Just came back from 10 day vacation only to power on my 2010 5,1 Mac Pro to run into this same problem due to my NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN X.
I can walk through a lot of these solutions, but unfortunately I'm still stuck on 10.12.6 Sierra.

Is there a link to any decent walkthrough on reliably upgrading from 10.12.6 to 10.13.6 High Sierra at this point? Can I simply download the update from the app store and go from there? I want to make sure I take any necessary precautions.

I'd clone my sierra disk to whatever and try the updates on the clone. Even an old spinner is sufficient for a test run. Don't forget the 2020-005 and 2020-006 security updates to get to the latest sub-version of High Sierra.

EDIT:
To revert the changes (if/when a proper fix is available), you will need to...
  1. Open Terminal, type sudo nano /private/etc/hosts and press "Enter"
    • I use Nano and forget what the default editor in Terminal is
    • If you don't have Nano, I think vim is most likely the default.
  2. Delete the ocsp lines; then save and close
  3. Run sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder && sudo reboot in Terminal to refresh the DNS cache and reboot
@Dayo , I used your early fix for a few weeks (thank you!) and now am trying to revert back. I don't have Nano and ran all your Terminal commands, but I'm not sure if it worked. Two questions:

1. We're just supposed to delete ocsp lines, and leave the ocsp2 lines alone, right?

2. After rebooting, I expected my Mac to not load the Nvidia driver properly again, but the Nvidia drivers loaded fine on 17G14033, so I'm wondering if I did something wrong... Is there some way to tell if I have successfully reverted my system back to the way it was before the workaround?

Not sure why you think that since ocsp2 is an "ocsp" item that you added earlier and you therefore need to remove it to revert.

Is there some way to tell if I have successfully reverted my system back to the way it was before the workaround?
Simple, open the hosts file and make sure the "ocsp" lines added are no longer there.

As there is a cache purge step involved, the CRL cache will be empty and the issue will not manifest until the cache is refreshed.

I don't have Nano and ran all your Terminal commands
I would have thought it would be clear from the context that nano is an editor which would open the file for you to then delete the lines. If you don't have nano, then use the suggested default editor there. Do a web search on how to delete lines and save files in that editor.

EDIT:
Alternatively, just run the script from Post 461 and select the option to deactivate the workaround. This also reverts for the Post 82 approach as well as the steps based on this posted by Eierftucht.

Okay here's the system report before the crash. I'm actually using the board and monitor now I had to unplug the screen briefly so this is progress at least I just wondered what had gone wrong... Thanks all. Sorry it's a bit long.

Hello, after weeks of watching this thread and the incredible support of the contributors, I am going to attempt to install the updated drivers. I have read the post detailing the uninstallation of CUDA. Is there a similar post I have missed to uninstall the display drivers also? Obviously, none of the Nvidia panels/uninstaller will open. So is there a terminal procedure like the CUDA procedure for uninstalling the Nvidia display drivers? TIA & so much appreciation for the folks in this thread and their hard work!

Nvidia successful installed after 005 and 006 security updates.

View attachment 2020816View attachment 2020815

005 and 006 security updates installed with the Radeon 5770 still installed.
Swapping out the ATI Radeon for The GTX 1080 Ti was my final action.

My workflow is described below.

Hello All. I just joined moments ago to thank each and everyone of you.
I've been following this thread for weeks. You're a dedicated, talented and impressive group.
More power to you all.

I'm currently back up and running on my GAINWARD Geforce 1080Ti from macvidcards thanks to you all.
I tip my hat.

I followed the post #662 with some deviations due to my specific machine.

I could not safe boot with the shift key nor could I safe boot with the terminal. No safe boot.

I have to hold down the option key on the chime every time my Mac starts as a result of a bootcamp problem last year.
This I believe prevented me from accessing safe mode I think.

Regardless it all worked out as I'm up and running again on my Nvidia card.
Please not I also have my old ATI Radeon 5770 in during this entire process and only swapped it out for my 1080Ti at the very end.

Here is what I did as I hope it may help others.

1. I couldn't safe boot at all as I described above but I went ahead anyway in normal mode.

2. I manually uninstalled all the Cuda and Nvidia files I could find. I also used cCleaner and App Cleaner & Uninstaller. They found extra files.

3. I was on 10.13.6 (17G14019) on my Mac Pro (Mid 2010). So I installed Security update 005 first. This took 45 minutes. Upon successful installation I was now on 10.13.6 (17G14033).

