I think Portia (@Moyank24
) would want the tavern for gambling (and liberating loose change pouches :D) after she eats. It sounds like the inn will do fine for the rest of us.

You are right, sir.

After I've had my fill of the stew, I'm going to drink a mug or 4, and try my luck against some of the easier....marks in town.

Do you play a skilled but honest game or something else? As I see it, if they misunderstand your skill level, that would be a valuable lesson you are teaching, if honestly applied. :)

Sorry, having guests make for little time on MR..

@ravenvii , can you please give us / me a short idea how I have to imagine the town and specifically regarding the tavern we are currently sitting in (not sure if we do but I assume so)- e.g. do I have to imagine a town/tavern full of humans like I do now or is it completely mixed like our party? Sorry, if that has been established already. Thanks!

After combing my beard for a considerable time span observing the people at the inn, I will have a hot mug with my friends and then go on a stroll myself. I will check the barn where our stuff is kept whether it is save and sturdy locked and then am loosely heading towards the Sleeping Giant.

Yes, I imagine that we are all comfortably seated, contentedly eating lamb stew, and sipping our ale, telling our travellers' tales and listening, in turn, to local lore.

I imagine that the Sleeping Giant might well repay a brief visit - especially if it attracts a more colourful - and perhaps quite varied - clientele than is found here, in the Stonehill Inn.

@twietee, we are currently eating and drinking in an inn.

I recommend that we skip the Sleeping Giant (tavern) tonight until we get our stuff sold and get paid. Let's put anything new on hold until we tie up any lose ends from the last adventure. The Sleeping Giant will be there tomorrow night, we will have some money in our pockets, there will be less danger if we all go, and we will not have to worry about losing our cart and the money owed us if something untold happens at the Sleeping Giant (a possible scenario if we have a sneaky cardsharp halfling (@Moyank24) there). Besides, @ravenvii is tied up for the next two weeks so let's give him one thing to do at a time :).

@ravenvii, orders: sit at the table with the farmer.
Say to the farmer: "Good sir, how may I help the sister ?"

"The name's Narth. You look like a real upstandin' gent right there. You see... Sister Garaele -- that's the Sister's name, Sister Graele -- she oversees the Shrine of Luck -- that's that shrine that's right outside the door -- so the Sister recently left town with no word. We got a bit worried, you see, but she came right back. But she was exhausted. The feelin' not right. Ain't right at all. Hoping a upstanding sword swinger like yourself could go and see if she needs help, and do whatever it is that troubles her."

Farmer Narth takes another gulp, emptying the mug. "She lives in the house right behind the Shrine over there. She will make sure it's worth your while, helpin' her. Forsooth, those Redbrands ain't gonna help her none."
* as i attack the ale

> AAhhhh! yes, yes, this smells absolutely delicious!
Syllin, before you go and enjoy the tub, maybe we should pay this good man for the food and ales from our common funds and then proceed to split the remainder?
So, master Stonehill, tell me more about the troubles that affect you and the town. Maybe we can be of some assistance.
You don't seem to have a high opinion of your current Townmaster. How so?
We were planning on speaking to him in the morning, as we think our effort in securing the safety of the Triboar Trail might warrant some recognition of the, ehm, monetary type.
[doublepost=1460754646][/doublepost]

yes, although by the little she has told us about her previous interactions here in Phandalin, i was of the impression she wanted to keep it a little on the low, at least initially

As Stonehill brings out the stew and eleven mugs of freshly poured ale, to the appreciation of the patrons, he pauses -- "Ah, do the others want the stew, as well? That will be one silver piece each, if it pleases you?"

As the ale is passed out to the patrons and placed on the empty table for the adventurers, one of the patrons, a woman, grabs the ale from front of another patron next to her, a young boy, and stands up. "Toblen! Just because those... guests buy drinks doesn't mean Pip can drink! Thank you... sir, but please, keep your coin to yourself. In fact, I would prefer not to drink another ale tonight."

Visibly embarrassed, Stonehill grabs the two mugs "my, ah, wife is right, of course, my son is entirely too young to drink! I do apologize, I get... overzealous in pleasing new guests sometimes!"

>>> if you get stew for all party members (5), then that'll be 4 more silver pieces in addition to the price I quoted above, totalling in 5 sp and 36 cp (9 mugs of ale).

You survey your surroundings before you enter the inn. The town is a rough-and-tumble town, with single-story and two-story buildings clustered around the town center. You saw from your entrance into the town that there are several farmhouses in the outskirts, surrounding the center. It wasn't much of a town, really, but better than you'd expect, with it being outside of any center of civilization and all.

