^----- It's a Kroger-supplied combo store with a camera/TV/computer department. I suspect they've had a stockpile of 10.5 Wifi-only models as a higher end offering and they got caught with not discounting them enough over time to deplete the stockpile prior to the 11 inch models and newer 10.2 and 10.5 (air) models being released.

Sounds about right.

I frequent a few Fred Meyer's (Kroger) and their electronics department is a mystery to me.

The prices are absurdly high and the sales they have are always pathetic (usually like 2-4% off) and, as of last Fall, they no longer price match any local stores.

The inventory of Bose and Apple products literally all just sit there getting older and never selling - ever. I actually had a chat with the guy at the counter one time about it. At the time (last year) he'd worked there for 5 years and never sold a single Bose or Apple product.

Why have any of it?
I don't get it.

Just a few days ago I noticed they had about 15 iPod Touches behind the glass - all at MSRP.
Good luck ever selling those off....and they just keep getting older

Yep. It's Freddies.... So, still 100 dollars off on their IPP 10.5 64GB and 256GB wifi models. Some other models have a smaller discount.

My guess: Kroger/Freddies wants to be known as an Apple dealer, but doesn't get much of a break on their manufacturer pricing (cost) from Apple. Therefore, they don't do much discounting and can't react successfully at time to clear out stale inventory.

This is so f*cked up that Apple would do this to us loyal customers

Vote with your money. I personally stopped buying Apple a year ago or so (loyal user since around 2011). There are a lot of alternatives nowadays. And a lot of companies stand behind their customers (unlike Apple).

we need macrumors to bring light to this issue. or at the very least, get a youtuber to check their treasure trove of old tech they reviewed to see if the bright spot has developed

This is my one year old replacement 10.5” iPad Pro... Not just the bright spot but the entire bottom of the display too. Also, battery is 85% remaining capacity with just 220 cycles.

I have an early 10.5 and I just got the bright spot, actually two bright spots. One 2" up from home button and another not quite as bright one about 3" to the left of the first bright spot. This was not a cheap device so it is very discouraging to experience something like this. Warranty is long gone of course.

Here is the “decorative” white spot on my 10.5 11 inch pro. I think this is the typical one...about 2 inches above home button. There are a couple of additional white spots (smaller and much fainter) that are beginning to appear about mid way in the screen.View attachment 901918
Pretty much the same as mine except my spots are slightly larger.

I just noticed this spot, on my 10.5". It is in the same location, too. I thought I might have damaged it, accidentally, but I have already been very careful and keep it in a case and sleeve. My Apple warranty is also gone, as I bought it near launch.

Well, I went ahead and added AppleCare+ (monthly) now that my 2 year applecare (purchased with the Original 10.5 iPad) expired The other day. That should cover me should this issue crop up (again), or I accidentally damage the iPad when on the road (again).

It’s nice that at least we can now go monthly (past 2 years) with AppleCare+, although I would prefer a fix/replacement plan outside of an extended warranty. The trick will be to remember to cancel the insurance once it makes no economical sense to get a replacement 10.5” vs a newer iPad.

Will Apple do a battery replacement service on an out-of-warranty iPad with this issue?

Do not buy the 10.5 iPad Pro. And if you ever have an issue with an Apple product, deal with it ASAP. If you can’t get to a store, call or chat. Get on the record. It didn’t help me, but it might help you. Don’t procrastinate like I did.

tldr

I paid full price for 256GB Wi-Fi version on July 15, 2017, and had the spot show up almost exactly 1 year
later. Fortunately I was able to get mine swapped for free, once, on July 11, 2018 due to this issue.

But then it happened again to the replacement, 9 months later, So I made a Genius Bar appointment for March 24, 2019. For a million reasons I won’t mention, I couldn’t get to an Apple Store, so I kept rescheduling that appointment. Kept rescheduling it weekly, for months. I figured if I could at least show I had problems so soon after getting it replaced, they’d swap it when I eventually could get in to a store. My thinking was that this was obviously a defective product suffering from repeat issues, and in the exact same location on the display right? They stand behind products for years if there are clear defects. I was wrong.

Long story short, I couldnt get to a store, and then time happened, and then the pandemic happened. And now it’s June 30, 2020. i just came from an Apple store where I was having my iPhone battery replaced. When I made that appt, I took a shot and made an appointment for my iPad also. While my iPhone battery was being swapped, I showed them the iPad & explained myself. I showed them the original work authorization & the kid talked to a manager. He basically said I had waited too long. That there was no was to classify it in their system that would justify swapping it. Only option was to pay display repair price. No. Way.

My fault for not taking it back immediately. But this sucks. I have iPad 2s, & iPad 4s laying around with no display issues. Even an original iPad. They’re slow and were handled more harshly than this 10.5, but the displays on all my old devices are fine. The most expensive iPad I‘ve ever bought is defective and I have no recourse now. It’s a gorgeous display and I’m so bummed because it’s impossible to unsee.

For the record… The genius said something about trying to adjust the display settings and I told him that I tried everything, but if he had something I hadn’t thought of it please try it. His advice was to “just use dark mode“. That kind of made me angry. He was very professional and very nice and I was happy with my battery appointment, and it’s years later, but when he told me his manager suggested I just use dark mode, it flustered me so I picked up my iPhone and came home to write this.

The iPad Pro (10.5 inch), sold in 2017 and numbered model A1701, will very likely fail you.

Where is the real supporting data behind "The iPad Pro (10.5 inch), sold in 2017 and numbered model A1701, will very likely fail you", i.e. where is real failure rate data?

Same with mine. My 10.5 iPad got the bright spot after a year too. I don’t buy Apple care for my products so I couldn’t do much. It’s annoying to see considering how much it costs and it’s clearly a defect with the stories in this thread. I bet there’s many more but the regular users aren’t coming to Mac rumors to look for answers.