4. I then installed security update 006. This took a further 40 minutes. Upon reboot I was now successfully in 10.13.6 (17G14042). Please note my booting problem is now resolved. I now no longer need to hold down the option key upon the chime during start up. Thank you updates.

Remember the ATI Radeon is in the entire time.

5. I installed the Nvidia driver posted on this thread. (No GPU detected) as the ATI Radeon is installed.

6. I installed the CUDA driver.

7. I shut down the Mac Pro. Took out the ATI Radeon. I then installed my Geforce 1080Ti. I hit the power button and she booted up into dual monitors with no problems.

I hope this will help others. Thanks a million again.

I'll keep in touch of any further developments or not.
Basically I'll let you know its all good and there is nothing to report over the coming days and weeks.
Does anybody know if there is a way to get this fix to work on an Early 2008 MacPro?? I can't install the 006 Security Update..... or is there another fix that works best for a 2008 Mac?

So is there a terminal procedure like the CUDA procedure for uninstalling the Nvidia display drivers? TIA & so much appreciation for the folks in this thread and their hard work!

Here you go. Refer back to this post:

So for those coming in now to find a resolution try these steps:

1. Download the GPU & CUDA Driver combo FullerFun shared in post #602: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...idia-webdrivers-anymore.2346445/post-31186645

2. Boot into Safe Mode by holding SHIFT during the boot up process.

3. Open System Preferences.

4. Open "NVIDIA Driver Manager" to uninstall your existing GPU driver. If "NVIDIA Driver Manager" preference pane opens proceed to step 5. If not go to step 6.

5. Once you enter "NVIDIA Driver Manager" preference pane, on the lower right hand corner you will find the "Open Uninstaller" button. Click that, and follow its instruction to uninstall your GPU driver. Proceed to step. 8.

6. If you get an error message asking you to reinstall the driver, then it means that the certificate is revoked and macOS is unable to load the associated files. You will have to manually uninstall your GPU driver (proceed from step 7 for that).

7. Open Terminal (found under "utilities" in your applications folder) and run the following commands to manually uninstall GPU driver:

(a) pkgutil --expand /Library/PreferencePanes/NVIDIA\ Driver\ Manager.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/NVIDIA\ Web\ Driver\ Uninstaller.app/Contents/Resources/NVUninstall.pkg /tmp/foo

(b) sudo /tmp/foo/Scripts/postinstall 0 0 /
(c) Enter your password when prompted. Wait for the process to complete.

8. Uninstall your existing certificate revoked CUDA drivers.

(a) Here are some typical CUDA driver uninstallation steps. You will have to run these commands in Terminal (found under "utilities" in your applications folder):

How to remove CUDA driver:

Type each command in the Terminal (when prompted enter your password):
  • sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/CUDA.kext
  • sudo rm -rf /Library/Frameworks/CUDA.framework
  • sudo rm -rf /Library/LaunchAgents/com.nvidia.CUDASoftwareUpdate.plist
  • sudo rm -rf /System/Library/StartupItems/CUDA
  • sudo rm -rf /usr/local/cuda
How to remove CUDA preference pane:
  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Right-click on CUDA.
  3. Click Remove CUDA Preference pane.
(b) Refer to the "uninstall" notes, which are contained in the "installation guide" for your respective version in the archive here: https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-toolkit-archive

For example, for version 10.2 this is the link: https://docs.nvidia.com/cuda/archive/10.2/cuda-installation-guide-mac-os-x/index.html#uninstall

(c) Or search on Google for an appropriate tutorial to manually uninstall your CUDA driver. (What I have observed is that any driver (GPU or CUDA) once their certificates are revoked, their respective uninstallers--which might have been installed during the past installation process--might not work. You have to go about the process manually using terminal and/or finder, or a combination of both.)

9. Install the GPU & CUDA Driver combo downloaded in step-1.

10. Reboot (into normal mode)

11. Most likely everything should work fine.

Enjoy!

THANK YOU to all who have run this problem to earth, especially Ashok.Vardhan. My 5.1 with nvidia was all but unusable, but thanks to the information and postings here, I'm back in business. THANK YOU ALL AGAIN!!

