I have some interesting findings

The issue we are seeing likely has to do with static electricity. When my iPad is in the stand mode, with smart folio attached, the touch sensitivity issue arises. However, when I detach the folio, issue improves. And when I plug in my iPad to charge, issue goes away entirely

Can this issue be because of the folios and magnets? Has anyone tested glass without any cover attached vs snap in cases vs folios?

Couple things.......

1) Thank you guys for doing all the testing and letting the rest of us sit this out until a solution is found.

2) I immediately applied a screen protector to my Air 1 as soon as I got it, because, I ‘assumed’ if I didnt then the screen would soon get scratched up and trashed. I planned on doing the same with my new 12.9 IPP, until I saw this thread. I often listen to Leo La Porte’s Radio show because he seems to be a pretty knowledgeable tech guy. The other day someone wanted to know which screen protector to get for his new, expensive iPhone X. La Portes answer was ‘none!’. He doesn’t use screen protectors on any of his devices saying if it was designed to ‘need’ a screen protector it would have come with one rightfully installed or in the least Apple would have they’re own branded one that you would be stuck purchasing because it ‘needs’ it.

Along the same lines. My neighbor uses his new iPad completely naked, no case or anything, saying he bought it because its an amazingly light weight, thin, compact device, saying ‘why would I want to change that by adding weight and bulk to a device Ive been wanting to become lighter and thinner?’ He loves using as it is, because that’s the device, and reason, he bought it.

I went all out and purchased the Smart Keyboard case and pencil. I was imagining my old MBP pushed out of the way and the whole new setup in its place but so far, just as with my Air, I’ve only used it on my lap, in which case the Smart Keyboard case was becoming a bit annoyingly bulky. So I took it off. Wallah, a thin, light weight powerful iPad! Kinda why I bought it to begin with :)

Anyhoo. I just spent a crapload of money and I’m too paranoid about ‘not’ protecting my investment so I’ll probably do what I can to protect it, but sometimes I wonder if its all ‘really needed’.

An update from me. ESR protectors now gone back to amazon - FaceID was fine but touch issues were not good.

Received MediaDevil display today - a bit fiddly to put on, but a perfect fit (unlike the ESR which was not as precise) and both FaceID and touch sensitivity all seem good. Only had it on for about 3-4 hours of use, but much better than before.

Well done MediaDevil.

I ordered the media devil too but I just noticed it’s glass-free. Is this just a regular plastic bendable screen protector?

Just got this one in today. FaceID gives me issues on occasion, but no problems with touch or pencil. I gave the FaceID area extra pressure to get rid of all possible air bubbles and it seems to be a bit improved.

Went right back to having issues. Also started seeing touch input problems. Took it off and will be returning it to Amazon.

Listen, I’ve had mine installed for a while now and not a single manifestation. It is what it is, and if you guys don’t want to take what I said, I’m ok with it.

Just want to contribute to this thread on my experience with the JeTech brand. I don’t work for them, nor am I associated with them in any way. The brand happens to be the only one I can get quickly from Amazon at a cheap price.

And hey, it works for me and I’ve been putting protectors on my iPads since the original iPad and I’ve experienced some problems and learned to develop some techniques that resulted in perfect installs.
Give it time... LOL

Indeed my JetTech screen protector install is the best I have ever done. Perfect first time. Other than the little circle you literally can't tell its there.

For the meantime my technique is use until touch response becomes annoying. Lock iPad and massage the screen protector down. Then back to use and it works pretty much fine again until the next time.

I am hoping MediaDevil answer my questions about if their screen protector has the same impact resistance as the tempered glass ones. Also how the feel of their protector is compared to glass.
The main reason I use a screen protector is to protect against the accidental drop and screen smash.

The MediaDevil is not made of glass, it has a limited flexibility. They say it is a new development by them in the UK with 9H hardness. It is therefore more akin to the traditional film protector in thinness and low weight. Having been wedded to glass protectors for a few years now, all I can say is I am happy to have changed to the new Magicscreen, no issues with the IPad Pro 11 and will be using it on iOS devices from now on.

You can't go wrong with Mediadevil, as I have said before many times, its the best protector out there and they know what their doing..

Still can't wait to get home and fit the MD protector, get back on Wednesday and all my touch issues will have gone

Hi,

I got my MediaDevil screen protector on Friday and works great! No more lag or pressing hard on the screen.

Must buy and works great.

Does it work with every case or only with the Smart Folio designed cases?

Can’t see why it should have any issues with any case. I’ve tried it with an ESR folio case (purely as a test), no issues and it of course works fine with Apple folio and Smart Keyboard. Photo is a side view with Apple folio clearly visible on the back....you can’t see the MediaDevil screen protector, it is that thin.

How does it feel compared to glass?

Not as absolutely smooth as glass but very good and I genuinely like it for touch and pencil use. Also keeps the iPad very close to the original exposed thickness.

Just feels normal like I am touching the iPad screen without the protector on.

I have done a bunch more testing and I am 99% sure the touch sensitivity issues have to do with the iPad being electrically grounded. If you touch it in any way with your opposite hand, or have it plugged in, it works perfectly in any orientation. As soon as it's just sitting there by itself and you try to type on it (flat on a table or propped up in a case, for example) all touch functionality is removed. If you push aggressively with the tip of your fingernail, you can get some touches to register in a pinch.

Now that I've figured it out, I have no idea what the solution is.

Got another refund (7th or so) from the last glass screen protector I tried. I guess I'll just have to live with ALWAYS having the iPad grounded (either by my other hand touching it, plugged in, etc.) or I simply can't use it if I want to avoid scratching the screen. Kind of takes the shine off a $1200 tablet. Oh well.

Those of you that claim it's working even if nothing is touching/grounding the iPad, I'd love to see a video showing 100% flawless touch response propped up in a case or flat on the table. I've been through every brand of glass so far including now 2 JetTechs (literally flawless installs, zero bubbles, not one speck of dust) and the Face ID always works just fine but touch response is 100% removed unless the above conditions are met.

I’m on my third screen protector. At this point I’m basically giving up until some reputable brand makes one.
Each of these $10 protectors from amazon all have issues and the poor ratings confirm it.

I really don’t like going without something on the screen but having an unresponsive screen makes the device unusable.

Go with MediaDevil - if the other "glass" protector makers get the problem fixed then swap back. I really wanted a cover to protect from the kids so this is the only option (for me) at the moment. It looks and feels great - can't vouch for how shatterproof/resistant it is but I don't plan on dropping the iPad :)

Media Devil Mini Review

So i’ve been having touch issues (missed swipes and taps) with my iPad Pro 11 (with and without screen protectors - more noticable with).

Decided to try the Media Devil pretty much based on this thread (and as a last ditch attempt before I return iPad number 2).

In essence :
  • It’s super thin (as you’d expect being closer to ‘film’ than traditional glass)
    • How this reacts to impact rather than acting like ‘ablative’ armour i’m unsure (part of me naturally assumes that if my old glass screen protector takes the brunt of the force and breaks then that’s going to save my screen - I’m not sure the science of what happens if the screen protector doesn’t break - i.e. is the force transferred to the screen beneath?)
  • It’s got an excellent ‘edge to edge’ fit (so much so that, apart from the cutouts on front camera and Face ID it’s unnoticable). The only small (petty) criticism is that the Face ID hole seems slightly out of alignment, it doesn’t affect it working though (which is the main thing)
  • Really good transparency - you won’t notice any degridation of colour/image with this
  • Slightly tacky on first install - not as smooth as glass. That being said the more i’ve used it the more that initial tackyness appears to wear off.
  • Ease of application - again a while since i’ve used film rather than glass but i tend to use a technique i learnt over in Hong Kong where they align the screen beforehand, tape one side like a ‘hinge’ and then remove the bottom layer. Means almost perfect alignment every time and you can then focus on chasing bubbles out. This one came with lots of fluff on it (debris from the cardboard or factory dust perhaps) so i had to spend more time chasing ‘bits’ off my screen but with a bit of care it came out looking perfect. Give your screen protector a wipe down before you try installing it to avoid cross contamination.
  • Touch Response - MUCH better than any glass protector i’ve used on the iPad(I’ve used...er...3 now?). I’m still having missed swipes and taps every now and then but at a significantly reduced rate to the previous protectors.
I’ll still _probably_ hand my iPad back in as the touch (with or without a protector) just appears to be not as sensitive or ‘immediate’ as my last gen Pro 12.9 (which was fine even with a glass screen protector).

That being said this made me pause for a bit and consider keeping it and i’ll keep my spare Media Devil for the time I ‘dip my toe’ once more into the Pro 11 pool (likely beginning of next year - hopefully any initial iPad production/quality issues have been ironed out or perhaps a bug fix to improve the screen sensitivity).

Hope this helps someone

That's really weird, I have no clue why that's happening...one for Apple to explain. What you've said about using your body as an earth has some definite merit to it, but if I remember correctly, Apple doesn't use earth pins, it uses an isolating transformer, which would mean that plugging the phone in shouldn't make any difference. I'm not claiming to be an authority on this subject and would be delighted to be corrected.

We now believe MediaDevil Ultra-Tough screen protectors are likely conducting the electrical charge (from your finger or Apple Pencil 2) better than other screen protectors, which is making up for the apparent deficiency in the iPad screen. One of the ingredients in this new material is known for its conductive abilities, amongst other things. We added a small amount to the material mix, to help us with the further R&D of a new product we hope to launch later in 2019 (it's really difficult to properly sample materials like this unless you mass produce). We knew it would probably improve certain traits of the screen protector, and that was/is due to be determined in the new year. Greater conductivity wasn't something we'd even considered as an objective (you kinda assume modern device screens will just 'work'!), so if that's it's the reason these screen protectors are working better, that's pretty unexpected and cool :)

Thank you for being open to conversation with members and so thorough.

One thing I am curious about is ship time to th US. I just got a new iPad Pro 11 over the weekend and have not opened it yet as I prefer to have some type of protection on it first. Would it be quickest to order from amazon or your own website?

Also I am still concerned over not having real glass and just a plastic film. I’ve switched over to glass on every device many years ago and I find it odd to go backwards per se.

Hey there,

I read about the Magicscreen from Media Devil in this thread and ordered it on Sunday, today it arrived via express in Germany. Good job!

First impression is very positive. Installation was easy and the using the iPad is the same as before, I cannot notice the protector. No problems with swiping etc and FaceID is working without problems. So, clear recommendation for the Magicscreen!

Great to hear. Still waiting on mine for my 12.9. Hopefully today.
