False dichotomy.

2025 is the year of the linux laptop /s
I mean I know you were being sarcastic, but that is pretty much the only option if you don’t want to trust Apple or MS. And I get it. Personally, I trust Apple more than MS so here we are, but I completely get that trust is based on different ideas and concepts and each of these is relative to the person.

I know people that use Onedrive even though they scan your files or CSAM, for instance. Wouldn’t be me.

I know people that decide that Apple is jacking up RAM and SSD and so refuse to buy Apple. I get it, and it is frustrating, but it wouldn’t be me.

I do wish Microsoft would go back to the way they were before all the tracking. Then I might be able to return to the fold, as it were.

With Assange being granted freedom, I delved back into what I gleaned from my freaking time. And reality is scary, moreso with AI being shoved in every nook and cranny.

That´s why I allow myself to remain more optimistic when looking at apple's approach (lightweight local models, offshoring with intent), than microsoft's.

I grew up with touchOS and OSX and spent alot of time deep within the ecosystem. I came to the realisation that I would never let myself be made captive by a single company. Even if that means sacrificing some convenience in the short term and spending time researching OSS alternatives.

The reality is that for the huddling masses for whom reflecting on those things is not something they can afford, the future seems dystopic as we continue further and further into shittification. How one can even browse the web without a robust ad-blocking solution is beyond me.

i realized while tying my shoelaces this morning before my ride that
 does have that hidden email feature, that we desperately need today!

this is an incredible feature!

Nice false dichotomy, I won’t even bother to explain how you’re totally missing out on the other group, those who are actually satisfied and never want anything to do with Android/Windows for GOOD REASONS.
Good reason #1 perhaps being that one's choice of platform has become so deeply ingrained in one's personality that they would name themselves "Mr<choice of computer platform>III" and blind themselves to any and all benefits of using a competing platform.

This is kind of what I just said in a different thread. OS is more important than hardware. And most people are honestly happy with what they have.

Very few are like me or the rest of the posters in this thread. I have an RTX 4060 Win 11 gaming laptop, M1 MBP, M1 iPad Pro 12.9”, and iPhone 15 Plus. I use it all. If Microsoft would honestly 100% commit to user privacy—including full encryption on Onedrive and user data, then I would probably get rid of the iPad and MBP.

But we both know they see user data as a primary requirement going forward….so here we are.

The new Nvidia driver 555 enables proper Wayland support for Linux. So I recommend CatchyOS as it comes with the 555 driver by default.

It’s only a matter of time before most privacy and tech minded users move to Linux. It respects the user.

2024 the year of the Linux Desktop! :D

I kid, I kid. Although to be fair, I haven’t used Linux since I left a sysadmin job in the mid aughts. Back then you had to specify your hard drive parameters (cylinders, etc.,) just to install Red Hat Linux. I got an iBook with OSX and that was “Linux-y” enough since it was based off BSD.

Haven’t looked back…much. Now with Apple’s approach to AI, I probably won’t have to. Seems fairly private. Devil will be in the details though.

Problem is Apples policies change or are influenced by monetary gains. The most privacy minded OS is the one that is open source, you fully have the right.

I remember that. lolz. and the days of telnetting to a server and using Lynx to browse the web.

When I used OSX for the first time and I realised it took care of the technical config behind the scene for me.

That was the moment I became an old man.

ha, Old Man ;)

I'm primarily OSX Mac OS on the daily, but I still interface with linux ad hoc (a few time/week, and sometimes for education).

My EdgeRouter 4 (basically) runs Debian, as do my Prox virts . . . I am not a fan of sD, but what's a guy to do?

Oh, yeah . . . live Mac OS on the Desk ;)

Well, open source has been proven to have its own security issues, but yes, you are correct.

That said, I trust Apple so far. They have basically gone all in on privacy as their overriding concern. They are the only ones that allow me to encrypt my user data with Advanced Data Protection. Their AI has the potential to be the most private—and I can even just not use it if I want.

Try to get the same deal with Microsoft. It ain’t happening.

Eh, the more I think about this, it still requires me to have a high level of trust with Apple. While I can't find anything overt with regard to violating the tenets of their privacy philosophy, they do continue to have an ads program, and they are adding ads to Apple TV+.

The more I think about this, Microsoft Windows at least lets me see "behind the curtain" and disable anything I don't like (such as recall). Plus with the large install base, it is easier to know professionals will come up with tools that make it easier to deal with the OS in the first place.

Especially going forward in a world where everyone has AI.

I more or less used MacOS, Windows and Linux simultanous since the mid 90s.

What have been used to what have varied, but since 2008 it has been:

Work: Linux
Private: Mac
Games: Windows

To me 2008 was kind of a peak-Mac. MacOS were simply the most compatible OS around. I triple-booted my macpro 3.1 into all three OS. There were lots of compatiblity tools around.

Now i feel the Walls coming up higher and higher on WIN and MacOS.

I would probably moved to Linux long ago if it was not for the hundreds of hours it will take to transfer my immense media collections into a similar nice structure with intact meta data.

20k hires photos: Lightroom.
3k ripped dvd/br: dvdpedia
3k ripped CDs: audirvana
150k emails: Mail (on disk)

It took me a couple of months, and lots of frustration, last time I managed to transfer my mail from windows to mac.
