I would like to see a little lower price for the new Core 2 Duo MBP

Come on! It's not that expensive!

It is called the MBPro, if you don't need the Professional feature, get the MB, it is lower cost.

I'd prefer higher end features, and besides, totally maxed out the 15" is only $2,899.

Where to buy

Buhbuhb,

Here's the price breakdown I did a couple of weeks ago of Apple Store vs. MacMall:

MacBook Pro 17:
MacMall:
Computer $2,644.00
+1GB RAM $160.00
+AppleCare $349.00
-rebates -$163.98
+tax
+shipping $13.98
TOTAL $3,003.00

Apple Store:
Computer $2,799.00
+1GB RAM $190 (from Crucial.com)
+Applecare $349
+Tax: $220.36
TOTAL: $3558.36

18% Price Premium to shop directly with APPLE

Thanks to the fact that MacMall doesn't charge sales tax in my state, and even assuming that if I ordered from Apple I would upgrade the RAM from Crucial rather than Apple directly, there is STILL a $555 savings by buying through MacMall over Apple.

Of course, they may not have the Merom notebooks at zero-hour like at the Apple Store, but for $555, I'll wait a few days.

Anyone know a good reason NOT to buy from MacMall?

Then buy through the academic store.

i will be, but i would like it cheaper still, Apple always seems to reduce the price on a upgrade so i am hoping for £50-£100

I hope for Removable HDD, Mag Latch, 1920x1200 17" Screen, 2.33Ghz, 1Gb Ram and 160Gb HDD

For £1849 - HE Discount

MacMall Is No Good If You Live In California

Yeah. If you live in California. I think better off with PowerMax where there is no sales tax no matter where you live.

Does anyone know if there is a comparison of the differences between the available HDs for MBP?

I'd like to see some benchmark test results of the actual performance difference between the 5400rpm 120GB drive and the 7200rpm 100GB drive.

Hopefully the refresh will offer larger, and possibly dual HDs, but my gut says they won't.

[EDIT: Answered my own question. http://www.barefeats.com/5472.html Anyone have any anecdotal evidence?]

Multimedia,
Do you know if powermax.com is pretty good on updating to reflect changes at the apple store decently (as in a timely manner)?

Has anyone noticed that the 'Intel Core Duo' page on the macbook pro page at apple.com is missing?

If you go to http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/ and click on the square 'Intel Core Duo' logo, you get a 404 error.

If you go to the same page on Apple's website for other countries, ie. the UK site - http://www.apple.com/uk/macbookpro/ and click on the same link, you actually get the correct webpage.

I first noticed this last Tuesday, when I was trying to see if Apple was updating their site. I'm not trying to cause alarm, nor mass-panic. I just wondered if anyone knows when this actually changed?

I am trying to get my purchasing agent to email me the message from Apple right now. I called the Apple higher ed phone line and the operator wouldn't confirm anything, but they don't just cancel orders on a whim. This one has a valid PO number.

Still waiting for the information to be sent to you? I think we're all pretty anxious to see what it was that you recieved.

Am I stupid to be thinking about saving money? I guess I'll just make my decision at the last minute and see if bphoto.com has updated the same day as apple.

You mean saving money by evading taxes. Then, yeah, that is kind of stupid.

EDIT: Ok that sounded kind of bad, I am half joking really, don't get the wrong impression.

Why? It's 160 dollars. I pay taxes on everything else I earn/buy.

Taking bets for no redesigned MBPs until Santa Rosa, who wants to bet?

I think it's almost guaranteed Apple isn't going to do a redesign until Santa Rosa. I can't think of any PC manufacturer who has actually unveiled a wholly new laptop design just for Core 2 Duo, and it would be kind of silly for Apple to spring a new MBP design when the internal architecture wouldn't be similarly "new".

Ugh! How depressing. I would not buy a laptop now if big changes were to come in a "mere" three months.

same here. i think i will wait for santa rosa which isn't too far off since i don't need it right this second. I'll be a switcher but i'll probably just buy a used ibook g4 for now off ebay and sell it when santa rosa comes around.

Let me preface this comment with stating that I don't think there will be a redesign with Merom.

BUT WHAT IF...

...they worked with Intel to design a case that would accomodate whatever Santa Rosa will bring, but still be able to handle the current platform. Then they could have a new design for the holiday shopping season, and just update the innards when Santa Rosa comes out. We've read that Intel stated the last project they worked on with Apple was the MBP.

Again, I'm still in the "no redesign yet" camp, but I like to fuel the fire.

New Design Is Almost Guaranteed This Month

I think it's almost guaranteed Apple is going to present a redesigned MacBook Pro this, next week or the week after next.

Who says Apple is like any other PC manufacturer. By redesign, I mean INSIDE for HD Bay and better cooling system and perhaps black anodized aluminum outside.
