looking at the guts inside, it seems the logic board is in the middle where the spot shows up.
It might be a thermal problem from the chip changing the LCD chemistry.

My 10.5 is having this issue and Apple says that they don't have a quality program for this. Since it is out of warranty, I would have to pay roughly 70% of the retail price for it to be replaced.

Anyone else?

Same here! They always want more money. I just stopped buying their devices long ago.

Yep! They did! :) Main reason for the free of charge swap was that my iPad did not have any sign of use (no scratch or anything). So happy that I gave it a try to go back to the Apple Store.
wtf... mine has been in a case day 1 and not a single scratch either... you got really lucky. congrats!

If that was the case, they wouldn't be supporting iOS devices for so long.

And they don't! My iPad's screen failed with light bleeding and touch failure and wasn't "officially" admitted by Apple as a valid support case. My iPhone was throttled so I had to switch it. MacBook Air now has a bright spot. What's the point of having a new iOS on a broken device?

They say that they do but they don't.

I was talking about software updates.

You can turn off the throttling in exchange for random shutdowns.

But they technically do? 🤨

And I'm talking about hardware & software, because Apple is the unique company that locks us within a particular combination of those two. So if your touchsceen fails in 2 years you cannot switch hardware or repair, only buy new from Apple. iOS 14 won't help. If you have bright spot on the screen - you're screwed. Have to buy new hardware again. iOS 14 won't help either. Also turning throttling off wasn't available back then (until a class action was filed). So my old iPhone became barely usable. New iOSs made it even worse.

So they say they do, but technically they don't.

I can imagine that it'd also be barely usable if it was shutting down randomly.

As for new iOS versions making performance worse, that probably more or less has to do with the aging of your battery. I have seen mostly positive reception when it comes to newer iOS versions on older devices.

Regardless, you're complaints are justified after having such a terrible experience. I hope your luck gets better sometime in the future.

No it's not about shutting down randomly, it's about iPhone throttling. Apple was caught doing that and we were lucky to have that class action lawsuit going.

No it's not about aging the battery. It's about the fact that any iOS version can't fix hardware problems - touchscreen failures, white spots and light bleeding.

I owned like, maybe 15-17 Apple devices in the past. Only one never had problems. Just look at it. A single device out of 17! I live in California, so it's not some kind of an isolated experience. And for example my friends' experience (who are living in South America) is much much worse. Fixing iMac problems is just a nightmare, they send it to US and it takes months and months.
New Apple quality sucks. That started around year 2013.

I'm trying to say that without the throttling, the iPhone would be shutting down randomly.

Well haha I don't believe in curse, otherwise all others who have problems with Apple hardware are cursed more or less. This is a very unrealistic explanation of constant problems with Apple manufacturing.

I was referring to you in particular. 😅

It still sounds like a bad excuse for Apple. There's no realistic way any kind of problems with the iPad (or any other computer device) could be explained by having a "curse". If you're joking I don't get it, sorry. iPad having problems means failures in manufacturing process.

Wait, you didn't even know that I was joking? 😳

I think a class action lawsuit wouldve made sense a few years ago, but there's no way we could possibly make enough noise.

I think the time for class action is right now! There are more and more people having this issue. We just need a critical mass.

Why don't you initiate one? It keeps coming up here - there ought to be a class action lawsuit! But nobody does anything. I searched just this single thread for "lawsuit" and found 43 posts with it.
