I keep getting this as well. Every thing was fine until about a week or so ago... maybe 10 days. Brand new (november) iMac with 96gb of RAM. no issues until I installed Xpress VPN software... only think new installed besides the June 2 Mac update. still on Catalina (10.15.7)

Ive tried removing extensions caught by EtreCheck. removed totally the VPN software. Updated my dropbox (needed for work) Removed google drive app and added google sync... Ordered a new USB3Hub for my externals.

See my report below. Im pulling my hair out trying to figure out what happened...

End of report

it is worth noting that the last kernel extension for both of us is @filesystems.smbfs ... however coincidental that is ... I wonder if completely disabling samba somehow may be something to try.

also, just a small victory for myself currently (i tried removing as much old config that EtreCheck found):

Code:
11:22 up 7 days, 13:20, 3 users, load averages: 5.64 3.72 3.06

This is the first time my machine has been up for over a week in a year.
and .... I spoke too soon ... literally this morning, crash again.

I was getting this watchdog timeout error intermittently when my 2019 i9 iMac was waking up from sleep, about once per day. The computer was initially fine for about a year after I purchased and and then these kernel panics and the error messages started appearing. I think it started after I updated my Universal Audio audio interface driver in May this year. I decided to re-insert all my thunderbolt and usb connections firmly and the problem went away. I've had no more crashes for about two weeks now and I haven't changed anything else in my system. I'm not sure this is the solution for everyone but I recommend doing that as part of the troubleshooting---seems to have fixed it for me.

Been having the same crash as everyone. I noticed a pattern, The crash seems to happen at Idle times, and a few times I noticed the mouse froze when coming back to the mac moving the mouse around seems to unfreeze the mac. I ordered a "VAYDEER Tiny Mouse Jiggler USB" which causes your cursor to constantly move when you have it on (Assuming any juggler that has the cursors moving constantly will work). Every time I leave the Mac I turn it the "Mouse Jiggler" and for the last week I have not had a Kernel Panic, normally had them a few times a day. Not sure what this proves but I think something on the Mac tries to go to sleep when it is Idle it crashes. If anyone else has a mouse jiggle can you try this and see if it make a difference??

In the 43 pages here, has a solution ever been found? I'm still getting this crash on my 2019 iMac using the latest MacOS (11.4 (20F71)). I have a Fusion drive. I somehow feel that's part of the problem because sometimes before of its regular crashes it will complain that there's no HD space... despite there being over 700GB free.

the largest impact to affecting better uptime from this crash (for me) was to remove Terminal from "Developer Tools" -->

If anyone else has a mouse jiggle can you try this and see if it make a difference??
i've had this crash during intense use ... so this wouldn't be a factor for me. during use, the entire machine slowly just locks up ... i can interact with some windows here and there and then bam, the cursor locks, and then a minute or two later, reboot.

Just to add a new note - Just applied the latest BigSur 10.5.1 update to my Mac Pro iBin (details elsewhere in thread) ... and we're back in the bad old days of multiple crashes a day.

PROBLEM.... SORT OF FIXED/REDUCED, Been having this problem just like everyone, noticed that it only crashed when things were idle, and once when it looked like it was going to crash I started to move the mouse and it came bace from the edge. I got the idea to try a "Mouse jiggle USB port mouse mover" which I turn on anytime I am away from my screen (The Jiggler I have has a built in power switch) and for the last 2 months it has not kernel panicked once when the Jiggler was on. This proves that it is a problem when things are Idle and Apple needs to fix this.

I am having the same issue with my 2013 Mac Pro. This may have fixed your issue but I don't think it's a one size fits all situation. My will kernel panic while I am actively using the device. I have had it kernel panic as I am moving the cursor to click on something, whether it be a link on a webpage or clicking and dragging to copy+paste something.

Everything I have read everyone points to the GPUs on the 2013 Mac Pro as the issue, but after reading this thread it seems like it affects a wide range of Apple computers rather than it being confined to one model or one issue. I can do all sorts of graphically intensive tasks and it will work no problem, then something as simple as opening a word doc will cause the whole system to freeze with the watchdog kernel panic, so I don't think the GPUs are the problem. It just happens at random for any possibilities. There doesn't seem to be a link to a certain process or workflow that triggers the event on my end.

