Ok, I did a: rm /Applications
mkdir /Applications
cd /Applications
cp -r /var/root/Applications .

Rebooted and everything works. For some reason it just does not want to run any application from the symlink (ln -s) /private/var/root/Applications -> /Applications

(the only thing installed so far because there is no more space is:
Community Sources
BSD Subsystem
Installer 3.0b10)

That's weird. Try again, maybe? You're the first person I've heard this from, and it obviously works for my phone at least. Otherwise you're not gonna have any room to install apps.

Ok, here is the latest. I had enough room to install the bosstool mover. From what I read it does the same thing. It moved the Applications to /var/Applications (not /var/root/Applications), but it did show a warning, something about fstab did not have execno or noexec or something like that and had to add it. Rebooted and everything works. Now I have +17M on / and Applications are on large partition.

Thanks again for all the help.

Installer Crashes

I read the FAQ of Installer crashing when I install and followed the steps needed but it did not say "Applications -> /private/var/root/Applications"

Instead, it said this

ln -s /private/var/root/Applications /Applications
ln: /Applications: No space left on device
# ls -la / | grep Applications
drwxrwxr-x 23 root admin 782 Jan 28 19:00 Applications.old

How do I fix this problem??

Ah, I forgot about the noexec tag. Weird, I wonder why mine didn't have it.

Wow, you've got it bad. Completely out of space. Be careful when you do this...

cd /
rm -r /Applications.old
ln -s /private/var/root/Applications Applications

Ok now I had tried that but I think I screwed up my iphone and will probably have to do everything all over again.
The screen is black, no icons, the dock is there, no icons.

Did you check to make sure the link was right? Can you still SSH in?

I've been through this guide something like five times now. Most of the do-overs had to do with me screwing up. Awesome guide by the way. Anyhoo I developed a problem this morning where in iTunes all my music and pictures would copy over to my phone but when I opened Pictures/iPod nothing would show. So I thought it was the sync bug, despite the fact that I already fixed all that and my contacts were sync properly, so I tried to fix it but I got into a springboard loop of some kind so I started over with the upgrade/downgrade.

Well I finally got back into a jailbroken 1.1.3 and was trying to put it all back to its former glory when the music/picture sync bug cropped up again and I noticed that the iPhone would dim and there was no "sync in progress" screen, odd I thought, but figured it was chugging along just fine. I tired out the iTunes backup/restore fix in the FAQ but that lead me nowhere so I fiddled around by taking a picture and seeing how it saved the image. Turns out it was saving the picture in /var/root/. So on a whim I made a sym link of /var/mobile/Media -> /var/root/ and my pictures came back! I was so giddy (yeah, like a school girl).

So now I'm syncing my music all back on again and all seems well right now, I see the "sync in progress" screen and everything.

So I just wanted to throw this out there just in case anybody else had these problems or something similar or whatever. Or maybe I just needed to get it off my chest, anyway my phone is working now once again and I am a very happy guy.

i've done this upgrade to 1.1.3 quite a few times and every time i do it i have syncing problems with itunes.

i've tried the dev teams "syncfix.sh" script which did in fact fix syncing of contacts/calendar, but doesn't touch email. Itunes says "syncing mail accounts" and then when i look on my iphone it has no email accounts at all.

has anyone else had these issues? i've followed this guide word by word.

no one has had sync issues? The only thing i DIDNT do is restore my iphone from the backup. I setup as a new iphone - could this be what is causing the sync failures?

The reboot recovery mode symptom...

Hi Everyone,

First time poster, LONG time lurker.

I've been through this guide about 4 times in the past 48 hours or so, and I've been keeping up with the updates to the guide as well. I've also read this thread about 5 times and my problem seems to be unique (unless I somehow missed someone's post with a similar issue).

Basically, I get through the entire Jailbreak process (I am a legit AT&T customer so I am upgrading the baseband as well) and basically when I complete the guide everything seems to be working, but for some reason every time I reboot my phone, it automatically enters recovery mode (where it has the connect to iTunes icon). And I have been VERY particular about making sure I was following the instructions EXACTLY.

Independence kicks it out of recovery mode, and back to a properly working, jailbroken 1.1.3. But then the next time I reboot, same deal.

Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You shouldn't be running into any problems that require iNdependence after you're at the 1.1.3 jailbreaking stage. I don't know what the problem is, but that's definitely not normal. Try again for the beginning?

I also am getting the recovery mode after reboot symptom. Just like guywoodson, I followed the instructions to a "T", and I am an AT&T legitimate customer. It's a hassle to have to use iNdependence each time I reboot, especially if I'm at work and not with my laptop (which is the only place I can use iNdependence). I've done the jailbreak three times now, and at the end of the process, I still get this reboot issue.

Thanks for the guide, and for the ongoing support. Just let me know what you need from me to troubleshoot the problem.

No ready for prime time

Regardless of what many might say I still feel this is the most buggy firmware update and jailbreak yet. I've tried it 3 times each one with different fault.

I'm using a 1.1.1 OTB iPhone with iPhoneSimFree unlocking. The unlocking survives the update. First attempt resulted in a brick at the reboot stage at the end, full restore was needed. Second time all seemed to go well but then the sync problem was encountered. Nothing I did would get around this, I set the phone up as new rather than using a backup.

The biggest problem though was the fact that every reboot it went in to recovery mode. After hours of trying I'm going to try and get back to 1.1.2, right now this update is just far too buggy. I'm tired and need some rest, will check back here hopefully others will have the same issues and solutions.

P.S. I also had a struggle getting OpenSSH to appear in Installer.app, anyone have a dedicated source for it?

P.S. I also had a struggle getting OpenSSH to appear in Installer.app, anyone have a dedicated source for it?

I had trouble with this too.

The problem seems to be the coral cache version of psmxy's repository that comes as a default source (it's the source that says like http://psmxy.org.nyud.net/iphone-apps). I think it's down, or something.

Delete that one and add the direct source: http://psmxy.org/iphone-apps

They should automatically refresh, and then openssh should appear as an available package.

I think I have found the problem why no apps are successfully installing. I re-did the whole process and SSHed into my iphone. I went into /var/root and noticed I did not have a media folder. My library folder was there and had the lockdownd file in it. Is there a way I could restore my media folder? Would this allow me to install apps?

P.S. According to iTunes, I have only used 29.4 MB of "other" so no apps are taking any space.

Edit: Are you sure this is the correct version of installer because I compared it with this one from this link: http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30601
and it is different? Which one is the correct one?

Help!

Ok I've been through this guide 3 times now to a "T". I get all the way to the end, and when I try and reboot my iPhone, it never comes to the home screen. It eventually pops up to the "Connect to iTunes" logo. INdependence doesn't work when I try to use it to kick it out of this mode. I am a legitimate AT&T customer with a 1.1.1 OOTB. I had already upgraded to 1.1.3 before discovering this guide. I have the correct baseband and I'm running everything on a Powerbook G4 Mac laptop. Can anyone PLEASE help me???!

This guide is currently for Intel Mac users only. The Powerbook G4 laptop is a PowerPC-based Mac, and this jailbreak method simply won't work for you in its current state.

Sorry, Charlie ;)

I just want to ask if there's any hope for me now?

I had an OOB 1.1.2 O2 iPhone, jb and activated with a pre-pay O2 SIM.

I accidentally updated to 1.1.3, updating the modem firmware, and so now it's an iPod Touch.

Is there a fix in the works for this?

Please! :)

music failure...

Everything works great on my ipod touch after jailbreaking from 1.1.1 but none of my aac music works now. Does anyone have an antidote?

Stock at apple boot Screen.

I did everything in the guide properly. When it finished doing what it needed to do for the 1.1.3 upgrade and closed the ssh connection and rebooted my phone. It never gets passed the loading apple. After a while it will just reboot and try again. Anybody know what i can do to fix this?

Here is a log of the 1.1.3 upgrade:

Follow-up to the Reboot/Recovery Mode issue...

I also am getting the recovery mode after reboot symptom. Just like guywoodson, I followed the instructions to a "T", and I am an AT&T legitimate customer. Thanks for the guide, and for the ongoing support. Just let me know what you need from me to troubleshoot the problem.

Sbrocket, I just wanted to follow up with my reboot issue now that I've found a workaround. To avoid the recovery mode, you have to turn the iPhone off by holding down the sleep/wake button and moving the red slider, and then turn the iPhone back on via the sleep/wake button.

Brings me back to the Home screen without the need for iNdependence.