Does anybody know if there is a way to get this fix to work on an Early 2008 MacPro?? I can't install the 006 Security Update..... or is there another fix that works best for a 2008 Mac?
HiSierra is not supported on MacPro3,1 and you must have implemented some measures to apply any Security Update. You need to apply the same measures to 006.

I genuinely do not. Sorry.

I might suggest emailing MacVidcards by chance.

OMG! I struggled with this exact problem "out of the blue" with my 1080ti on High Sierra (latest build 17G14042). The 1080ti is no EFI, complete blind flight, glad I had a MacBook for swapping SSD all the time. I also dig into OpenCore and was finally able to boot - but without HWAcceleration and glitches (especially in Chrome). Took me weeks with different approaches, sadly a HS reinstall before I find this topic in here - but finally I just loaded the drivers from post #602, installed them without any of the forementioned solutions (no blocking, no kext-ing, no deinstalling, no safe mode) AND IT WORKS! Thank you so much all people involved and those who got in touch with NVIDIA.

I now clone my old system partition and just apply those drivers - just to see if they can handle an dirty, full production and at least 5 years untouched HighSierra :)

Enable screen sharing, and use your MacBook to view what's happening on your MacPro in these "blind" situations next time when trouble pops up and blindsides you.

I had my old Apple EFI Radeon HD 5770 so used it on a different slot in parallel with the Titan-X Maxwell to trouble shoot, as well as using screen sharing.

So, I started to have some issues similar to when the NVIDIA Drivers security cert. expired. I started getting the "spinning wheel" during scrolling or moving between tabs. I decided to zap PRAM to see if it would help. After reboot and log in to home page, the Pref. Pane launched and the CUDA Pref. Panne came up showing 418.163 "update required." This wasn't there after I installed it initially. I relaunched installer and reloaded CUDA 418.163 but the same "update required" highlight appears, yet nothing happens when I click on "CUDA Driver Info & Updates" button.
Anyone else running in to this CUDA msg.? At least the "spinning wheel" hasn't come back as yet!

I did enable screen sharing (remote access - one of the first things to enable after new installation!) it reveals the Mac is working properly despite its all "blind" and lead to this NVDA Case...

Sadly - since we moved to another country - I had my Radeon R9 not available here, must be left in the old house with my cMP quad :(

So I hope this will last for a longer time and do not occur again

I wonder what would happen if you pulled a boot drive from a 5,1 system and put it in your 3,1 now. If you have a 5,1/4,1 or have access to one I would make a clone of it onto an empty drive and then see if it works with your 3,1. It can't hurt anything.

Hello all,
I have
and when contacting Nvidia for the web drivers they replied that they do not have for this kind...

Has anyone found a workaround for this specific driver?
17G65 is the first version of High Sierra released July 9th 2018. There were about a dozen updates to High Sierra since then. NVIDIA is only supporting the very last version of High Sierra that Apple released. The one that is supposed to be the most secure. It makes sense that NVIDIA won't go to the trouble of making drivers for earlier, buggy versions of the OS, that even APPLE abandoned years ago. Update to the 13th and last version, by installing updates 5 and 6. That is the only way to get to "17G14042" released November 12th, 2020.

I would imagine that as long as the OS is officially supported on the older mac model on which you plan to install the macOS drive from the newer model, it should work fine.

I have a MacBookAir 7,2 (13" Early-2015) on macOS 10.13.6 (17G14042) which I used to make clean installs of bootable macOS drives on SSDs (using a USB-3 to SATA adapter cable) as external drives, which I then transfer (i.e. plug into) to my older MacPro 5,1 on the SATA connectors as the primary boot drive. Works every time for Mojave, High-Sierra.

Did this for Mojave to circumvent the necessity to have a Metal compatible mac EFI card (which I did not have at that moment as my WX9100 was not getting detected by macOS) to upgrade from High-Sierra to Mojave, and I had to fly blind. Since the installer will not proceed till it detects a Metal compatible card, there was no other way other than this method to check whether the WX9100 would work in a booted Mojave install or not.

Transferring these clean install macOS drives worked every instance from the MacBookAir 7,2 to the MacPro 5,1 since the macOS versions (i.e. Mojave, High-Sierra) were officially backward compatible between these specific models.

WOW. I'm glad I read this fiasco regarding Nvidia.
Do they plan on fixing this issue ?
Also Does anyone use Pro Tools and if so is the Web driver really needed?, I don't do any video, strictly audio.
THANKS