My guess is it is a mixture of software AND hardware-related issues across the board with an unknown range of possibilities that can trigger the same kernel panic, this may be why it hasn't been fixed by Apple.

My system seems to crash when I let it idle. Today, after reading the last few pages of this forum discussion, I ran EtreCheck and found something interesting... in addition to the System Crash report that came up upon the auto-restart (which blamed it on the WindowServer watchdog timing out)...

EtreCheck also reported another crash in its System/Diagnostics section from about the same time:

Process: IDECacheDeleteAppExtension [697]
Path: /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/PlugIns/IDECacheDeleteAppExtension.appex/Contents/MacOS/IDECacheDeleteAppExtension

I do not use Xcode on this machine, so I decided to delete it from the system based on instructions at https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/110227

Since this has been an intermittent crash, who knows when I will be able to report back here if the system has become stable, so I am just writing a note in case this helps anyone else track down their bug.

Big Sur 11.5.1
iMac Pro

Nope. The xcode cache cleaning crash was not the cause of the WindowServer hang. The system hung WindowServer three times last night after I removed Xcode from the system.

The only "knowns" right now are:
1) It tends to happen while I am away from the computer. Looks like it takes a few hours before it happens.
2) It did not happen for a full week of my debugging attempts (leaving it on overnight), and then it recurred after I started doing work.. as it happens it was with QGIS.app (LTR v 3.16.8) although I have not ruled QGIS's involvement in the crash in or out yet.

Being idle may itself be a red-herring, since I tend to work for a few hours, and take a break.. it may just be dumb luck that it crashes during the breaks.

I have isolated this problem on my computer to the "mediaanalysisd" system agent. When I use the app LaunchControl to unload the agent, I will never get the watchdog timeout window server crash. If you are using Big Sur, you need to disable SIP to be able to do this.

The media and photo analysis in the photos app only occurs when the computer is "idle" and that's why this problem always happens when the system is "idle." - that is my working theory, anyway.

I have been dealing with the idle crash across multiple computers (iMac 2015 and currently iMac Pro).

This crash only occurs when multiple external monitors are connected to my computer.

I have AppleCare and tried for a month to explain this problem to Apple support, but they would only offer to replace my logic board. This is clearly a "bug" and not a hardware issue - very disappointed they wouldn't spend the time to resolve this issue - or at least allow me to reproduce it for them.

In the interim, I have taken to using the app "amphetamine" to never allow my computer to idle - preventing the crashes.

I have heard that this is perhaps due to a "malformed image or video" that the analysis tools are trying to evaluate that cause the watchdog timeout, but I have no way of isolating that - I have 100k+ photos.

I hope this helps somebody.

cjmildenberg, thanks for your post.
Here is a little bit more corroborative data pointing to mediaanalysisd.

Using EtreCheck's Analytics graph, I found that the CPU and GPU temps rise sharply coming into the time of the crash - top graph. (times taken from WindowServer spin reports in Console.app) It looks like something is "running away".

Every time of a crash, the mediaanalysis program was consuming a fairly large amount of resources - bottom graph.

In the chart below, the grey bars represent "User Idle" status. The white slip after each crash is the 5 minutes that the computer is not in "User Idle" state, because it has restarted. The other white spaces are where I was using the computer.
Analytics for WindowServer Crashes on iMac Pro.jpg

This is a frustrating crash to debug.. because mediaanalysisd doesn't always run (it depends on what work there is to do in photos.app media) and it doesn't always crash.. as cjmildenberg noted, it may depend on stumbling over a broken image file.

Looking at the parameters for the mediaanalysis.plist it shows that it should only run with "Requires Screen Sleep" -- which is an ambiguous term, since in System Preferences, you get options for computer to sleep, and the display to power off.

I suppose that you could toggle that to "No" and it would run without waiting for screen sleep to kick in, allowing one to use tools to monitor what is going on as it is happening.

Likewise, I hope this helps get this bug fixed some year.

I have been having the same issue bough the new iMac earlier this year. Once I connected a second Monitor to the iMac it started these kernel panic errors causing the system to restart randomly. I posted on the community support to but didn't find a resolution. Was there any resolution to this. I literally been having to use this with a secondary display.

