Okay! Updated the numbers in @Scepticalscribe's attack (see post #2291).

@Huntn you're up!

My apologies, I'm traveling today, get back tonight, and should have a savvy ephemeral jujitsu type move ready to go sometime tomorrow.

Btw, I assume I'm still a short and stocky character? I've not reviewed the thread yet, if that has the answer. What's the disposition on DP's character?

Hm, @Don't panic doesn't seem to have posted or logged on for a number of months; I sincerely hope that he is fine, and simply inundated with stuff, (personal and professional both, I suspect) rather than truly struggling.

For now, I would be okay with @ravenvii playing his role, in case he returns anytime soon. Meanwhile, if his character has to withdraw, I'd prefer that we consider letting it be a temporary withdrawal, rather and anything more permanent, so that he can return at short notice, if need be.

Have you included the updated (statistic) amendments that @Plutonius suggested in a post immediately following that?

It looks good to me now. Very good job on the burning hands spell. I was hoping it would take some brigands out but they are they are pretty tough.

@Huntn, you should probably attack the most wounded brigand rather then heal me. We need to take some down.

Yep, you're still Dalo. My plan is that you will keep Dalo, and I will role play Bartholomeo through the next dungeon, and then Batholomeo and Dalo will leave the party, and you'll take on the role of another human fighter (don't worry about being behind stats-wise -- I will start your new character at the same level as the others).
[doublepost=1475422916][/doublepost]
No, I wasn't actually discussing money: Rather, what I meant was what @Plutonius had suggested about the (enhanced) power of the burning hands spell that I cast (that took forever to take effect)....
Oh, yes -- see the post I referenced (I edited it).

Er, I thought I was Syllin.....

Bifur CU Oval.sm4.png And then...
Agreed by all to be brave, debonair and graceful, backed up with the practiced assurance of casting, not wishing to put myself in a likely position to receive a loose fist to the mandible, a flurry of the hands and a brief lively and enchanting whistle is heard, plenty to draw the eyes of wayward ruffians, followed by a quick under armed bowling-like movement sends Cure Wounds coursing at the prostrate tall guy, (the man's name is Claus I think...) followed by an audible whoosh that blows everyone's hair astray!

Posts not in order

<Point of Order>
Despite my sincere plea for advice regarding L1 Cleric Spells over in the support thread a week ago that no one saw fit to answer :p, I'll presume the following:
I know 3 Cantrips I can cast at will (1 per turn if I wish)
* Light
* Sacred Flame
* Thaumaturgy

I have 4 spells prepared of which I can cast 2 per day without rest (correct)?
* Cure Wounds- Touch, heal = 1d8 + your spellcasting ability modifier. (Described as domain spell always available?) Described as a domain spell, always prepared... does this mean I can actually have 5 spells prepared?
* Guiding Bolt- Ranged 120’ = 4d6 radiant damage, which grants advantage to the next attack against a target during the current turn.
* Healing Word- Ranged 60’ heal HP= 1d4 + your spell casting ability modifier
* Inflict Wounds- melee (touch)= 3d10 necrotic damage

In addition I have a:

* Hand Axe 1d8+2 bludgeoning, attack bonus +4. Which can be thrown once before being retrieved.
* A personalized named Thorium-guilded Warhammer- 1d6+2 slashing, attack bonus +4.

My theory on combat unless there is a reason to take out a separate target/threat, I will tend to project power onto a previously damaged target for the sake of eliminating threats as quickly as possible.

Update: Corrected.

Party Status:
Dungeon Master: Ravenvii
1. Moyank24 - Portia Thorngage the Female Halfling Rogue
2. Don't panic - Bartholomeus Lochaber the Male Human Fighter
3. Plutonius - Claus Fletcher the Male Human Fighter
4. Scepticalscribe - Syllin Siannodel the Female Elf Wizard
5. twietee - Veit Frostbeard Male Dwarf Cleric
6. Huntn- Dalovraeg Whulgerlug Battlehammer Male Dwarf Cleric

Clause Steps into a big squishy one!

