AppliedVisual said:you're still going to want to carry a phone cord with your notebook and it's easy to leave the USB modem (which is about the same size as one of those little inline DSL filters or a line splitter) connected to one end of the phone cord in your bag.
Fax capability is probably going to be the #1 reason for still having a modem within the next 2~3 years, if it isn't now.

Rocketman said:Where is there a FREE IP to Fax service? Outgoing calls to fax machines are either free now or VERY low cost to the degree one could pay $24.95 per YEAR for this and the service provider would RAKE IN CASH.
Incoming faxes could have a recipient recognition feature.

AppliedVisual said:I don't know of a free one, but I know of several providers that offer a dedicated fax number that dumps all incoming faxes to an email address and faxes can be sent by emailing standard file types like JPEG, TIFF, PDF, EPS and Word documents to the proper email address. A few come to mind at about $5 month when added to existing phone service packages or about $20 per month on their own.
FWIW, I forgot to mention it in my last disgruntled post (rant) about modems... It makes more sense to use a cell phone as a modem these days as most cell providers offer web service on top of your normal service plan for about $5/month (that's what Verizon charges) and some even include it as part of the plan. On most CDMA or GSM networks, you can get 140 to 300 Kbps or about 4 to 8 X as fast as a conventional modem and the convenience of being able to use it wherever you have cell service and you don't have to hunt down a Starbucks <like that's tough> to get free net access. I've used my Verizon phone off and on when I travel and it works great for this. Most areas I get about 144Kbps, but when I'm in one of their "Broadband" areas, I get downloads that approach T1 speed at about 1.5Mbps.
So, the only real advantage or use (IMNSHO) for a modem these days is for fax capability. But even that's a stretch... It's true there's lots of places that internet service in the form of DSL, Cable, etc.. is not available. But It's rare that Satellite is the only option giving cellular alternatives or fixed point wireless or shared DS1/T1 options. Full T1/DS1 these days is about $385 in most places anymore. Set one up and share with 10 of your neighbors (even if they're each 1000 yards away) wirelessly and you're all into it for less than $50/month. ...I've seen that done a bunch too and have helped set up a few such arrangements.
Doesnt the Seagate 160gb HD fit into the MBP? Ive heard its the best replacement as of date.jmelrose said:I'm less interested in clock speed an more interested in getting a 160GB hard drive in a MacBook Pro, or larger. I think OWC has 160GB aftermarket drives now, hopefully Apple will follow suit shortly. I really want to upgrade my PB 1.5Ghz to the top-of-the-line 17" MCP when it's out, but not if I have to upgrade the storage with an aftermarket solution. I need my warranty intact!
Hey neighbor, bring ur mac over so i can play with it until i get mine. Thanks so much. loljmelrose said:That's true, but also note that i don't want to void my warranty right out of the box by swapping out the hard drive.
How hard are those upgrades anyway for a MCP? It was a sizeable undertaking with my PB G4.
Anyway, I have a 120GB in the PB, which was an aftermarket install. I'd like to get a 160GB with the next one and I should be comfy for at least a while.
Orlando area here too, Next Tues. Hi neighbor!