I have been having this issue since Catalina up to big sur already... I can confirm this happens when idle, i have never had a crash while i was sitting in front of (i am coder, so i am sitting most of the time front of it). And i can also confirm it might have be related with attaching 2 external monitors on TB3 ports (1 port each) on my MBPRO 2019 Intel

With a few attempts of trying to upgrade to Catalina and getting the panic every single time. I made a conscious decision to wait for the next upgrade, a la, Big Sur. But, then since my computer is a late 2013 iMac, which just falls outside of the qualified list for Big Sur, I had to revisit the upgrade to the Catalina.

It amazed me that Apple had abandoned their loyal customers and after few years, this problem still exists. WHAT IS GOING ON?

Many of us do not have multiple computers to "try", nor to wipe and re-install every time we have a panic issue. And since when debug became our job? There is no solution on Apple's website, With the last resort I swap the logic board, thinking that I don't want to touch anything or doing anything heroic, but, changing to a new Apple logic board DO NOT SOLVE the problem. Using a single monitor only, DO NOT solve the problem. Turning off the screen saver DO NOT SOLVE THE problem. Eliminating all 3rd party and unused modules DO NOT RESOLVE the problem. Swapped out the fusion drive with SSD only drive DO NOT RESOLVE the problem. Even in the save mode, panic to winserver still happens!!! None of the Catalina versions are stable, NONE!@

The only stable version is Mojave 10.14.6. Why is this version stable? WHY?? With people here owning a newer iMac and still have the same issue, make me less motivated to buy a new iMac. What the XXXX

I like many others have been dealing with this issue with Catalina. What have others done to get through this? Roll back to Mojave or High Serra? I have done 3-4 clean installs of Catalina and is still crashing at least once per day.

Exactly the same problem here on Big Sur with my late 2015 iMac. Almost always have the terminal app open here.

I am going to try eter check, have removed the most recent apps installed BUT...the newest has been the server for google drive, once google chnged from their back up and sync to a full version of their google drive that is a server connection is when i noticed stuff going crazy.... so the only thing i have left to truly remove is that google drive . app

so thats my plan, run the eter, then remove google's newest drive app.... and from there try and make my monitors stay on and never sleep i suppose....

I am going to try eter check, have removed the most recent apps installed BUT...the newest has been the server for google drive, once google chnged from their back up and sync to a full version of their google drive that is a server connection is when i noticed stuff going crazy.... so the only thing i have left to truly remove is that google drive . app

so thats my plan, run the eter, then remove google's newest drive app.... and from there try and make my monitors stay on and never sleep i suppose....

with all this being said i got rid of tuxera ntfs, my computer has fallen asleep a few times and woke back up.... odd, but IVE also shut down google drive. and gotten rid of xcode (almost 20 gigs...wth)... so could be either according to etre pro:

software installs over the past 60 days has me a bit concerned about the bottom 3 & security update for catalina, i never had these issues before these things were installed including google drive...one drive is a newer install as well, never had it before, with one drive running i dont see an issue thus far, but with google drive it was an issue...

So 1 last thing i did was to create a new user account same as my other user administrator....

Thus far:

Logitech popped up with an update (did not have the update ever pop up under original user account)

Ran etre pro again.... Very very different results, it said i had a hard drive failing, no os installed and no file version.... No uptime, and was very different, did show the kernel panics and a few other items that were on the other user account etre check....

Restarting now after logitech updated for the 2nd user account i created.... I will re run etre on both user accounts to see what the differences are.... I was suprised to see all the issues my new user account showed on the newest etre run...

If making a new user account fixes things then ill be happy (who has tried this????!!!!) The link below step #9

i Truly believe my issue was caused by Google's newest update where they took back up and sync and turned it into a server connection and installed google drive.app, i turned it on and my computer got so sluggish and the mouse would barely moove, when i turned it off it took a inute or two and returned to normal.... for me thats a good start,

still after re running etre check, im pretty sure the tuxera ntfs was causing my kernel panics, and ive since removed it along with xcode and deactivated google...

I don't use Google Drive, I don't use 3rd party mouse or keyboard. Everything is Apple. Removed XCODE, panic still happening...
