looks like apple made QC optional in order to balance out paying more for the s6 oled panels and to get enough in stock to rob you of $1k :p

Do you have True Tone turned on? It adjusts screen hue depending on light in the room. Turning it off on my phone makes the screen a cooler color.

I’ve turned it off already. It’s a big improvement but still a noticeable yellow tint. Doesn’t adjust until it’s a good 10 degrees away from a natural straight position

Then you must have a screen that is more yellow then. Well, you could always try and do an exchange, you are still within the 14 day return policy.

You’re being Awfully negative. The OP just wanted some feedback to see if they had a normal or defective device. There’s no need to be so hostile to other people around you.
Yep it's just one of the trade offs of OLED - the technology is sold as an upgrade in every way, but in reality you get some improvements - black levels, improved battery life for darker content, more vibrant colours, flexibility and ability to make custom shapes/ borderless devices while some things are worse than LCD - off axis colour shift, odd subpixel layout, worse tendency for burn in, worse battery life for bright screen content, to name just some of the pros and cons.
The display is beautiful. Maybe u have a defect. Color shift is common with oleds. It’s not bad and it certainly doesn’t impede the experience. I love this display. Not a bad thing to say about it. And I’m already used to the notch and I’ve only have about 5 minutes of looking at it. JMHO
Guess maybe I’ll get used to it, but being a photo retoucher by trade, it’s gonna drive me a little nuts.

Don’t understand why I don’t see this on OLED TVs.
I guess time will tell but it’s driving me a little mad

Not trying to be derogatory but what use case would warrant viewing the screen at any angle other than straight on? The iPad on which I’m typing goes darker when I view it from any angle other than straight on and it’s a non-issue because I don’t use it that way.
Holiding my phone one handed in my left hand, the screen shifted to cyan just by reaching with my thumb over to the reply button.

Do you think a screen protector could be behind this? I have a second phone (my sisters) I’m waiting to compare that before panicking

That seems like an extreme shift. Mine does not do that. Consider comparing your phone to in-store models if you have a Apple or bestbuy store near you.

A screen protector could be causing it, emphasis on the could. I’ve used some protectors in the past that caused colors to look off.

Now I use every single iPhone I’ve had caseless and screen protector-less. These phones are too nice to be covered up.

OK, so this non-uniform colour when looking dead on at the screen has me irritated now. I can't unsee it.

Fortunately, I ordered 2 X's from different suppliers. I was going to send the second one back without even opening it, but decided to pop open the box for a comparison.

The current phone (with the non-uniform colour) is on the left. "New" phone on the right. Brightness set to the same level and True Tone on.

The difference is quite startling. In the first pic showing control centre, the left phone is slightly pinker at the top. The right phone had a uniform grey colour top to bottom.

In the second pic, the left phone almost looks lilac at the top. The right phone again is uniform, if a little darker.

There is definitely a difference in these panels. Although the right phone is darker, I much prefer the uniform colour.

I checked the serial numbers and they were made in different factories - the left in Shenzhen and the right in Zhengzhou.

I'll be sending the left phone back. If anyone wants me to do anything further comparisons before I erase it and box up for return tomorrow, please let me know and I'll be happy to help.

Actually yes, the verge’s video review said the X is warmer tone to the screen than the iPhone 8.

Once again....anyone spouting fake news anymore means it’s probsbly true.

https://www.theverge.com/2017/10/31/16579748/apple-iphone-x-review

Scroll in this video to 4:20.

Fill in the blank here:
"Looking at the iPhone X side-by-side with the iPhone 8, I think the X is noticeably ____________"

Spoiler alert: the word is cooler.

Its ether the exact Verge screen for me, or I return.

Just moving the phone around the slightest has a color shift.

The yellow has gone in settings where you go

9a3b8da0e85b599c65e419d6b11f0931.jpg

This setting along with turning off true tone improved it greatly for my eyes.

Maybe I would get used to true tone but all my other monitors (iMac and MacBook) are whiter/bluer so when I look at my iPhone X with true tone on it really looks yellow.

Turning off true tone and setting reduce white point also seems to reduce the oled color shifting thing. It doesn't completely go away but I guess that is current oled tech. I don't think I will notice this after a few days.

A dark mode would help this issue greatly.

I largely agree with you, I just hate giant scratches on my screen even more, especially when watching YouTube. Sadly working on building sites regularly my screen is a scratch magnet. I’m always naked on the back

This seems like you have a problematic display. If I roll the phone around in my hand (does that make sense?) I can see a slight color shift, nothing dramatic like you describe. Or maybe I’m shifting it less than you are, who knows.

It would be interesting to me to see a survey of people who dislike the default look of the iPhone X...with people who are familiar with what a properly calibrated television/monitor looks like.

My screen shows the blue tint when viewing it from an angle too. It is indeed noticeable. Does it really bother me? Only time will tell.

Love the phone though. :)

The problem is, as with all iPhone launches, that there is variance in the panels.

There is no "One iPhone X panel/color".

This has been true of all launches. Some are complete crap, some, like Nilay's Verge phone, are immaculate.

Apple tends to give the best phones to reviewers, and dumps the cheap panels on the masses.

This has nothing to do with proper calibration. There is a marked difference in quality between panels. Usually in the beginning, panels with lower QC are let through to meet initial demand.

It may be a problematic display... I am not moving it very much to see the cast.

I am not suggesting there is an issue with the calibration of the devices. I am just curious if, at least a segment, of the people seeing an issue are unfamiliar with what it should actually look like. The use of a properly calibrated monitor or television is still a small minority of people overall, unfortunately. Not a knock. Not an insult. Not an accusation. I've just found that a large percentage of people have become unaccustomed to an imperfect calibration and just don't know any better.

I get it and people try to claim this every year. The point is, there is variance, so youd have to control for the variance in the panels. The more we try to pretend there is only 1 calibration for the X, the more Apple gets away with dumping defects on the masses.

Any slight movement of the phone and it is visible, off axis can be a single degree off Center and it can be seen!
Yep. I just spent 15-20 mins with a display model X and anything off centre, as in even a few degrees in any direction and the blue just overwhelms the display. Holding the screen exactly perpendicular to my face's direction and it's good, but in all honesty who holds the phone exactly (I mean to the single degree) like that? I sure don't.

It's very noticeable and quite a let down IMO. I didn't check other OLED display phones, I only compared it to my 7, but if all other OLEDs are like this I'd gladly stay with Apple's IPS panels.
