Hi Everyone,

First time poster, LONG time lurker.

I've been through this guide about 4 times in the past 48 hours or so, and I've been keeping up with the updates to the guide as well. I've also read this thread about 5 times and my problem seems to be unique (unless I somehow missed someone's post with a similar issue).

Basically, I get through the entire Jailbreak process (I am a legit AT&T customer so I am upgrading the baseband as well) and basically when I complete the guide everything seems to be working, but for some reason every time I reboot my phone, it automatically enters recovery mode (where it has the connect to iTunes icon). And I have been VERY particular about making sure I was following the instructions EXACTLY.

Independence kicks it out of recovery mode, and back to a properly working, jailbroken 1.1.3. But then the next time I reboot, same deal.

Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jw, while looking around, contemplating this long process to get my phone with fully functioning 1.1.3 jailbroken, I came across the MMi Installer Source Jailbreak. In doing so, does that mean using the method below, I could skip steps 19-25?

Please see the FAQ titled: "Can I use the Installer.app "Jailbreak 1.1.3" package released by modiphone.net instead of the complicated instructions listed here?"

You shouldn't be running into any problems that require iNdependence after you're at the 1.1.3 jailbreaking stage. I don't know what the problem is, but that's definitely not normal. Try again for the beginning?

Remember when?

Remember when Jailbreaking your phone was as easy as clicking a button on a website?

After finally succeeding a 1.1.3 Jailbreak using this method, I looked at my phone and asked, "Ok, now what?" and sadly, I can't come up with anything that made all that effort worth it. Don't get me wrong, I think iPhysics is the bomb, but geeze, all this upgrading, downgrading, terminal this, terminal that, and then upgrade again.... And what does it get me? The ability to put some 14-year-old's Simpson's theme on my phone.

So, I backed up all my Apps onto my computer, and just restored my iPhone back to normal. Let's hope the SDK allows me to install an App the same way I upload a movie to the iPhone.

Thanks for all your work guys, but dang, I bought an iPhone to make my life easier.

My installer.app was crashing whenever it got to the "installing package" so i followed the terminal commands to a T. everything worked fine but when i rebooted, the only apps that show up on my springboard are the two webclips i had on there...everything else is gone? what the hell happened?

Well, I got to the part where you copy lockdownd, and then my iPhone would not boot up. It would hang at the apple logo, or it would boot into recovery mode. I restored it with the official 1.1.3 firmware for now.

I followed the steps carefully, starting with an official 1.1.3 install with an iPhone that had 1.1.2 on it OTB.

BTW, while running the install script, it hung at:
Code:
mkdir: /private/var/logs/Baseband: File exists
so I did a hard reset and it booted into a fresh 1.1.3 install that was jailbroken (but of course, with no cell access since I am an AT&T customer).

Should I just try again?

Thanks, I'll stick to your plan, and hopefully we have this successfully done on Windows tomorrow:D

i've done this upgrade to 1.1.3 quite a few times and every time i do it i have syncing problems with itunes.

i've tried the dev teams "syncfix.sh" script which did in fact fix syncing of contacts/calendar, but doesn't touch email. Itunes says "syncing mail accounts" and then when i look on my iphone it has no email accounts at all.

has anyone else had these issues? i've followed this guide word by word.

Please can someone tell me what is safe to delete from my iPhone / directory? I updated a 1.1.2jb to 1.1.3 using the Installer.app , not Nate method. I think it left a bunch of stuff on. I have 0 space free / 267M used and the Installer.App crashes after downloading a package when it goes to install it.

Where did the temp files go that the 'Official' 1.1.3 go that were downloaded.
Is it normal to only have a 267M partition as /?

Thanks,
James

Jw, did you upgrade the baseband, and what OS were you on? Windows or Mac?

I kinda doubt that it actually hung, it was probably still processing and completing the last steps of the jailbreak. That message is normal, by the way. Try it again.

Please see this FAQ in the guide: "Whenever I try to install something in Installer.app, it gets to "Installing package" and then crashes back to the Home screen! What am I doing wrong?" The temp files are removed by the jailbreak process unlike NateTrue's release, so they don't exist anymore. That partition is just full.

Excellent! The new FAQ section answered both of my questions and fixed all my problems. Except now I have one more new problem...

