A few pics of my new 2015 15" -- 😍
You'd legit think it just came out of the box from an Apple Store in 2015 -- wild!

I think once the final iOS 17.X comes out (and is smooth/stable) I'm gonna stick with it and only install the security updates until the final version of iOS 18 comes out. No reason to jump onto buggy major releases anymore.

How do you plan to only install security updates for iOS? Is that possible? I know Apple will once in a blue moon release something for an older OS, but that is very rare, or has something changed?

I do think that moving away from Intel to ARM was a good call on Apple’s part. One thing I am watching is Windows on ARM. Right now you can get a dev kit from Microsoft that is essentially an ARM Mac Mini like device with 32gb of memory for $699. It uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 gen 3 cpu which is okay, but not great. When they have one with the Snapdragon X Elite it will be more on par with the M3 more or less.

Can you give me an example of something to be worried about?
We had a long history of "no SIP even being a thing", with no issues, so I'm curious

(like to weigh the options and learn a bit here... thx)
SIP is that bulwark against malware gaining a beachhead on your system by preventing it from modifying system files and folders. By turning it off, you lose the last line of defence. Any piece of software that requires you to turn it off is messing around with system-level files and you never know if it's just custom themes or something else.

If the current Dock bugs you that much, go for it. I'm OCD about certain things myself so I understand. But my computer is too important for my work now that having to reinstall macOS or set up Boot Camp again isn't an option.

Nope! That's the first thing I noticed when I picked it up
I got a little chill inside when I realized "wow ... this thing is basically unused"
I bet no matter how much you use the keyboard it won't get shiny keys like the new MacBooks after two weeks you have nasty looking shiny keys.

Spenk 5k on a laptop and a month later the keyboard looks like 3 years old??

The older MacBook pro and MacBook didn't have this issue and the keyboard felt better to type on too. It looks basically new. Did it still have the plastic wrap? If it isn't new it was barely used and stored properly. These are wonderful finds.

It is pretty sweet. I would just run what is on it. Maybe update the latest version of what came with the Mac.

Should be fun to play with!

This is a fascinating discussion 🥰

I was late to join the Apple garden. The iPhone 6s was my first Apple product, (still my main phone). Then I got an iMac 21.5" 2015, to see if I would like macOS. The iMac was not great, but I loved macOS.

I started with a Pentium II PC, running windows 95. I loved Win2000, but used SuSE 6.2 most of the time.
I dropped linux when SuSE 9.0 launched. And I didn't upgrade beyond Windows 7.
Built my last PC in 2012. I also built a few servers using Tyan motherboards with dual opterons, in 2006-2007.

I got Windows 10 last year, with bootcamp on my Mac Pro 7.1. And I use Monterey on my iMac Pro, and Mac Pro.

Thank you all. I am learning quite a lot from reading your comments

Apparently it was purchased alongside an iMac for an older gentleman, and he ended up just using the desktop basically all the time, and never really touching this thing.

Truly a gem. And for $180!

Popped my NVMe stick in from my other 2015 right into this and I’m up and running without a hitch

This is flexibility that an Apple Silicon machine can’t even dream of. This is how computers should be.

For all my complaints about PC's and Intel specifically over the years the modularity of PC's has always been a strong point. And the ability to use whatever hardware you want with the OS.

Just imagine for a moment if you could down and install MacOS like Windows on any device you want? I actually wrote about this when Microsoft still charged for the OS and my argument was Apple could make even more money licensing the OS out to individuals to use on any compatible hardware. At that time Apple was on Power PC.

Now the hakintosh movement has grown but what if there was an official download of MacOS and drivers available to run on x86?

I mean if I could run MacOS on my Spectre that might be a really cool option. If you could run Apple apps on Android. And imessage was fully compatible with Google messages think of how many more people would be using Apple software??

I think if Apple adopted a Microsoft strategy and kept selling their own hardware like the Microsoft surface line but opened up the OS to all OEM's and opened up iOS I think the money Apple could make would be enormous. How many staunch Windows users might try MacOS if they could dual boot?

Apple could continue doing what they are doing with their hardware and tight integration and optimization as a selking point over other OEM.

They would make money both ways. Of course it would hurt Apple hardware sales but they would more than make up for it with licensing fees.