Blank Diagram - Page 1.png
Post 2261
Where am I? I assume the big circle...
Among taunts and insults from the ruffians, Claus steps to help the fallen drunk to his feet -- with effort, as he kept stumbling and falling.

"What you helping the drunk for, puppy?" one of them spat at Claus. Another ruffian suddenly stepped forwards and gave the drunk man a shove, sending him sprawling once again. Two thugs begin to kick the downed drunk as the other three slowly step towards Claus threateningly.

"Scared, little puppies? Why don't you help us practice our fists?" the ruffian swaggers towards Claus, and suddenly takes a swing with his fist.

***
Claus has an AC of 14, and the ruffian has a +0 without a weapon. There is no surprise, as an attack is expected.

Ruffian: 10
***

Claus dodges, and the clumsy swing misses. The ruffian suddenly follows up with a second swing --

***
Ruffian: 20

Ouch. Only 1 damage, but he hit your head hard enough to render you immobile. You will skip the first round of combat.
***

Claus staggers from the blow to the head, and trips over the drunk man's leg, sending Claus stumbling and falling onto the ground.

***
Battle! Initiative time (it's been a while!):

Bartholomeo: 1 - 1 = 0
Veit: 7 - 1 = 6
Dalo: 18 - 1 = 17
Portia: 5 + 3 = 8
Syllin: 16 + 2 = 18
Claus: 13 + 3 = 16

Ruffian 1: 9 + 2 = 11
Ruffian 2: 3 + 2 = 5
Ruffian 3: 9 + 2 = 11
Ruffian 4: 10 + 2 = 12
Ruffian 5: 18 + 2 = 20

Tie-breaker:

Ruffian 1: 18 + 2 = 20
Ruffian 3: 6 + 2 = 8

So the order is: Ruffian 5, Syllin, Dalo, Claus, Ruffian 4, Ruffian 1, Ruffian 3, Portia, Veit, Ruffian 2, Batholomeo.
***

The thug behind the attacker rushes up to the fallen Claus, drawing his shortsword. Swinging at Claus --

***
The shortsword gives the ruffian +4 to attack, and the ruffian can attack twice per round, so:

Ruffian: 4 + 18
Ruffian: 4 + 8

One hit, one miss.

The shortsword is 1x6 + 2, so:

Ruffian: 6

8 damage to Claus, leaving him with 8 HP!
***

-- the shortsword hits Claus in the shoulder, drawing blood. The ruffian spins the sword going for another hit, but fortunately for Claus, this swing bounces off his armor harmlessly.

/////////// Overview of the Tactical Situation and Reassurances ////////////
The party has encountered five ruffians. Claus is wounded and lying on the ground next to the drunk. We rolled initiative and you got the honor of going first. You can either do nothing, talk with them, attack them with a weapon, or attack them with a spell. People have not said anything yet because it's not their turn yet :).

There is no wrong answer so just do what you want to do.

In almost a vision from the future!

@Scepticalscribe your turn!

Well, I'm going out of town tomorrow, and will be back Friday night. Just a heads up! @ravenvii, now, seems as good time as any.

Gritting my teeth, I take a deep breath, and hold it for a second, seeking that internal stillness that precedes and best aids, the successful casting of a spell.

Then, having gathered my thoughts, I proceed to take a brisk two or three steps forward, moving out from the group, placing myself in front of my comrades, and coming to a halt just immediately ahead of them.

Looking at the group of thugs, I hold my hands together in front of me, thumbs touching, fingers spread and murmur the incantation for the spell Burning Hands, aiming it straight at them.

A Hush Comes from the crowd and then a cheer!
Score!

*** note that I don't have my adventure book with me, so hopefully all the numbers are accurate!

***
You hit ruffians 3,

4 and 5 (clockwise in the drawing I posted earlier). They all take 4d6 points of damage (since you're level 2). If they succeed with a DC 13 (8 + your Intelligence modifier, which is 3, + your proficiency bonus, which is 2) Dexterity saving throw (the ruffians have a Dexterity modifier of +2):

Ruffian 3: 14 Success
Syllin: 6 + 2 + 5 + 2 = 15 / 2 = 7
Ruffian 4: 4 Fail
Syllin: 4 + 6 + 1 + 4 = 15
Ruffian 5: 17 Success
Syllin: 1 + 6 + 3 + 6 = 16 / 2 = 8

7, 15 and 8 points of damage to ruffians 3, 4 and 5.
***

As the burning essence leave your hands in a carefully aimed cone, three ruffians, including the one who initiated the whole fight, reeled screaming as their clothing caught fire. Slapping themselves, they put out the fires quickly, leaving behind various burns of varying severeness.

