@fireedo can't tell why it wasn't necessary in your case.. Maybe it was something in beta 1/2 but I definitely had to reset the T2 on the machine otherwise it would not work.

Also upgrade a machine of a friend and he also had the same behavior like I had.

Similarly, I upgraded from W-3223 (8 Core) to W-3245 (16 Core).

MacOS on latest Catalina. 10.15.6 on 1TB T2 SSD with secure boot disabled.

Reset was not required and the upgrade was seamless on bootup.

The reset was necessary if you had the big sur bootrom already, which you only had if you installed the big sur beta. Problem stayed with beta 1 and also 2 for sure.

Dunno what happen, but now I'm back to Catalina latest update and still working

I’m planning to get a base model 2019 Mac Pro soon and would like to upgrade the CPU. Is there a compatibility difference between the M and non-M variants? Has anyone tried the QS versions or should those be avoided? The prices for those are very tempting

I don’t plan on “upgrading” to Big Sur anytime soon, do I have to reset anything after I install the new CPU or is it pretty much plug and play?

The only difference between the M and non-M variants is max RAM capacity (and hence the -M are much more expensive.)

@fireedo Once the bootrom update has run with the corresponding CPU, it doesn't matter which macOS is used.

@supaninjax I can't tell you if they will run or not but I can generally advise against QS and ES chips. A QS recently died at a friend's house. Simply from one day to the next. Was a 3275M which was running on a windows 3647 Socket Server and if you ask me don't worth the hassle

Upgraded from a W-3223 8-core to a W-3275M 28-core. It hiccupped a few times (some software froze - pucker time) at first, straightened out after I readjusted the two CPU holddown screws to reduce the pressure on one side and increase by the same amount on the other - about 1/8 turn seemed to do it. For the past week it has been very stable and noticeably quicker. Temperature seems to hover around 42-43 degrees C according to iStat.

Also updated the RAM to 96GB at the same time thanks to one of the folks here for 4 8GB sticks and Amazon for the other two.

So far, so good (fingers crossed.)

I use FCPX for simple 4K editing. That wasn't the software that froze!

I had some trouble with Finder and FireFox and a few other bits of software freezing unexpectedly. Problems stopped after readjusting the CPU holddown screws. They don't seem to have returned after more than a week.

Got the CPU from eBay. Kind of an act of faith  It was advertised as a pull (used) rather than new.

I see them there now for 3K to 3500.

Wow 42 to 43 degrees Celsius for the temperature of the CPU is a lot lower than my 48 to 54 degrees in my 24 Core.
Could someone else share their CPUs temperatures?
I was wondering if I should open and screw a little more. My Mac is running fine, I do not have any issues, but just guessing.

Rukuru,

I have occasionally seen spikes as high as 57 degrees C. Not sure what was going on at those moments but the temp went back into the 40s within minutes. This is the temperature labelled CPU Core PECI.

Possibly different CPUs having different numbers of cores can have differing temps. Also different software loadings can definitely cause varying temps. Not sure I'd worry about it unless it became noticeably higher long term.

Thank you all for your help and info, really appreciate it.

Quick update, I tightened the screws a little extra. Work the whole day video editing in Premiere Pro.

CPU temperature (CPU Core PECI) Idle is in the mid 30s, same as you, working in PP will usually push it to medium 40s.

Very heavy Render in PP will push the temperature to low 60s, it will come back immediately after rendering to low 40s again.

I just want it to leave the information here in case someone need it.

So far it was a success buying the 8 core Mac Pro and installing by myself a 24core CPU (W3265M)

This guy basic tutorial was very helpful:

Thank you again to everyone that has information here, lots of helpful tips.

How did you clean the thermal paste off?

I was thinking about the 28-core just because, but decided against it for video editing needs specifically in Premiere Pro because the program struggles to make full use of multi-core processing let alone GPU processing.

And the fact that going higher core reduces the speed of each single CPU means I am actually slowing down my processing power versus increasing it. Once there is evidence that Adobe has actually optimized their software to take advantage of cores higher than 12, I may want to upgrade this in the future. But at the same time with Apple Silicon is the horizon, Adobe may have shifted their efforts to that instead.

Perhaps FCPX and Resolve users can make better use of it?

Isopropyl Alcohol 99.8% very easy process. New thermal paste was Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. Also easy to applied. This guy has a link to help applying that:

https://www.iswitcher.tips/how-to-replace-cpu-in-mac-pro-2019/

Just Scroll down.

I am not an expert in computer performance and Premiere Pro performance so I cannot coment about Premiere not using all the cores. I have seen other sites when they test PP using all 28 cores, but do not know. What I know is that during a very heavy render with 4k green screen, Cosmo II and lots more iStat shows all the cores workings. But like I said before, I could be wrong.