Ever since I ran the "rm -R Media" command, to restore the old backup of all my stuff, my iPhone has not been showing up in iTunes. Following instructions I found on the Web, I tried uninstalling iTunes and Quicktime and Apple's Mobile Device Support, and then reinstalling iTunes, but every time I do that and plug my iPhone back in, I get a Windows popup saying "installing device driver software for Apple Mobile Device Support", then it says driver installed successfully, but my iPhone still won't show up in iTunes.

I can't seem to find any way to get it recognized by iTunes again. In addition, Windows no longer displays it as a camera in My Computer.

This pretty much sucks. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

IS THERE ANY WAY TO "PLACE" THE 1.1.3 FIRMWARE SOMEWHERE SO THAT I DONT HAVE TO DOWNLOAD IT THROUGH TERMINAL?? I ALREADY HAVE 1.1.3 ON MY COMPUTER AND THE DOWNLOAD THROUGH TERMINAL KEEPS TIMING OUT.

sorry for the all caps but no one has been answering any of my questions.

Okay, I got iTunes to find my phone again by re-deleting the Media folder (it had come back somehow).

Unfortunately.. iTunes isn't showing a backup of my old phone (which I'd called "Zakk's iPhone"), the only backup it shows available for restoration is the backup from when I set my iPhone up as a new iPhone (I named it "sdfa", just some random letters). SUCKS! Guess I have to start fresh. Oh well.

Thanks guys.

How long does it take on average? I'm pretty sure I waited at least 10 minutes after that message was displayed, and the iPhone software seemed to be frozen (the clock updated, but pressing buttons or tapping did nothing).

I will try it again when I have another day off.

Ok, I am missing the boat here. I already have 3b10 and scp'd it over again just to make sure. I did the chmod / chown. It still dies after trying to install apps. I think the problem is I have like no space left in root / and that is where it tries to put the Applications. I had 264M and after trying to install Apollo it got as far as downloading, Installing, warning, then it dies. I then check and have 267M of 267M used in /. I used to have about 10 apps installed but now have no space. Is there any way to get them to install in /var and symlink them over? Is there anything else I can delete? I went 1.1.3 -> 1.1.1jb -> 1.1.2ib -> Installer.app 1.1.3 install.

Thanks,
James

You must have not read the FAQ I linked you, or read it wrong, because that's the solution posted for that question.

The FAQ is there for a reason, folks. Please read it before you come post a question.

Thats for being patient. The part about moving Applications and ln -s jumped out. I overlooked it because it looked dangerous. I did it just as shown (copy / paste). I did the ls | grep check and everything looked fine. I must have a permissions problem now, because the applications show up, but when I click one it just dims some. Nothing runs. I still have ssh access. Here is a partial directory listing of Stocks.app. I am by no means a permission expert. I think the main app has the right permissions. I scrolled back in the buffer and all my apps were root:admin and drwxrwxr-x, but I don't know about the files in each app. I thought they would have been copied over but I guess not. Hopefully I can get past this last hurdle in time for Apple to come out with another update.

jamesarm97: Those are the same permissions as my apps and mine have worked for about 24 hours through reboots now, so I don't think permissions is the problem. Have you rebooted since doing the symlink? I can't see why it would help, but reboots sometimes fix weird things.

Yeah, rebooted several times. I guess I can try copying them back. All the application icons show up on the phone, but nothing at all works. luckily I had wifi turned on. The icons just grey out when I touch them. I have tried all permissions I can think of. I wish there was an error log of some kind I could look at.

How does your root look?:

This my 1st post

If I am using an AT&T SIM (non iPhone!), am I considered a valid AT&T

So I can update my modem firmware?

Do you think it might be something you installed that didn't take effect until you rebooted? What've you installed so far? (And yes, that's also right.)

If I am using an AT&T SIM (non iPhone!), am I considered a valid AT&T

So I can update my modem firmware?

(What is with everyone trying to find a loophole around the valid SIM provision...)

What is a non-iPhone AT&T SIM being used in an iPhone? Look, here's a good test: If you activated your iPhone via iTunes with a SIM card from AT&T or O2 or Orange or some other approved carrier I'm forgetting if there is one, then you are perfectly safe to follow the first two steps and upgrade your baseband. If you did not, this may work for you but I don't know one way or the other for sure and in order to cover my ass I'm not going to say if it'll work or not. You are free to try this guide at your leisure, but you are responsible for any results you get (not me). I'm trying to keep you from accidentally bricking your phone or making it useless to you, not trying to keep you off 1.1.3 or get you to not upgrade the baseband. If you want to play it safe, just don't upgrade the baseband and stick with 1.1.2's.