The inn itself is a relatively cozy inn, if not small. There are six patrons in the common room, all human. There are two men, three women and a young boy, all wearing commoner clothes and with the look of a long day's work behind -- and ahead -- them. Claus is sitting opposite one of the men -- a farmer from the looks of his clothes -- who is talking to him animatedly.

I pass whatever of our money is needed to Bartholomeus to pay for the needful (are we buying stew as well, for the inn's patrons? Nicely slipped in there, @ravenvii .)

Oh, well. If they are fed and watered they are more likely to be of a loquacious and friendly disposition.

Curious exchange, there, between Master Stonehill and the lady he wasn't entirely sure was his lady wife. Hm.

As mentioned earlier, perhaps another round of drinks for the patrons (and ourselves) strikes me as a good idea, too.

Ser Bartholomeus (@Don't panic ) suggested that Veit (@twietee) remain with us this evening and that we will all explore the town together tomorrow when we have sold the contents of our cart, and have been reimbursed by Sildar.

I don't believe a Church is required for Veit to benefit, (Cleric) or am I wrong in that assumption? But bending a knee can never hurt. :)

It more from a role playing standpoint. A cleric gets much of their support from their church. It also helps determine who their friends and enemies are.

I equate it to a mages guild for wizards, a fighters guild for fighters, or a thieves guild for thieves.

@ravenvii, orders: I thank Narth and I tell him that I will talk to Sister Graele in the morning. Join back with the group for some stew and ale and then head to bed early.

"Ah! Thank you sir, the Sister is dear to here town, be a shame if we couldn't help back, you know?" the farmer nods and raises his second mug of ale in thanks.

You'll all be thrilled to know that I have once again survived another Houston floodpocolypse! Didn't have power at all yesterday and no school for the kids or work for me so I'm just getting back to speed.

@ravenvii If I want to play cards at the tavern, do I have to give you orders to do so?

Thanks!

And, @ravenvii, having eaten a plate of stew, and sipped one ale, now is a good time - I think - to take the opportunity of attending to my swift ablutions.

The lukewarm water is not an issue, as I have means at my disposal to make the water both warm and clean. A swift bath - followed by a brief return to the common room for a second ale and to see what further transpires.

From the news, it looked like a lot of water.

I suggest that you (Portia) stay at the inn tonight (no tavern) until we liquidate the loot and get paid. We don't want to do anything right now that possibly might lose us the loot and the money we are owed. I think we are all heading over there tomorrow.

You probably guessed but I was thinking of a spell acquisition standpoint.

Everything is good now, though? It's still scary flooded in some parts of town.

I lost my power sunday night, then a transformer blew last night a few hours after the power had come back on.

Thanks, you're probably right. I shall do that.

I will eat my soup, drink my ale and retire to the inn like a good halfling!

good to hear everything is mostly good now.
i've been in NOLA for a conference for a few days, but here the weather was decent to good.
stranded at the airport now, where a combination of incompetence at security (almost two hours line at 4:30 am, unfrigginbelievable) and massive *******ness by the gate gestapo staff ensured i and a bunch of other people missed our flights.
yay!

I've got internet obviously, only lost power for a few hours during the event. so it's good for me, but I can't say it's good for those with water in their homes, or cars floating down the bayou. Portions of Houston is very susceptible to flooding (said for the benefit of those unfamiliar). :(

Did I ever tell the story of the friend's drowned Thunderbird?

do any of the other patrons seem interested in having a conversation?
Does the innkeeper answer my query about the townmaster?
>>> okay, I'll assume you said yes to having five stews. That's 5 silver pieces, plus 36 copper pieces. @Scepticalscribe take that much out of the communal fund.

As Toblen brings in the stew for the rest of the party, he looks at you. "Those Redbrands, they are supposed to protect us, but they -- no. It's not my place to say, sir. I am just a simple innkeeper." He bows and returns to stand by the entrance.

You look around the common room. The farmer has just wrapped up his conversation with Claus and is enjoying his drink. The other patrons nod at you with gratitude for the drink. The innkeeper's wife eyes you suspiciously, but the son seems eager to spin up a tale for the newcomers.

ah, sorry, i thought Syllin had answered to that, but of course we all want to eat.

[to the Innkeeper]
> Wait, who? Redbrands? Never heard about them.
Who are they? Who leads them? what kind of troubles are they causing you?

I thought I had , too.

Let us therefore assume that the stews - and tankards of foaming ales - have been served - and paid for.

When I read the Count trying to talk to the innkeeper's son, this is what I thought of. No wonder why the mother is worried :D.

Airplane, another great movie:
