As I needed a monitor for my 2013 13" rMBP, I decided to get Dell's new U2515H. And would like to share my experience. I also have a Dell P2415Q and was not happy trying to get it to work with 2013 13" rMBP, 30Hz refresh is too slow and I seem to personally have an issue with 52Hz ( gives me a headache ).

So the U2515H

Pixel pitch .2197 works really well with the panel resolution of 2560x1440 @ 25.4"( very sharp )

AG coating way better than P2415Q ( my opinion ) ( by far best AG coating I've experienced )
side by side the P2415Q seems "dirty"

My unit has excellent uniformity

Display seems "brighter and clearer" than P2415Q after both calibrated to same luminance. Even thought the retina effect is awesome, clarity and better AG coating made me want to use U2515H more than P2415Q @ 2560x1440 resolution.

Great real estate for coding etc, also nice for web work as graphics/images are not retina scaled.

Great for VMs or boot camp as again no scaling is performed for windows or linux.

No issues with waking from sleep, etc.

Not trying to get in to a debate on better monitor, I just have read lots of people trying to get their older hardware that does not fully support 4k to work and wanted them to be aware of this option. I understand there's no real future proofing with this monitor, but it is a viable intermediate option until 4k fully matures and or replacing of machines that fully support 4k.

It's also worth mentioning BenQ and Asus both have similar monitors coming out with a bit smaller panels ( 23.8 AU Optronics AHVA ) and even smaller pixel pitch .2058.

Thanks for this info. I also have a 13" late 2013 rMBP and was tempted with the Dell 4K monitor but concerned about the 52Mhz restriction. This looks a viable alternative. I see the U2715H is also available at 1440p so am tempted with this one as well. Any recommendations for the 25" instead of the 27" I guess the PPI is different anything else?

For me pixel pitch is too big on the 27" and I personally feel right about 27" is where sides of monitor are in peripheral vision ( my viewing distance ), so 25" seems to fit field of vision much better for me. Each person is different so can only speak from my perspective.

As for the U2715H here's a great review you might want to check out.

I just saw you're from England, I just wanted to mention that the 52Hz timing worked quite well ( other than could only get 1920x1080 highest "retina" setting) on Dell P2415Q. I had an issue with 52Hz, but have always had issues with PAL, etc other than 60Hz timings as I'm here in US and probably body just used to those timings.

Thanks for this info. I have ordered two U2515H monitors from Dell UK direct - they matched Amazon's prices who were out of stock. I hope the 13" can drive two 1440p monitors :)

i'm reading this thread from the very beginning.

I can't understand people who choose old monitors like 1440p instead of 4k because of those 8fps (52fps instead of 60 on rMBP 13).

it's usable at 48hz as well on the mac mini. when setting up the mini, the screen defaulted to 1440p and basically looked like a giant macbook air display (not crispy text). at 48hz it runs at 1080p hidpi.

Just hooked my two new P2715Q's up to my nMP.

Wow. WOW!

I can concur that the effect is comparable to what you see in the store with the 5K iMac.

I am very impressed, resolution wise.

I did run into the issue where the boot screen (FileVault) login isn't visible, I have to log in and then they pop up after the OS boots. Maybe that can be fixed by Apple, but it's not a huge issue.

I'm still cleaning up the mess and organizing my cables, but figured I'd share.

Hahaha, yeah the quality it's amazing! I am not an expert but I think they are very good screens! I amb delighted as well (hope fixing my issue with switchresx and hdmi-dp this weekend...).

The only bad point is that after that, my old hp monitor at work is killing my eyes!!!

I'm taking my existing Thunderbolt Display's into the office. I have one 1920x1200 and one 1920x1080 monitor there now (company issues), so at least it will be an upgrade.

I did use my ColorMunki to calibrate the P2715Q's at home, they look even nicer now.

Using Lightroom to look at my images taken with my Canon 5D3 and Fuji X100s is stunning.

I'm surprised Apple went all out for 5k on the iMac. I mean that's great and all, but I can't see any pixels on these UHD displays unless I get to about 5" away and look hard.

I agree. No difference for me, the feeling is the same: SHARPNESS.
I chose the 24'' because i don't need more and because I was affraid not to get this feeling with the 27 (since it has lower dpi), but with your comment I notice it is the same.
Enjoy them!

Ryan,

Did you use the cable that came with the Dell monitors? What resolution are you using?

Thanks,

Mike

Just purchased my P2415Q at dell.com with the $150 eCard offer, I figured why not. I will be using it with my rMBP w/ Iris Pro graphics. Will keep advised once it arrives next week of any issues.

Yes, I used the Display Port to mDP cable that came in the box.

I tried at the various scaled resolutions, 1080, 1440, etc.

I've settled on 2550x1440 scaled for now.

The displays are running at 60Hz.

I took some photos of the new monitors.

These were taken with the system running at full resolution, 60Hz, scaled to "look like" 2550x1440.

The images were shot with a Canon 5D3 with a 24-70 II F2.8L lens and a 100mm F2.8 L Macro lens . The macro shots show you what things look like up close, and you can compare with the shots further out to see what sort of scale we are talking about here.

There's a couple of dust specs in the macro shots, they are not dead pixels :)

These are mounted on Human Scale M8 arms.

I recently bought a 15" rMBP and i would like to buy a 4k screen and those dells seems to fit spot on.

However, i wonder if anyone in this thread is using this combination and if it's smooth or if the temperature will run incredible high?

I mainly worry about
1) my comp. not beeing powerfull enough
2) temps will run cpu 80/90 => constant fan noise

my 13" mbp runs the 4k and the temp runs about 10*c warmer vs the built in display. still too low to make the fan audible.

I just bought the P2415Q, should be here early next week and I will be using it as a primary external monitor on my rMPB with only Iris Pro graphics and will let you know on the performance.

@Ryan0751 I assume you went with the M8 rather than M2 mounts because you were using heavier monitors at some point? Or are there other feature differences?

Yes. I just replaced thunderbolt displays, which weigh a lot.

What about the Dell Computer UltraSharp UP3214Q 31.5-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor ? http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Computer...nkId=AYBMKAIDB7ILEJQR&creativeASIN=B00GVE7QEC

The screen you talk about it's from the previous serie of dell 4k screens. More professional than the series that we are talking about (p2415q and p2715q) but MST and not SST 4k 60hz screens, so with more compatibility issues to get the full resolution at this refresh (like the UP2414Q that we mentioned previously).
Very good screen but with older technology, I guess...