The problem is that the hackintosh movement has kind of dried up and blown away with the transition to the Apple Silicon. But back in the day, that's kind of how it was. You bought off a predetermined list, but then it worked great! I could dual boot my gaming machine into Mac and Windows. It was fantastic.

Sounds great! Wish we could do something like that officially through Apple but I know it will most likely never happen.

If we have a MacBook with an Oled screen and touch on MacOS on M5 or something might be enough to pull me back in.....Lol.

Some people who have made nice contribution's to this thread have suggested I at least keep a Mac in the mix. I think that is probably where I may go. I am thinking of a mac mini with M2 once M3 is announced and sales go deep. It is cheapest way for me to be in the MacOS interface which is what I enjoy most in all honesty anyway. Just use it as a stand alone. I was also thinking of an M3 iMac but those are so pricy but so beautiful. I am going to wait some time since I have already made the transition. But I think a Mac Mini during the Christmas sales or Black Friday sales at Best Buy might just be the perfect time. If I could get a Mac Mini with 16gb ram and 256gb ssd or 512gbssd for around $600 or so that would be perfect. I also might just buy an base M3 mac mini when they come out for what $599 or so?

I have never had a Mac desktop. I have always had laptops. I have had many Windows desktops over the years and actually assisted people with their Mac desktops as IT support but never owned a Mac desktop myself. I think one desktop would be nice. Or maybe a used iMac. I know a lot of people like the 27" but I don't care since I am used to laptop screens. 24" would be huge to me. Lol. Buying used would also be as suggested by others on the thread not contributing to Apple's bottom line. So I will consider options I just am wary of used electronics. I don't always get a perfect like new mac like Turbineseaplane!!!

BTW Turbineseaplane, that Mac could become collectable in the condition it is in. I don't know how those things work but you hear about a certain vintage Mac or iPhone go on same for serious money and your Mac there is certainly a contender given it's age and condition and having Intel processor.

Apple doesn't release security updates for older iOS versions to devices that support a newer major version. Only devices that are on their last supported major version receive further security updates. They want you to install the newest supported major version.

I was debating this, but then I realized I have to have the windows gaming laptop either way, for gaming and my dev work. So now that all my stuff is cross-platform (Went from DevonThink to Obsidian, etc.,), why even bother? I end up trying my iPad again then and now I am back to 55,000 devices.

It would be different if I could combine my iPad Pro 12.9" with my Macbook Pro 13", but I can't. So having just my Surface Pro 9, 16" Acer gaming laptop, and my iPhone as my only devices is really nice.

And when I travel for work, I can connect my smart card to my Surface Pro 9 and literally travel with just the one device. So nice.

Umm are you sure about that? iOS 16.7.6 just came out as a security update.

@eltoslightfoot if they ever allowed macOS on an iPad that would become my one and only Apple computing device other than my phone I think

Even my time with an iPhone might be limited if there ever becomes a small option that’s reasonable in any ecosystem I’ll likely be interested
RIGHT???????????????????????? It's just sitting there and they won't do it.

It’s totally maddening, because forever there is a technological reason we couldn’t have that and now it’s simply a business decision they are making.

We absolutely could have an iPad that does it all and you can just plug into a monitor and keyboard and stuff when you want to

Apple adopted a lot of surface pro like stuff but they kept the OS gimped. I think that was their biggest mistake with the Pro line. Who cares if it cuts Mac sales if you can sell top end iPads and all the accessories?? They would probably make more money on the Pro Ipads that had a full OS than how they do things now??

It is things like this that I just scratch my head??

If a Samsung phone can use Dex to have fully functional windows then iPad OS could use a version of MacOS with touch enabled and some tweaks to make MacOS more touch friendly. The ironic thing is MacOS is already adopting a more iOS interface so it doesn't make sense to do that on a non touch optimized device????

We have a couple of 2006 era mac pro desktops running Final Cut Pro703, all 3 have little red counters saying updates available, we have tried connecting, it never does, we have tried manual downloading, everything is up to date as far as we can go, the little counter reset, NO, as it seems that the website that checks is offline, or been renamed so that the code running Mountain Lion, has not been updated with the new address...
