Portland (OR) down at 9:00 AM, still down.

I called support, and was told (rather obviously) that it is a nationwide outage, with no estimate time of repair.

But, by complaining about both this and my 12-hour activation, I got a $16 credit to my next bill.

Although, if these issues keep up, I may cancel before the 30-day 'trial' period expires. (If you cancel within the first 30 days, you pay no early termination fee, just the activation fee plus one month service.)

Edit: To confirm, I am experiencing the 'E' showing I'm on the EDGE network, with full signal, in a place I had a good connection yesterday, yet have no data flowing now.

on again in bay area...

It was out since 10 am this morning. I noticed that the "E" sign for EDGE has to be enclosed in a blue box if EDGE is actually working. If it is enclosed in a white box, no use trying to download data.

EDGE Down

I am in San Mateo right now, and EDGE has been up and down all day. I wonder if AT&T made special arrangements for iPhone users to get a bigger allotment of data, but the load is just destroying them.

I agree, still no excuse, but it is good to see that so many people have the iPhone!

edge is now back up for me. I am located in millbrae, ca, which is about 10 minutes away from San francisco

Had this problem yesterday (E and full bars but no data service). Power cycled (held down power button, toggled red slider to turn it fully off) and it came back immediately.

EDGE was down for me this morning in Orange County, CA. Came back up for like 10 minutes and is down as of now.

UPDATE: Working now. Possibly intermittent.

Grrr... 2 days straight an no service here in Richmond, VA. Wi-fi doesn't work at home either (although my iMac works fine through the same connection). Stopped by a local AT&T store on my way home for work, the guy messed around for about 10 minutes and then gave up and told me one of my network settings must be misconfigured.

Funny, not really much to configure on this phone as far as network settings are concerned...

I still don't understand why this problem is only affecting certain phones - had two other people at work use safari on their iPhones right next to mine. WTF?

Just did a software reload, no dice...

Had the EDGE error today (Wilmington Island, GA). Was resolved on page reload, so it was only a few seconds or so. Got the pop-up box saying could not connect to EDGE network.

Still down in San Diego

Fellow San Diegan here, yes, Monday EDGE service was spotty at best, mostly just simply unavailable.

Do you know what it's like to go out to lunch with my fellow geek-IT co-workers to show off the 50 million dollar EDGE upgrade that happend over the past few weeks on my nifty new iPhone only to have it simply not work? They were looking up stocks and email while I was dead in the water. Yes, way to go, at&t.

Yeah, sure, half a million folks are 'new' to the system and playing around and crashing the service, they didn't 'expect' that, and it caught them off guard, we're sorry, it'll be up soon...like as IF Steve would let any iPhone out of the gate with, say, broken iPod glitches. Like someone said earlier, Apple is on the phone with at&t and I bet the conversation is NOT pleasant!

At least the WiFi interaction is flawless, so showing it off at work was a breeeze.

The problem for AT&T is going to be the quadrupling of todays traffic over the next few weeks as at least 10 people I showed iPhone to today at work are going to get one. It was quite fun to see the stunned looks, especially from the hard core M$ people...:)

Yeah, that's worth a quote. My co-workers knew I'd be getting one to bring in to work Monday, so the anticipation was high. I killed the battery by the end of the day - freely handing it around and watching folks just "getting it" - you know how when you show new technology you're usually telling them how to get from here to there? You don't have to with this - it just guides you along. All I had to do was to tell them the bottom button will always take you home, and that was about it. I sold a few iPhones today, that's for sure. The look on their faces (when it was on WiFi) was priceless.

i rebooted the phone (not sleep wake but the thing where you hold the button to turn it off) and it works as slow as ever.

Same issue: Phoenix/Scottsdale

I've been all around Phoenix and Scottsdale. Generally speaking, have 5 bars and the "E" (Edge logo). But sometimes the signal fluctuates beween 1 bar and 5 bars, when the phone is sitting on the desk, not moving. Most of the time, no matter where I am or how strong the signal is, can't pull up a web page or get mail. The dreaded "Could not activate EDGE". Strangely, most of the time, I can't use a Wi-Fi network either. It shows as connected, but can't hit any site.

Went to the Apple store today. They had no idea. But there was a guy there with the same exact symptoms. He had bought 2 iPhones -- one for his wife and one for himself. One of them was doing what I described above. The other one (in the same location) seemed to work ok.

So, the geniuses swapped out my phone for a new one. At the store, I could get some pages using Edge. Since then, same symptoms -- no love. But I did a sync in between, and who knows, maybe something gets munged when you sync? If it continues, I will try wiping out the device (all content and settings) and then see if it works clean again.

Hard to say whether this is a device or a network issue (I've had plenty of bad experiences in the past with Cingular), but I'm guessing that Steve Jobs wishes he controlled the cellular network too!

Troubleshooting Sequence

Okay, these are the things to try, in order, when you have these problems:

1. Reset the network/Edge services: turn on airplane mode for at least one full minute, then turn airplane mode off.

2. Power cycle the iPhone. Press and hold the sleep/wake button for about two seconds till the red slider comes up. Slide away. Wait for at least one minute before turning it back on. Press and hold the sleep/wake button until it comes on.

3. Do a soft reset: Press and hold both the sleep/wake button and the home button for about six seconds until you see the apple on the screen.

4: Reset the network using the menu: Home->Settings->General->Reset->Reset the network

5: Reset all settings: Home->Settings->General->Reset->Reset all settings

6. Erase all content and settings: Home->Settings->General->Reset->Erase all content and settings

7. Restore the iPhone software: Visit http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305744

Each of these does different things. I have ordered them by the amount of time and hassle that you will incur in the process.

Check your connection after each step and don't do any more after you get things working again.

You shouldn't have to start re-entering info until you get to the menu resets.

Good luck!

Those are good instructions to troubleshoot if you are having intermittent outages with the EDGE network. In my case, I’ve been completely out of the water since Saturday morning. Since then I’ve tried all the reset/reboot/reload options with no luck, not once since Saturday have I been able to access anything using Safari.

This is the same when connected via Wi-Fi (probably a good indicator that you are *really* broken since other folks out there seem to still be able to connect even when the EDGE network is having issues). If you are in the same boat as me, you need to call AT&T. This was the third time I called, and like the previous attempts, AT&T tried to pass me on to Apple. This time Apple refused to take the call (good for them), and instead I was transferred to a technical support representative at AT&T. They had me turn off my phone and they then apparently sent some network configuration data to my phone.

After the first reboot, it didn’t work, so the AT&T representative did some more stuff on the back end and had me turn it back on. Viola! Now it works like a charm…

Hope this helps the few individuals out there who have been completely SOL for the past few days…

No Edge in Miami

Apparently the volume of users has overwhelmed the system. Same situation when you try to use a cellular during a traffic jam. Steve Jobs should be furious because AT&T did not preempt this situation. They sold from 300,000 to 500,000 units the very first week, but with the EDGE problems the sales pace will slowdown at a rate well below the 200,000 units per week they need to accomplish the 10 million units mark in one year. Do not expect a remedy to this situation for several weeks from now. Both Apple and AT&T lack the needed experience to handle faster this unexpected situation. We can’t forget that Iphone is Apple’s first cellular and AT&T is the result of a recent mammoth merger. If your Iphone works well within your wireless network environment you should be happy, or you can return your Iphone until its prices are down to earth and the EDGE connection is up.

cannont connect to edge network...

The Hard stop worked for me...try pressing the sleep, and home button at the same time until the iphone turns off...mabie it works for you...:apple:
not really a mac guy, but the quality of this phone rocks...