Excellent question.

That... post was... confusing.

***
Cure Wounds is a 1d8 + your charisma modifier (1), so:

Dalo: 6

You add 7 points to Plutonius' hit points.
***

So to reiterate the initiatives (since it was rolled so long ago):

So the order is: Ruffian 5, Syllin, Dalo, Claus, Ruffian 4, Ruffian 1, Ruffian 3, Portia, Veit, Ruffian 2, Batholomeo.

So Claus is sitting out of this round, so next up are the 3 ruffians...

Growling obscenities, the rightmost ruffian charged at Syllin with his shortsword.

***
The ruffian has +4, Syllin has an AC of 12, and the ruffian can attack twice, so:

Ruffian 4: 7 + 4 = 11
Ruffian 4: 11 + 4 = 15

One fail, one success, so:

Ruffian 4: 2

He deals 4 HP of damage to Syllin.
***

Ignoring the group focused on Syllin, the ruffian who started the whole fight continued his focus on Claus, going for another swing with his shortsword --

***
Again:

Ruffian 1: 14 + 4 = 18
Ruffian 1: 6 + 4 = 10

Success and fail.

Ruffian 1: 6

The ruffian deals 8 HP of damage to Claus, leaving him with 7 HP!
***

-- and hits Claus, re-opening the wound that was just closed by Dalo' Cure Wounds.

The ruffian furtherest from Syllin, and the one who received the worst of the burn from the Burning Hand, screamed at Syllin, both in pain and anger. With a "WITCH!" the ruffian rushes her;

***
Same story:

Ruffian 3: 1 + 4 = 5
Ruffian 3: 8 + 4 = 12

Both misses. And the ruffian does 1 damage to himself.
***

but his rage made his aim poor; the sword narrowly misses Syllin's right arm. This only made the ruffian angrier. In a rage, he swings the sword back for a second attack, but the sword slipped in his grip, and the hilt hits him squarely in the nose, sending him stumbling backwards.

@Moyank24 you're up!

@Moyank24 you're up!

Really? The first part is me healing Claus. :):) The rest is historical in nature, a rehash leading up to current events and me repeating what my capabilities are so I may act like I know what I'm doing. ;)

@ravenvii, The same ruffian got 2 attacks / round on me for two rounds ?

If so, I assume all the fighters are fifth level (a second level fighter only gets the 2 attacks one time between resting).
[doublepost=1475556239][/doublepost]@Moyank24, If they are fifth level, I recommend running away :D.

Looking at post 2336, the so to reiterate the initiatives statement, you are listed right after me in turns. So according to that you, not Portia would be next? @ravenvii could you clarify why Clause is sitting out this round, incapacitated? :)

Last edited:
Yes, he was incapacitated due to the perfect 20 roll by the first ruffian.

@Plutonius the ruffian has the Multiattack action which allows them to attack twice per round.

Not arguing, but want to understand what the multi attack action is. Are you referencing surprise? My impression, which could be in error, is that surprise only happens when you unaware of an adversary and are attacked. In this case, all the adversaries are known. Can surprise be a factor here?

Same here. No complaint with the multi attack but, not knowing the rules, I was wondering if you could tell us if it's a character ability ?

@Moyank24, where are you ? Please save us :D.

My god! I'm so sorry! I turned my alerts off and I'm just seeing this started up again.

Give me a little while to catch up while I'm at work, and in the meantime just let me know what I need to do to bail everyone out of the mess they got themselves in!

Welcome back !!!

We are being attacked by ruffians. I would sneak attack either ruffian 4 (most damage) or ruffian 2 (next to attack).
