Okay: Which do you recommend in this instance? You seem to suggest the use of Burning Hands over Magic Missile.

Everything in this game is probabilities, statistics, and mostly averages.

Combat in this game is usually played on a map with figurines so you can plan your attacks.

In combat in this game since we don't hav a battle map, you should do the following.

1) Determine (guess) the strength of the enemy. In our case, the person that attacked me took two attacks which seems to indicate that he is a second level fighter (a second level fighter can take two attacks once / day). A fighter has 1 - 10 hit points / level which averages out to (1 + 10) / 2 = 5.5 hit points / level. Without a constitution bonus, a second level fighter would have an average of (5.5 x 2) = 11 hit points. He probably has a +1 bonus / level so assume he has (11 + 2) = 13 hit points.

The other enemies may not be second level but we should probably assume they are.

2) Determine what options you have. Since they might have 13 hit points each, you probably don't want to use a cantrip.

To me, it looks like you have the option of Magic Missile, Burning Hands and Sleep. Since we aren't using a battle map, the first thing you have to do is ask Ravenvii how many enemies you can effect without affecting party members for your AOE (area of effect) spells (i.e Burning Hands and Sleep). Until he tells you how many enemies you can safely target, you will have no idea of the best option.

3) Calculate the average damage for the spells you are considering.
Magic missile does 3d4 + 3 (6 to 15 damage) so it does an average of (6 + 15) / 2 = 10.5 to a single enemy.
Burning hands does 3d6 (3 to 18 damage) so it does an average of (3 + 18) / 2 = 10.5 to all enemies attacked (don't use burning hands in a building or you will burn it down :) ).

Based on this, you can see that Magic Missile is better if you are attacking one enemy.
Burning hands is better if you are attacking multiple enemies.

For your homework, I'll let you calculate the affect of your sleep spell.
Sleep affects 5D8 (5 to 40) hit points.
a) What is the average number of hit points sleep affects ?
b) Assuming that the enemies have 13 hit points, how many enemies will that affect ?

Burning hands does 3d6 damage to all Syllin hits (average 10.5 to every target). Magic Missile does 3d4 + 3 to a single target (average 10.5 to one target). They do get a save vs burning hands for half damage but the save number should be high.

Based on your description of our elf's spells, multiple targets seems to be the most bang for the effort which actually surprises me a little. :)

Well, then, let us take it that I am asking @ravenvii how many of the thugs I can target without hitting my comrades?

Or, maybe that should fall back a little, so that they are behind me when I cast the spell?

Ravenvii will tell you if you need to move before you cast (or if we need to move before we attack).

Sleep is another possible spell (have you done the homework I gave you :) ?) .

Sleep affects 5D8 (5 to 40) hit points.

b) Assuming that the enemies have 13 hit points, how many enemies will that affect ?

No, I haven't.

Actually, I am pretty busy - and will be busier still over the coming weeks.

Sorry, I'm just trying to help you understand the game so you can make your decisions.

answer -
a) (5 + 40) / 2 = 22.5
b) 22.5 / 13 = 1.73 (or one enemy (round down)).

Freeze frame... until the return of interested participants. This is not be telling you to be quiet. :D

@Scepticalscribe here's the approximate configuration of the battlefield. The small circle with an X is Claus, the blank circles are the ruffians, and the big circle with an + is the rest of the party (i.e. where you are).

Folks, I just tried accessing @Don't panic 's profile, and it is inaccessible. I think this is the new telltale that a user has been banned.

No. He has merely limited who can view his full profile, which is an entirely different matter.

For example, you can view the standard (not full) page of his profile (which would not be possible had a suspension kicked in), his 'rank' is clearly stated (it would read 'suspended' if something of the sort had happened), and it is possible to PM him if necessary.

Ah, okay, never mind....

I suspect that he may be away - perhaps with family - in a remote spot that is not connected.

Sometimes, switching off is a welcome experience. And sometimes, for a variety of reasons, dropping out of sight for a while, is no bad thing.

Your turn in the battle.

Remind me again: Everyone seems to be unaccountably absent.

We are facing unlettered thugs? And my fellow halflings, knights, dwarves, are all inexplicably silent......

Yeah, his last post mentioned being away. Anyway, it's somewhat hard to determine the status of posters in this new forum software. I'll let you all get back to it.

Well, I bemoaned the absence of knights, dwarves, halflings, because it seems that I am supposed to head off into a brawl without giving sufficient thought as to how I should best handle this.
