This happens every year tbh. I think the screens need a couple weeks to settle before you can really judge. But with night shift/true tone, you can manipulate the warmth/coolness of the screen. So I don't feel like this is a huge issue.

Is this true with OLEDs? I have a C39 unit, but only notice yellow tint when TT is on. I turned it off, and it looks fine.

I got the X on Friday from Verizon and I noticed the blue shift off-axis right away. I don't understand people saying this is a "normal" part of OLED technology, because it isn't. I own a 2017 LG OLED tv and one of the main reasons I bought it was because IT DOESN'T color shift off-axis like LCDs do. I can watch off to any side and the color and saturation is basically identical, with no blue or any other color shifts.

Maybe this is a Samsung OLED issue or something. My cousin has a Pixel 1 and it looked very vivid off-axis but I only saw it briefly and wasn't looking critically, so not sure if it suffered the same issue but it didn't look like it.

Thank you - this has been aggravating me to no end. The color shift IS there and IS very noticeable.

Not trying to be derogatory but what use case would warrant viewing the screen at any angle other than straight on? The iPad on which I’m typing goes darker when I view it from any angle other than straight on and it’s a non-issue because I don’t use it that way.

Just moving mine around in my hand, shifting the display ever so slightly, causes this.

Be aware that those wearing glasses, that some AR coatings block out some of the blue light. I know mine does, and when I put them on, they will make whites look slightly warmer. Easy to test on a computer. Put up white screen, with glasses off look at the white, put glasses on, if the white is a little warmer, you do have a more premium AR coating.

Interesting. I wear glasses with some kind of coating and I just tried looking at the screen of my rMBP and iPhone 8 with and without glasses. There was not a marked difference, but definitely the screens looked slightly warmer with glasses on. Fortunately neither of these screens have yellow tint so they are fine with glasses on, though the 2016 rMBP has a slight pink to blue unevenness that I only notice if looking for it at this point.

I’ve used multiple 2017 LG OLEDs (and I own a 65 C7). It absolutely color shifts off axis. Very noticeable on white/cream colors. They all do it.

I wear glasses with anti-blue-light coating, and there’s a difference with every LCD screen I look at. I had to disable True Tone on my 8 Plus as it looked too yellow with my glasses on. However my iPad Pro 10.5 looks great with True Tone even with my glasses on.

If thats the case, I don't think OLED is ready for prime time, and is a step back from LCD. LCD solved color shift with IPS tech in the 2000s. Now we have to wait for OLED to catch up to where LCD was almost 20 years ago? Nah bro.

I wish Apple would allow an option for full calibration like just about every TV does....

I don't notice it at all with my 65B7P. With iPhone X I do, and it's worse than LCD.

Something is def wrong with these iPhone X OLED panels. My LG OLED tv does not have color shift visible to my eyes. Maybe Samsung is providing inferior quality panels to its competitors.

SG 256GB - Slight shift to yellow when looking at phone straight on with minor movements. Then shifts to red off axis but text remains bold.

The silver model I've returned shifted more to a pale yellow. This made text look washed out.

Slight adjustment in settings and I've created a cooler blue tone. But the off axis shift remains. Have to say it messes with eyes and as a graphic designer who spends my days agonising over minor details I find this unsettling because I can't relax and stop noticing it.

With auto brightness on its not £1000 better than my 7+. The build quality, feel in hand, face id and gestures do create a better experience but I'm a little torn about keeping this product because the display is not blowing me away.

If you guys don't like the yellowish tone, just turn True Tone off and back to white/blue. What's the complaint about?

I have the blue blocking AR coating, which is really great for your eyes if you sit in front of a computer or use a other smartphones, ipads all day and they really cut back on the eye strain. They will make whites a little more yellow. Not as much as night mode, but you can see the difference.

The complaint is with TT off Nightshift off and screen brightness up whites look yellow still. Can someone post (or point me to the post) that has a pic of a screen that isn’t yellow/ they don’t think is yellow?

They do, though it’s hidden. Settings, General, Accessibility, Display Accomodations, Color Filters.

Nope, not a true solution. It puts a blue layer over everything to try to counteract the yellow but thats different then truly adjusting the base white point of the panel. The blue layer looks artificial.

Add me to the list of customers that has the yellowish screen. I as well have TT turned off. Even when making the suggested Hue changes I still get the yellow on the screen just different shade of yellow. If it where a consistent color from top to bottom that would be one thing, but it is yellow at the top and blueish on the bottom. Then with the slightest hand shift the yellow is at the bottom and the blueish is at the top. I have seen OLED and understand that it has different characteristics than LCD, but I have several friends with Samsung Note 8 and Pixel devices and their screens are amazing with none of this yellow tint that is on the iPhone. I wonder if it has to do with them adjusting the pixel configurations on the panel.

So just an update for everyone:

I called Apple support. They are definitely empathetic and their customer care manager talked with me and she was like very nice about everything but essentially said that they can override so I can return the replacement phone I had gotten, but I will have to wait like everyone else to reorder one. Not the ideal solution. I asked about getting another replacement instead and she said that would have to be the in-store decision (when i went to apple store their workers say "its how its supposed to be..blah blah and they cant keep replacing cause the next one will be the same too). I had to confirm for myself, so I went to Verizon and their display model also looked perfect (their rep was also like, dude, it’s a noticeable difference between yours being more dim and yellow tint when i put them side by side!).

My decision: I have decided to return the phone completely, and will try to snag another one if get lucky (they are all sold out everywhere) or just order again and wait a few weeks and hope that its just the early batch that is affected by this yellow screen. I don't think anyone should settle with the yellow tint or even the hue adjustment, because there are phones out there with screens as they should be and they look fantastic - especially when spending $1000+ on a phone.

(And for all those about to be like turn this or that setting off...I am referring to yellow tint with TT and Night OFF).

I went into the apple store and they basically went and compared it to their “triage” model. I asked to see it and come to find out the triage model had the same issue. A few of their floor models looked so perfect nice crisp whites with ZERO yellow hue, yet they wouldn’t listen to me.

Plus they had no replacements in stock for me to even trade out.

This yellow hue is a disaster, my iPhone 7 Screen looks better then this. At full brightness it’s uellow, at low brightness it’s super yellow.

If i turn my phone not even 1mm to either side the screen becomes a perfect bright white like it should be head on.

I have an appointment at another store Thursday hopefully by then more comes out about this defect of yellow hue screens and hopefully they have replacements; this is completely unacceptable and looks awful. This is not what a brand new OLED Screen should look like at all.

Did you even read any of this thread or just assume 25 pages of us are that stupid not to know True Tone is not off?

Try reading before replying.

Yep i can’t stand it. There is absolutely no excuse for this ****. The floor models on the floor at the store that look good, and some of them look like **** and yellow like my phone. Apple needs to speak up on what the hell is going on.

I turn my phone not even 1mm to the side and screen looks UNREAL! But if i look straight on it’s AWFUL and has a nasty yellow hue.

I've found it surprisingly easy to get the X actually. Every day at 6AM Apple Store inventory is updated on the Apple Store App. You just check in the morning, and every day stock has been available. You can then reserve one right from the app by going through the checkout process, which then gives you a pickup window at your selected Apple store. Go to the store around that time and in and out in 15 minutes. I've bought 3 iPhone X's this weekend doing this.

Of course, if you are set on waiting for another batch, may want to hold off.

Right, and I do appreciate these adjustments being available and playing with the hue/intensity sliders improved my X’s screen. But it’s not full calibration — really wish they’d offer it.
