdam I must say. So, lines and bright spot gone. iPad is rocking again! :). I will watch closely how the spot will behave in the coming months.

they did this for u without applecare?

Yep! They did! :) Main reason for the free of charge swap was that my iPad did not have any sign of use (no scratch or anything). So happy that I gave it a try to go back to the Apple Store.

That's really good service. I think the EU Apple Stores are more aware now of consumer protection laws that mean they can be liable for products long after the contractual warranty expires.

My 10.5 is having this issue and Apple says that they don't have a quality program for this. Since it is out of warranty, I would have to pay roughly 70% of the retail price for it to be replaced.

Anyone else?
