Been wondering about this.

No animal gets killed for leather.

So really it's a choice of lettiing their skin rot in the ground to be eaten by bugs, or making leather products out of it...

Not sure which one the dead cows prefer - if I had to take a guess, I'd say they don't really care. Since they're dead.

Also - please correct me if I am wrong - maybe there are animals that get killed for leather in which case, I'd be absolutely against it.
Cows are valuable down to the bone. No cows are being killed for JUST their leather.

Also apples leather cases will have naturally biodegraded over time, where these will lay at the bottom of a landfill and ocean until entropy has taken the universe.

Which version was it? My iPhone 11 leather case was pretty terrible, but my 13 has been pretty good. There are specks where the extremely thin leather has worn away, but overall its still in decent shape after a little over a year.

Responding to the overall theme, its easy to put this into two camps, one where we gleefully kill a cow for their skin, and the other where we are ensuring we use all of an animal after it has died. Apple isn't doing themselves any favors with their comments about saving the environment while not going all in either. I should have an option to get an Apple watch without a band if they really cared about the environment. They don't. If they cared about the environment, they'd also talk about all the features we are getting with the new OS on older phones, and give more options for trade ins on phones. My 13 Pro Max shouldn't be worthless to them if there is a scratch on the screen, but that's what Apples trade in page says.

Whats occurred here is an attempt to explain away a financial decision while not decreasing prices, and they've been caught using an inferior product. If they decreased the cost on a product which probably cost them tens of cents before, and now costs cents, people wouldn't be as annoyed.

My FineWoven case in Black arrived earlier this week. Very surprised to hear reports of cases looking frayed or damaged out of the box, mine looks perfectly fine. It looks and feels nice, although possibly not remarkable or noticeably next-level as is typical and expected from Apple products, but nothing to complain about yet. I'm also not torture-testing the case before I even get the phone to put in it.

Regardless, this case is just to to keep the phone from getting scuffed up until my Peak Design case arrives in October. I've had their case on my 12 mini for the past 2 years and it's awesome.

Considering leather is a byproduct of an already slaughtered animal, the only thing these stupid cases do is virtue signal to the five people who are vegans in the world.

What a misstep this is.

I'm all for getting rid of leather. The problem is that Apple decided they needed something novel to fill that premium price point. They just clearly didn't spend enough R&D effort on what that material should be.

Makes me relieved I accidentally made the right choice over my 15 case. I only picked silicone because I preferred the shade of the Storm Blue case over the FineWoven Pacific Blue.
So animal skin that’s gonna get discarded anyway is bad but the millions of plastic cases (made using petroleum (oil) )are good? Cool. Got it. 🙄

Wrong letter industry support meat industry, also there are dedicated leather production, so an entire life is taken for a cover or something crap.
Doubtful. Food is the original subscription based product, millions of tons of the stuff produced daily, whereas leather can last forever. Who would be ridiculous enough to harvest the skin and discard the meat?

Magsafe wallet: why nkt get your phone and wallet stole at the same time.

I love it, but I'm not brave enough to use it.

Does not seem like a good case. Maybe in the future, Apple will release a new case with a different material

You don't slap discarded meat skin on a product and call it leather. Tanning is a hideous process with all sorts of environmental cost.

I also didn't defend plastic as the way to go.

Guys, I believe you’re not getting the real reason Apple has ditched leather products.
Yes, it is a fact that leather is a byproduct of the abuses getting killed for meat.
The most negative impact on environment are the huge amounts of water needed to make leather usable for the products we know in the leather tanning process.
We’re already going through harsh times where we see frequent water shortage in several areas of the globe, so it is not advisable to keep wasting water that is crucial for human survival.
On the other hand, yes, the alternative Apple is offering seems not to be the best one so far. But that’s part of the process.
And remember this is not a war between the meat eaters and the vegans. It’s a bit deeper than that, and it has to do simply with rationally managing a very important resource for human life.

What is the cover's micro twill made of? Is it a synthetic textile?
It definitely has a layer of synthetic memory foam on the inside and outside under the fabric.

These things are horrible. They feel like something that has been pulled out of the $2 Kmart Bargain Bin.

Also, Apple had hundreds of leather cases available in their Brisbane store yesterday, today - not a single one. Looks like they're saving the environment by sending all of the leather cases straight to landfill and replacing them with these new synthetic ones.

How much water is used to make microchips? Or the sensors for 3 camera sensors? I don't see them reducing that.

There are also plenty of countries around the world where fresh water (clean enough to be filtered for tanning leather) is plentiful, where these could be manufactured. The whole world is not California.

Removing leather (which could last multiple phones if they kept the same dimensions), and replacing it with Polyester & memory foam glued to a plastic frame is not more environmentally friendly. This is all nonsense BS 'feel good' green-washing. People are getting a worse product under the guise of saving the environment - even though it will be worse for the environment in the long run.

terrible flimsy quality.
was at the Apple Store today collecting my phone and so many people picked the cases up and put them straight back. All the display models had scratches in them.

The process of making leather is an environmental disaster.
Good job Apple! Also, leather is long overdue. Just like fur.

They changed the footprint of the phone so it won’t fit….. can already confirm that.
I didn't get it for the 15 Pro. I'm hanging on to my 14 Pro. Last year Apple kept the case options available for the 13 but this year they took them all down immediately and they started to sell out quickly at every other retailer.

I got mine on sale but it's really no great loss that Apple doesn't make leather cases anymore. Although they fit the best the leather quality was poor compared to the full grain options from third parties.

Third party case makers are absolutely thrilled with apple dropping leather cases. More profit for the little guys.
