We are facing unlettered thugs? And my fellow halflings, knights, dwarves, are all inexplicably silent......

The party has encountered five ruffians. Claus is wounded and lying on the ground next to the drunk. We rolled initiative and you got the honor of going first. You can either do nothing, talk with them, attack them with a weapon, or attack them with a spell. People have not said anything yet because it's not their turn yet :).

There is no wrong answer so just do what you want to do.

@ravenvii supplied a map of the battle in post 2261.

Yeah, his last post mentioned being away. Anyway, it's somewhat hard to determine the status of posters in this new forum software. I'll let you all get back to it.

If you hear anything, let us know.

A party member has been attacked. I suspect trying to talk is a lost opportunity to land a blow, thus puts the party at a disadvantage, hint hint. :)

@Scepticalscribe this may help :D:

Time, then, to take contemplate taking action.

Will Claus be affected by any spell I cast (other than sleep), or does his prone position on the ground protect him from a magical assault?
He can be affected, but if you use a spell with a cone effect area, you can hit ruffians 3 - 5 without touching Claus.

@Scepticalscribe said she's busy until next week. I'll be busy as well, with the move and starting a new job, so that's pretty good timing.

But let us know when we're ready to go, @Scepticalscribe. :)

Well, @ravenvii, now, seems as good time as any.

Gritting my teeth, I take a deep breath, and hold it for a second, seeking that internal stillness that precedes and best aids, the successful casting of a spell.

Then, having gathered my thoughts, I proceed to take a brisk two or three steps forward, moving out from the group, placing myself in front of my comrades, and coming to a halt just immediately ahead of them.

Looking at the group of thugs, I hold my hands together in front of me, thumbs touching, fingers spread and murmur the incantation for the spell Burning Hands, aiming it straight at them.

Hopefully, @ravenvii will complete his move soon. @Scepticalscribe will strangle me if I continue to post in the PRSI :D. In any case, I would rather post in this thread.

A heads-up: I'll be away from this week end for a while; thus, it is possible - to pretty likely - that I will not be posting prolifically (or much at all, the spellcheck suggested 'politically' for 'prolifically') for some time.

Indeed, if @ravenvii does not return, you will soon have PRSI - plus here - to yourself.

I hope you are doing something fun if you are traveling. It should be awhile before we reach the top of the round (your turn) (you may kill them all with your burning hands). We will go to see the sister next so I hope you have a little time to converse with her.

I'm also more concerned about @Don't panic and his absence.

Work. Not fun. But should be interesting.

As for my flaming hands.......well, let us see what transpires.

Before we leave the town, I would like to be able to see - and chat with - the sister - that is, Sister Garaele.

*** note that I don't have my adventure book with me, so hopefully all the numbers are accurate!

You hit ruffians 3, 4 and 5 (clockwise in the drawing I posted earlier). They all take 4d6 points of damage (since you're level 2). If they succeed with a DC 13 (8 + your Intelligence modifier, which is 3, + your proficiency bonus, which is 2) Dexterity saving throw (the ruffians have a Dexterity modifier of +2):

Ruffian 3: 14 Success
Syllin: 6 + 2 + 5 + 2 = 15 / 2 = 7
Ruffian 4: 4 Fail
Syllin: 4 + 6 + 1 + 4 = 15
Ruffian 5: 17 Success
Syllin: 1 + 6 + 3 + 6 = 16 / 2 = 8

7, 15 and 8 points of damage to ruffians 3, 4 and 5.
***

As the burning essence leave your hands in a carefully aimed cone, three ruffians, including the one who initiated the whole fight, reeled screaming as their clothing caught fire. Slapping themselves, they put out the fires quickly, leaving behind various burns of varying severeness.

*** @Huntn your turn!

Syllin: 1, 3 = 4

4, 5, 5 points of damage to ruffians 3, 4 and 5 respectively.

Syllin should have done 3d6 damage to those that failed a dexterity save and half that to those that make the save.

The handbook is at http://media.wizards.com/2015/downloads/dnd/BasicRules_Playerv3.4_PF.pdf

Burning Hands
As you hold your hands with thumbs touching and fingers spread, a thin sheet of flames shoots forth from your outstretched fingertips. Each creature in a 15-foot cone must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 3d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

The fire ignites any flammable objects in the area that aren’t being worn or carried.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 1st.

Indeed.

You don't think that I go to the trouble of invoking magic merely to singe the eyebrows and nostril hairs of a bunch of miscreants who merit a bit of chastisement?

I assume that some of these guys will carry a serious scorching as a result of this.

Thanks for the link! I'll fix that when I get a chance.

A brief nheads-up: I expect to be quite a lot less available - work related matters - for the next six weeks or so.

However, given that a number of others are hors de combat - literally and metaphorically - this should not really be an issue.

Why did no one tell me what a huge hassle it is to move into a new place?

I finally -- finally! -- got my desk set up and I can finally compute the way I want and with comfort.

But the boxes. There's so many boxes.

And in the middle of it all, I have to go to work. I literally started at my job three days after I got the keys to my apartment.

Pure craziness.

So I have no choice but to put the game on a little hiatus, at least until I get things to a reasonable level of livability, and get settled down to a routine that resemble something I'd call 'normal' :D

@Scepticalscribe is busy until about four weeks from now (correct me if I'm wrong), so I'll aim to start the game up again in about three to four weeks. Hope you're all okay with that, @Plutonius @Moyank24 @twietee @Huntn @Don't panic

Also: I haven't heard from @Don't panic at all either. I hope everything's okay and you're just busy with life like I am!
