"If he live, I die! No matter!" the goblin said, with surprising insight. "You want human live? Or no?"

> you are sorely mistaken if you think we are just going to do your biddings.
And we are certainly not going to leave you here alone with the human
If you want to get rid of this Klarg so bad, you and your buddy will have to lead us to him and help us fight him.
If we win, we shall take our due, and leave with the human, then you shall be in charge here if you so desire.
what say you?

Unfortunately, we didn't really try persuasion - we tried bluffing and blustering. Intimidation didn't really work, true.
ravenvii did a persuasion check on Veit's attempt, so we did tried persuasion already, technically.

But with an increasingly irked goblin, unfortunately.

A softly spoken aside: Agreed, he cannot be left alone with Master Hallwinter, - whose rescue is of some urgency. Indeed, he must be persuaded to accompany us, - he and his comrade - or, or,………otherwise…..rendered harmless.

The goblin looked at you, a slight uncertainty creeping on its face. Then determination took over. The goblin points at its comrade on the lower level and shouts down, "He go with! He help kill Klarg! He tell me! I stay!"

The goblin narrows his eyes at Veit. "Cleric! I let heal human! So he not die before kill Klarg!"

Then he utters something in goblin that Syllin translated, loosely, as "In a show of good faith, yes?"

> if you come too, we will have better chance to kill Klarg.
one of your comrades told us there is loot somewhere in the hideout.
If you help us, you can have a part of whatever we find. otherwise, we keep everything.
and i will personally give you one extra gold piece for the cripple.
i give you my word

The goblin stares down at you, greed creeping into its face. "How I know you no kill me in back?

Replies - sotto voce - in dwarvish: If needs must, I can use Magic Missile…...which cannot miss and will…..almost certainly kill him, causing him to release his grip on Hallwinter.

Now, I am a little concerned about his good faith in this endeavour. Greed versus A Different Kind Of Greed, all tempered and seasoned with mild sadism.….

*raising my chin, squaring my shoulders, pride flickering in my eyes
> Because I am Count Bartholomeus Edmond Lochaber the Third, Earl of Corlinn Hill,
and I only have one word.

Sotto voce, in dwarvish, still: Presumably something along the lines of "My honour"….

*shakes head*

I'm going up, examining Hallwinter. I take it he's in such a bad shape that couldn't be treated without some help of the gods?
If so I will cast cure wounds on him while the goblin grabs the coin.

>"let's move and get this over with - you too goblin."

I'll raise the sleeping body and put him over my shoulder.

>yes.
and i toss the coin to the goblin.
The goblin grabs the coin in mid-air and beams with visible greed. "Wartgutter! You lead to Klarg!"

When Wartgutter spits with defiance and says something in goblin, the leader shouts back a threat. Angrily, Wartgutter stomps past the party. "Follow!" Wartgutter shouts, his voice dripping with hatred.

as we are getting ready to follow Wartgutter, i sheath my greataxe and recover the javelin and the shield, then don the shield and take out the scimitar, which i hold in front of me (it should still have light on it)

then to the other goblin
>let's go, Screech

You walk up the natural steps, watching the leader goblin warily. You reach Hallwinter, and see that he is in much worse shape that you would've imagined. He is bloodied, his armor and tunic was torn and bent, a couple of teeth are missing from his mouth, and there are signs of torture all over his body. And a leg is missing from his lower half.

You bent over the man, and realize that there is no possible way you could repair his leg. His leg, unlike Claus' hand, was not freshly cut off, nor was it in immaculate shape. This is beyond your abilities as a medic and a cleric.

But you do for him what you can, repairing his broken bones and closing his wounds.

Cure wounds is 1d8 + 3:

Veit: 2

You heal Hallwinter for 2 + 3 + 3 = 8 hp.

Cure wounds is 1d8 + (I'm in a rush and forgot what the hell the Cleric's spell modifier is -- assume it's added, and I'm a bit confused about that divine thingy, is that another +3?):

Veit: 2

You heal Hallwinter for _ hp (to be edited after clarification on the modifier + divine thingy)
*** CHECK ***

i can help with that.
Veit casts on wisdom, so it is +3, and he is a Dsciple of Lfe, which is +2+spell level, so another +3.
total 2+3+3=8 hp back

can Saildar move? can we improvise a clutch out of stuff/furniture in the room? Claus is proficient in carpentry, i believe, and we have Veit's handaxes

*To myself: Well, Oghma, have you heard even the merest whisper of that? 'Divine Thingy'?

Again, I remember my Grandsire's facial expression when he asked me to consider the question of whether the gods, and yes, - Oghma was mentioned in that sentence - when he wondered whether the gods laughed and at what such a being might choose to laugh?*

Is it too late to make a wisdom (?) check on whether it's likely true what the goblin told us or not? After all this could very well be a trap and lead us to a couple of more goblins than were mentioned.

at least Portia would get some enjoyment outta that I suppose. :D

Loosen up elf, that was an attempt at humor, based on the dismal dice rolls the party has been experiencing. :p

*To myself: Surveys carnage, not least that hideously charred limb that was once the sturdy thigh and athletic leg of Sildar Hallwinter. This is not - any longer - the Library of the Wizard University, All Hallowes Sages and Scholars. It is, I whisper in delayed shock, a dramatically different world.

After countless hours of discordant noises, jangling shouts, echoes, and lupine howls, whimpers of pain, and the sheer, shaming, intoxicating rush of the deliciously savage but excruciatingly guilty pleasure of bloodlust - my ears crave the soothing sound of the Elven Esoterick High Barockque Operatick Tradition.

Had I thought to add my triple keyed Elven flute to my saddlebags, I could have sought refuge in the sweet - some would say soporific sounds…..of Elven Esoterick High Barockque Operatick Musick - rather than the raucous coarse shouts of barked laughter and sworn curses, and the unfettered sadism and murdered consonants and strangled vowels of Goblindegook, enlivened and inspired by wanton and despicable cruelty.*
