Hopefully, we get some gold out of this. I want to get studded leather armor (45GP) and a rapier (25GP). Using a shield, I can get my AC up to 17.

*To myself: A rapier? What foppish but fashionable blade is this? Has he taken complete leave of his senses?

Beautiful, yes, exquisitely forged in the dwarfish mines, and most stylish when thrust forward for the épée stroke, but….dare I say it, hardly practical unless one desires to swagger outside of the taverns of some of our less cultured urban spaces, where students and idiotic young men with more money than either sense or nascent facial whiskers are to be found……

Whispers an oath directed at Oghma: Those blades break and splinter horribly when confronted by something nasty, smelling of powerful sorcery and redolent with the scent of brute force, yet infused with foul power and the savage strength of something magically constructed….

Now, gold coin in exchange for rare books, and crackling parchment, and rich, flowing ink, and well crafted pens……now, that is quite something else entirely.*

What better weapon for the dashing hero of the people :).

Portia quickly attacks the fallen goblin behind Syllin.

*** CHECK ***
The goblin only has an AC of 12 because it dropped its shield. Portia has +5, so:

Portia: 17

Her damage output is 1d6 + 3, so no need to roll. The goblin is now dead.
*** CHECK ***

After a few quick stabs, the goblin stopped moving. The goblin fighting Claus spitted a curse and made another thrust with its scimitar --

*** CHECK ***
Claus has an AC of, and the goblin has +4, so:

Goblin: 6
*** CHECK ***

-- and it was once again parried by Claus' sword.

The goblin behind the fire screeches a curse in goblin and runs up the natural stairs to the upper ledge. It kicks its former leader's body, which falls ten feet onto the lower level, landing with an audible crunch. The goblin then grabs Sildar Hallwinter's hair, and drags him over to the ledge. The goblin positions Hallwinter, so that he is only prevented from falling because he is being held by the goblin -- any attacks on the goblin will cause it to lose its grip and Hallwinter will fall ten feet to the ground below.

In common, it shouts down "I leader now! Yeemik leader no more! We negotiate! Or human fall down and die!"

>>> Turn order again, for the new page: So the turn order is: Syllin, Bartholomeus, Portia, 4x Goblins, Veit and Claus.

>>> @twietee you're up!

whispers to ss > Syllin, I think it's best you use your diplomatic talent and convince him in his native tongue that we are here to free that human. And that he wouldn't be the first goblin we let alive because he helped us - contrary to those that opposed and fought us and would be extremely hard to be pieced together..

no idea if I would be more convincing due my talents, that goblin speaks somewhat common, so if that would be the case i'd do it myself and try to convince him

Ok, I recall that I'm somewhat a wise and extremely charismatic dwarf, so I will do the diplomacy myself. (Note: I'm not sure if I just should use "command" - could fail and one word is sort of difficult in this situation, who knows what he'll do if I command him to retreat for example).

> "Yeemik. You are the leader here? Good. We only speak with leaders. Goblin grunts just get punished and smashed.

*stomps with the hammer on the ground*

The goblins you see here? - We smashed 'em.
The goblins on the bridge? - We smashed 'em.
The wolves in the cave? - We smashed 'em.
The goblins at the entrance? - We smashed 'em.
The goblins ambushing the road? - We smashed 'em.
Except one - the one that lead us here. He is still alive. We let him free.

Do you want to survive and be a leader for more than one brief moment? Let the human "go".
Yeemik, you are smart - like a leader. Don't be stupid - like a grunt.

And if you happen to know about the dwarf ... help us find him and you will profit - like a king!"
[doublepost=1458723741][/doublepost]While talking, I will slowly come forward - readying myself to jump further to soften the fall of Hallwinter in case he gets dropped.

Murmurs approvingly: Very good, Veit.

Shall I repeat the above in the strangled tongue of the goblins?

And, an aside: How many more of them are said to……remain…... around these caves? Have we accounted for the entire band, or are there a few more lurking in hidden spots?

(Of the goblins around the fire, two of the four have now expired. Portia killed one, - the one I was fighting - and Bartholomeus killed another). One has grabbed the unfortunate, but still soundly asleep Sildar Hallwinter, and claimed leadership, saying he wishes to negotiate with us.

Where is the final one?)

Were there 4 or 5 goblins at the fire + the leader? Because four are dead now in total. I believe the one I'm talking to is at 2 HP (Portia once more - badass halfling I have to say!).

Five goblins were sitting at the fire, plus the leader.

I think that there are two left. Agreed, Portia did brilliantly.

2 goblins left, the new 'leader' and the one fighting with Claus, both at full health

status update round 2
Syllin: HP 8/8, AC 15 (with mage armor) by the fire, attacks goblin 1, hit, 5 damage
Count: HP 12/12 AC 17, by the fire, attacks goblin 2, hit, killed
Portia: HP 9/9 AC 14, by the fireattacks goblin 1, hit, killed
†(Goblin1: dead by the fire)
†(Goblin2: dead by the fire)

Goblin3: HP 7/7, AC 14, on ledge, holding Sildar Hallwinter hostage
Goblin4: HP 7/7, AC 14, by entrance, attacking Claus
†(Goblin5: dead by the fire)
†(Goblin6 [Yeamik]: dead on the ledge)

>Veit: HP 9/11, AC 18, talking to goblin3
Claus: 12/12, AC 14, by entrance, attacking goblin4

we are doing good. 14 gobblers and 3 howlers down and nary a scratch :)

14? Where did that statistic come from?

Or, are you counting dead goblins from the time of the original ambush? (The ambush where those miscreants slaughtered my palfrey).

Anyway, two remaining here, in this room, for us to deal with.

BOOM. I'm on a roll! I dare more goblins to come at me!

*To myself: Hm. I'm sure we will manage to satiate your thirst for goblin blood. Something tells me that there are more of the blighters about.*

yep, from the beginning
ambush: 4 goblins (3 dead, 1 captured)
blind: 2 goblins
doghouse: 3 wolves
bridge: 4 goblins (1 guard + 3 patrol)
eating room: 6 goblins ( 4 dead, 2 remaining)

Put Portia on a leash while I'm being diplomatic here!

I am wondering whether that character - who has assumed the mantel of leadership - wishes merely to save himself, or may seek to include his belligerent comrade beside us, here, and still engaged in combat.

Secondly, let us be alert to the fact that this might be a diversionary tactic with the intent of serving to distract us; how many of these miscreants might still remain alive and at large in these caves?

And thirdly, should misunderstandings arise in your exchange, I shall be more than happy to supplement and support it with a - perhaps slightly terse - translation.

Meanwhile, - when it is my turn - I will contemplate stepping to the fire, and gingerly removing Sildar Hallwinter's smoking limb from the fire, directing a cantrip of cleansing Prestidigitation to the severed limb, and, indeed, to my own hand as well.

*To myself: A proper summary with an abacus count of the dead. Something tells me my Grandsire's approval would have been fulsome.*

This is Dwarfish for, "Thanks Portia, for saving my life over and over", right?

Sort of.

But actually the "Portia - whoa, what a badass halfling she is!" was about that already. Now I'm basically trying to be an elder statesman here, Dr. Veit Frostbeard investigating and don't you dare compromise my mission!*

*puts on glasses*

* no need to comment on my combat-rolls here - I blame ravenvii for playing favorites! :D

>don't let them on you understand goblin yet. they might let something useful slip

SS, you see, I do think it's situation like this that you want to keep your magical slot. You were able to put a good numbers of target to sleep, and if you think that the goblin might do something stupid with the captive, your magic missiles will absolutely hit (there's some magical protection against that spell, but very very few) and there's a very low probability that the goblin will survive.

Alright. Gritting my teeth, I retrace my steps again, this time back to the opening of the cave and examine the noisome goblins who are sitting around the camp-fire, relishing their loathsome and repellant cooking, and chortling to one another in their foul tongue of Goblindegook.

Off to the side, Sildar Hallwinter lies, barely conscious of what is happening, - a brief sleep will be a benison and perhaps, a boon for him in his current condition.

With an eye half shut in order to perfect a firm focus on the one seated farthest from me, I raise my hand - a pinch of fine sand already in it, removed from my pouch, - and proceed to cast a fluid but precisely aimed Sleep Spell at him.

Thereupon, I take a step back, and prepare to watch the effects of the Sleep Spell ripple noiselessly outwards towards his feasting, but foul comrades.

Never has the phrase "it's a roll of the dice" meant so much. :D

"I not Yeemik dumb ass! --" the goblin points at the mangled body that he kicked off the ledge "-- That Yeemik! I leader now!"

*** CHECK ***
Since you've antagonized the goblin by calling him Yeemik, persuading him is going to be hard. I'll call this a DC 15, not DC 20, since goblins are kinda dumb. You have a +1, so:

Veit: 4
*** CHECK ***

"We negotiate! Or Hallwinter die!" the goblin shouts down. "I want be leader of hideout! Me! No Klarg!"

The goblin takes out his scimitar and points the blade down at the party. "Kill Klarg! Human live! That deal!"

The goblin engaged with Claus takes a wary step back, watching the party closely.

>>> The battle is over -- for now. @Plutonius are you sure?
